Joe Ramirez Recognized By Bar Associations
Holland & Hart attorney Joe Ramirez was elected as the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association's 2008 president and was also selected to attend the American Bar Association's Tort Trial & Insurance Practice (TIPS) Leadership Academy.

This year, as president-elect of the CHBA, Mr. Ramirez will serve on the Executive Committee, along with four other executives. He will meet with this committee each week to conduct CHBA business and will also work with the current president to insure that issues affecting Denver's Hispanic community are addressed. Such issues include increasing Hispanic admissions at local law schools, identifying Hispanic attorneys for consideration for judicial appointments, and reviewing proposed legislation affecting the Hispanic community.

In 2008, as president, Mr. Ramirez will act as a leader and spokesperson for the CHBA. He will attend events that impact the Hispanic community and will strive to further the CHBA's mission statement. He will also be responsible for building relationships with other bar organizations and increasing the CHBA's profile in the Colorado legal community.

Mr. Ramirez was also one of only 23 lawyers nationwide selected to attend the ABA's TIPS Leadership Academy. The ABA received more than 100 nominations for this academy, which is an intensive program designed to prepare attorneys for leadership roles in the legal profession, legal organizations, and the community at large. As a member, Mr. Ramirez will attend quarterly meetings, be appointed to leadership roles in TIPS committees, and have the opportunity to meet a wide variety of legal leaders.

Mr. Ramirez is an associate in Holland & Hart's Litigation Department. His practice focuses on business litigation with an emphasis in insurance coverage.

Hodgson Russ LLP announces six new partners
Hodgson Russ LLP is pleased to announce that the following attorneys have been elected to the firm’s partnership: Timothy P. Noonan, David G. Reed, Jeffrey C. Stravino, and Jeffrey J. Weiss of the Buffalo office and Brian K. Duffey and Jaana T. Moisio of the Boca Raton office.

Timothy P. Noonan, a member of the State & Local Tax Practice Group, focuses his practice in New York State and City tax issues and tax dispute resolution. Mr. Noonan lectures frequently on New York State and multistate tax matters and is on the faculty of the Institute of Continuing Professional Education. He is also the author of numerous articles on state and local taxes in publications such as The Trusted Professional, State Tax Notes, Journal of Multistate Taxation, and Canadian Tax Highlights.

David G. Reed, a member of the Corporate and Securities Practice Group, represents public and private companies in the areas of mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, corporate reorganizations, and general corporate law matters.

Jeffrey C. Stravino, of the Business Litigation Practice Group, concentrates his practice in the area of commercial and business litigation, including environmental litigation and intellectual property litigation. Mr. Stravino has represented both large and small companies in shareholder, software, accounting, and complex contract disputes in federal and state court at both the trial and appellate levels. Prior to joining Hodgson Russ, Mr. Stravino served as Confidential Law Clerk to the Honorable John T. Curtin, Senior United States District Judge for the Western District of New York.

Jeffrey J. Weiss, a member of the Labor & Employment and Education Law Practice Groups, concentrates his practice in special education law. With extensive litigation experience, Mr. Weiss frequently represents school districts in impartial due process hearings. He also regularly counsels school districts on their duties and responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Mr. Weiss frequently lectures to school district personnel on topics in special education law. His practice also includes representing employers in administrative and court proceedings.

Brian K. Duffey, of the Estates & Trusts Practice Group, concentrates his practice in estate planning, probate, and real estate. He has experience in the areas of probate administration, family business succession planning, buy-sell agreements, Florida Homestead and Elective Share disputes, preparation of federal and Florida estate, gift, and fiduciary tax returns and has represented fiduciaries in trust and estate mediation and litigation proceedings.

Jaana T. Moisio, a member of the Florida Family & Marital Practice Group, concentrates her practice in marital and family law, including dissolution, child custody, visitation, support, paternity, post dissolution, and pre-marital and post-marital agreements. She is a certified family law mediator and a founding member of the Association of Marital-Based Collaborative Lawyers. Born in Kemi, Finland, she is fluent in Finnish.

Corporate Attorney Julian Fortuna Joins Duane Morris in Atlanta
Duane Morris LLP is pleased to announce the arrival of Julian Fortuna, formerly the Vice President and General Tax Counsel of InterContinental Hotels Group, as a partner in its Atlanta office. Julian joins the firm's Corporate Practice Group.

Julian has extensive experience in tax research, planning and controversy matters as domestic and international tax counsel. He has structured the tax impacts of mergers, acquisitions, dispositions and reorganizations, joint ventures, construction projects, and lease exchanges and other property transactions, as well as cross-border financing, captive insurance and the worldwide use of trademark names and intangibles. In addition to working for the Internal Revenue Service, where he provided legal advice and counsel to the IRS district directors and their subordinates, Julian has represented clients before the IRS and various other tax authorities on audits, appeals, rulings requests, pre-filing determinations and other procedural matters (both for income and non-income taxes), and the negotiation and interpretation of tax indemnity contracts with third parties, including full responsibility for settlement, mediation and/or litigation.

Julian earned his LL.M. from Emory University School of Law in 1984 and his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law in 1980, where he graduated cum laude and won the American Jurisprudence Award. He was also the associate editor for Rutgers Camden Law Journal. Julian graduated from The City University of New York with a B.A. in 1977.

Clark Hill PLC Attorney J. Thomas MacFarlane Elected President of Detroit Executives Association
Clark Hill attorney J. Thomas MacFarlane has been named the President of the Detroit Executives Association (DEA) for 2007. The DEA (www.detroitexecs.com) is a group of business leaders who meet weekly to exchange business information and ideas. The association limits membership to one company per profession or industry.

MacFarlane is the 81st president of the organization and the fourth member of Clark Hill PLC to serve in this capacity. The Detroit Executives Association was founded in 1929 by George Klein, also a founding member of Clark, Klein and Beaumont, Clark Hill’s predecessor firm. In addition to MacFarlane and Klein, former Clark Hill DEA Presidents include Joseph H. Parsons (1962) and Douglas J. Rasmussen (1988).

MacFarlane is the leader of the firm’s Personal Legal Services Group, where he focuses his law practice in the area of Trusts and Estates. MacFarlane works with individuals on estate planning, tax planning and probate matters and with businesses on succession planning and corporate restructuring. MacFarlane counsels clients on the various wealth preservation strategies which are available to high net worth individuals. He is also frequently asked to represent beneficiaries or fiduciaries in complex estate contests and trust disputes.

MacFarlane is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and is a member of Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises. He has also been repeatedly named in the Best Lawyers in America and was recently named as a 2006 Michigan Super Lawyer.

Cadwalader Leads CMBS Law Firm Representations for Sixth Straight Year and Ranks Highly in Combined ABS/MBS Tables
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, one of the world’s leading international law firms, once again dominated the commercial mortgage backed securities (CMBS) market in 2006, securing the firm’s position as the premier law firm in this area for the sixth consecutive year.

According to Commercial Mortgage Alert (January 26, 2007), Cadwalader far outpaced the nearest competitor with 63 deals totaling $141.8 billion as the leading counsel for issuers, more than four times the number of transactions as the second place firm, as was also the case in 2005. The firm also posted impressive numbers as leading underwriters’ counsel with 37 deals for a total of $83.9 billion.

“The CMBS industry is very important to Cadwalader and one to which we devote significant resources,” stated capital markets partner Michael Gambro. “ We plan to continue building our longstanding relationships with other CMBS industry participants.”

Cadwalader has not only maintained but increased its share of the CMBS market during a period of intense growth. The firm foresees that CMBS deals will require even more work in the future as the complexity of transactions increase and regulatory changes take effect.
