Julian J. Nexsen, a longtime partner at Nexsen Pruet who has guided its emergence as one of the largest firms in the Carolinas, has been named the 28th recipient of the DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award from the South Carolina Bar Foundation.

The DuRant award is given in recognition of meritorious service to the law and to the community. It is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the profession, and recipients are nominated and selected by their professional peers statewide.

Nexsen received the award on Jan. 26, 2007, at the Bar’s annual convention in Charleston.

Nexsen was the first honor graduate of his class at the University of South Carolina School of Law and has been recognized repeatedly throughout his career. He earned the law school’s Compleat Lawyer Platinum Award for outstanding professional and civic achievement, and is also listed in Best Lawyers in America.

Recently, the Bar Foundation passed a resolution recognizing him for a lifetime pledge of support on behalf of its efforts to promote justice and enhance the legal profession.

Lawyer's Passion for Rodeoing Spotlighted in "Downtime" Feature
In one of its very first "Downtime" features focusing on the interesting hobbies and leisure time activities of Oklahoma businesspeople, The Journal Record turned the spotlight on McAfee & Taft shareholder Jeff Todd. Reporter Marie Price interviewed the trial lawyer on his journey from high school state champion team roper and college standout to law student and litigator.

These days, when he's not in the office or courtroom, he's likely to be found coaching his young children in the sport or taking time to participate in an occasional weekend U.S. Calf Roping Association event.

Whether he's in a rodeo arena or a courtroom, Todd says it's all about competition. "The thrill of winning a jury trial or winning a case is about as close as I've found to tying a calf in eight seconds and winning in front of a crowd.
