Adams and Reese Renews Community Commitment: Mandatory Pro Bono Hours supports partnership with Appleseed
Adams and Reese renews its commitment to the community with the implementation of mandatory pro bono hours for its nearly 300 attorneys, projecting over 5,000 hours of pro bono work in 2007.

This new policy supports the firm’s recently announced partnership with Appleseed, a network of 17 public interest law centers across the country whose mission is to develop practical and lasting solutions to chronic injustice. National Appleseed is the standard bearer for legal philanthropy in the United States.

Pro bono work for attorneys is not new; in fact, in many states (Louisiana and Tennessee, for example) the Rules of Professional Conduct encourage lawyers to perform pro bono work. Adams and Reese has taken this recommendation one step further by actually requiring ten hours per attorney for 2007, increasing to 20 hours per attorney in 2008. The firm further supports individual goals in excess of the baseline hours.

State policies vary, but typically in the South, recommendations usually have no reporting obligations. Mississippi, which actually requires pro bono work, accepts payment in lieu of hands-on work, but there is no compliance provision.

Charles (“Chuck”) P. Adams, the firm’s managing partner who lives in Jackson, Mississippi, explains, “We believe it is every attorney’s ethical obligation to perform pro bono work and, in support of our affiliation with Appleseed, we have made these hours obligatory. Community service is part of being an Adams and Reese attorney; it’s a core component of our corporate culture.”

And the firm’s respect for pro bono work is serious. According to Brian Faughnan., Pro Bono Partner for the firm, “Adams and Reese treats these clients with the attention and respect we do our other clients.”

Faughnan outlines the three layers of the firm’s pro bono work:

• First, Adams and Reese works with persons of limited means, usually defined as below the poverty level.
• Second, the firm works with individual non profit organizations whose mission is to protect civil liberties or public rights.
• Third, Adams and Reese provides legal services to organizations—including charities, education, religious and government—to promote the purpose of that organization if paying regular legal fees would threaten the organization’s financial stability.

Faughnan explains that each attorney must propose pro bono work and select an initiative as part of his or her professional goals.

“Because the program has just been launched, most attorneys are considering ways they can be most effective in assisting eligible persons or organizations with legal services. This new year is the perfect time to identify new and needy causes,” states Faughnan.

And Adams and Reese’s affiliation with Appleseed will extend these choices, especially with post Hurricane Katrina and Rita needs.

In the first partnership of its kind, Adams and Reese is providing one of its partners, Christy Kane, as the ConocoPhillips/Adams and Reese Fellow. Kane’s full-time role is to manage and direct Louisiana Appleseed, particularly in the implementation of the Katrina community report which outlines legal needs of the population most affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Although the Appleseed partnership will offer many pro bono opportunities, the firm does not restrict an attorney’s choices to Appleseed.

According to Kane, “Appleseed Centers have the expertise, the flexibility and the independence to listen to unheard voices, uncover injustices and win the battles no one else fights. Its Centers work both independently and collectively, bringing their own experiences to create local solutions that are nationally relevant.”

White & Case has added to its 30-strong London international arbitration team with the appointment of partner Kathleen Paisley. Kathleen has 20 years' experience in international arbitration, having started her career as a legal assistant to the American arbitrators at the Iran-US Claims Tribunal in 1987 in The Hague. She parlayed her experience in The Hague into an extensive track-record of advising clients on international law and international treaty issues and will add to the significant strength of the Group in handling investor-State disputes as well.

In addition to her international law capabilities, Kathleen also brings additional strengths to the practice in a number of areas. She has significant experience in working with high-tech clients on a broad range of matters, including technology licensing, antitrust and intellectual property disputes. She has also advised extensively on EU competition law and is a qualified accountant.

"Kathleen's an excellent fit with our international arbitration, technology and intellectual property practices, both here in London and across the rest of our network," commented John Bellhouse, head of White & Case's London Dispute Resolution practice. "She's a respected and well-known member of the European arbitration community and is a great addition to our team who will bring real value to our clients."

Kathleen's arrival at White & Case marks her return to international private practice. Having spent eight years at Morrison & Foerster in Brussels, where she was a partner, she moved in 2000 to become the General Counsel of Oneswoop Ltd., an online automotive business, which was purchased by Norwich Union in 2004. Since leaving Oneswoop, Kathleen has focused on building her technology and dispute resolution practice.

"Kathleen's arrival signals both the continued expansion of our investor-State practice in Europe and our commitment to the build-up of our London-based international arbitration practice," added Paul Friedland, co-head of White & Case's International Arbitration Practice Group.
