Three New Members of Silicon Valley IP Team Featured in IP Law360
The recent addition of three new attorneys to Buchanan's Silicon Valley office — Karineh Khachatourian, Jeffrey M. Ratinoff and Bryan J. Sinclair — was noted in a January 19, 2007, article in IP Law360 as giving the firm’s "team a competitive edge in Silicon Valley." Both Khachatourian and Sinclair serve as special counsel, while Ratinoff is a senior attorney.

The article, titled "Buchanan Ingersoll Bolsters Silicon Valley IP Team," highlighted the experience each attorney brings to Buchanan’s Intellectual Property Section, especially in the areas of dispute resolution and IP litigation in federal, state and appellate courts.

Khachatourian told IP Law360 that, along with staying close to her existing client base in Silicon Valley, "I’m excited about the challenge to build the firm’s IP litigation department and capability in Silicon Valley. The firm is not only committed to expanding its Silicon Valley presence, but also its California presence." In addition, she noted, "there’s a lot of crossover between the firm’s institutional clients and large Silicon Valley-based companies."

She added that women attorneys do not ordinarily get the chance to help launch the growth initiative of a practice. "This is a great opportunity for me. I appreciate the chance to grow the practice as well as the firm’s commitment to me. The expansion means we can take on more varied cases and interesting issues."

According to the article, many of Khachatourian’s clients will follow her to Buchanan, including Eagle Broadband, a communications technology and services provider; Savvis Inc., a global IT utility services provider; and Phoenix Technologies, a builder of core system software platforms.

Buchanan’s Merger Figures Prominently in Pittsburgh Business Times Article
Titled "Mergers change local legal landscape," an article appearing in the January 19, 2007, edition of the Pittsburgh Business Times discussed recent mergers among the city’s three largest law firms. The merger that created Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney in July 2006 was termed "the biggest local merger in decades."

The article noted that all three firms — Buchanan, Reed Smith, and K&L Gates — wanted to "fill in their U.S. footprints" and that CEO Tom VanKirk is game for a similarly big merger in New York City or Philadelphia. VanKirk is quoted as saying, "We want a larger presence in those places so, therefore, we could have merger activities in both."

The article went on to quote VanKirk on his belief that it's a plus for Pittsburgh to be home to Buchanan, K&L Gates and Reed Smith. "The fact that the city of Pittsburgh can support and headquarter three different law firms in the top 80 — depending on whether you're using National Law Journal or American Lawyer measurements — says a lot about the Pittsburgh marketplace. It makes for a very vibrant legal market, which makes it easier for smaller firms to recruit here."

Speaking to redundancy that often results from mergers, Robert Denney, president of Robert Denney Associates, a Wayne, Pennsylvania-based consultancy to law firms, told the Business Times that he expects Buchanan to "most likely to influence the Pittsburgh market going forward.
