Fasken Martineau helps negotiate four of Canada's Top 10 Corporate deals in 2006
Fasken Martineau was recognized for its work in helping to drive four of Canada's Top 10 Corporate Deals in 2006, as reported in the January 2007 issue of Lexpert, Canada's leading legal industry publication.

"This acknowledgement rounds out a great year for the firm on the transactional side", said Firm Managing Partner David Corbett. "It has come quickly on the heels of learning that the firm's work with several of our clients in the mining and energy sectors also earned us top billing in the National Post's list of Canada's top financing deals of 2006."

According to Lexpert, 2006 was a year of "Discord, Drama and Deal Jumping," as many Canadian corporate icons, such as Inco, the Bay and Dofasco "were swept away on a flood tide of global cash." Globalization was the key word, as "many of the major Canadian deals were of international, even global significance." Industries affected ranged from steel to media, retail and hospitality.

The Top Corporate Deals were selected by Lexpert magazine's editorial team based on feedback from the leading mergers & acquisitions and corporate lawyers in Canada. Fasken Martineau was involved in the following transactions:

1. Dofasco - Luxembourg's Arcelor purchases Canadian steel giant Dofasco in $5.6 billion deal, and is in turn bought out by Indian-owned Mittal Steel. Fasken Martineau advised Dofasco.
2. Sears - Sears Holdings fails in attempt to take Sears Canada private. Fasken Martineau advised the special committee to Sears Canada.
3. Fairmont - Saudi-based Kingdom Hotels and Colony Capital purchase Fairmont Hotels in $4.5 billion deal. Fasken Martineau advised Fairmont's special committee.
4. CHUM - Bell Globemedia buys CHUM in $1.7 billion deal. Fasken Martineau advised CHUM and its controlling shareholders.
