Adams, McLarney Named Missouri's "Top Lawyers"
SHB Partners Rob Adams and Pat McLarney have been selected as "Top Lawyers" in 2006 by Missouri Lawyers Weekly. The publication this year recognized eight Missouri attorneys and judges for their accomplishments. Shook, Hardy & Bacon was the only firm in the state with more than one attorney selected.

While Pat was profiled for his successful term as president of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA), Rob was commended for his success in the courtroom over the past year. His 2006 trials included significant matters in such disparate industries as automotive, food/poultry distribution, and drill manufacturing.

"The most important part is being able to explain to the average person why you should win…you're trying to take a very complex issue and simplify it and show why you're right," Rob said.

In 2006, Pat oversaw the advocacy of raising the state's judges pay for the first time in six years. Much of his time was spent meeting with legislators, including three continuous weeks at the Capitol near the session's closing.

Both attorneys were also named among the Best Lawyers in America and the Kansas City Business Journal's "Best of the Bar," closing out a successful 2006.

Harris, Firm Honored for Commitment to Diversity
Tina Harris, SHB's Director of Strategic Diversity Initiatives, has been selected as a 2007 Black Achiever in Business and Industry by the Kansas City chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC and local businesses collaborate annually to recognize those individuals dedicated to leading their community and organization as advocates for equality and diversity.

The organization cited Tina's leadership role in local and national bar associations in honoring her with the award. Having spoken at various national and regional diversity conferences in 2006, Tina has once again been recognized for her originality and creativity in how to lead a diversity program within a large law firm.

This year's recipients and their organizations will be celebrated at an awards ceremony January 11 at the Downtown Marriott Hotel in Kansas City.

SRZ Hosts Elite Crowd at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium
members of SRZ's international law practice entertained nearly 200 friends, clients and important guests at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium. Attendees included representatives of foreign consulates, overseas corporations and their subsidiaries, foreign and local attorneys, U.S. corporations with overseas interests, as well as distinguished guests from the Chicago area.

“We planned our event to coincide with this year's conference of the International Bar Association,” says Richard Zwirner, head of SRZ's international legal team, “knowing it would offer us a rare chance to socialize with clients and friends from around the world. In choosing the Shedd for its scenic and historic significance, our intention was to thank clients for their loyalty and to gather an esteemed membership of the International Bar in a venue conducive to conversation.”

“To that end,” says Michael B. Roche, head of SRZ's business litigation group, “I'd say we succeeded. The crowd seemed to appreciate the opportunity to meet and mingle in such a unique setting, judging by the conviviality.”

“Surpassing our expectations for the event,” says Richard Michaels, president of SRZ, “was the caliber of conversation—impressive that night.”

No less impressive were that day's seminars, which the International Bar dedicated to a variety of compelling topics with global impact—antitrust and trade law, dispute resolution, and international property, communications and technology law. The distinctly educational aspect of these and numerous other events of the day yielded conversation that evening equally profound.

SRZ's Ronald Geimer, who has visited more than 20 countries on behalf of clients, agrees: “The IBA convention attracted attorneys from around the world who participated in many intense working sessions. Our event offered a chance to relax, but guests seemed no less intense when discussing subjects dear to them.

Weil Gotshal Secures Dismissal on Behalf of GE Money Bank
Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP achieved a major victory on behalf of GE Money Bank, obtaining dismissal on the pleadings by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri of a purported class action seeking statutory damages of $1,000 per alleged violation. Plaintiff claimed that a "prescreened" offer for a line of credit was not a "firm offer of credit" under the Fair Credit Reporting Act because it allegedly did not disclose certain terms of the offer. Weil Gotshal successfully argued that the FCRA does not require disclosure of the terms at issue, and demonstrated that the client's offer letter disclosed more than 20 key terms of the offer and had actual value to the consumer.
