Hunton & Williams Names Frank Emory as New Head of Litigation Department
Hunton & Williams LLP today announced it has named Frank E. Emory Jr. as the head of its 300-lawyer Litigation Department, one of the largest in the nation. In his new role, Emory will be responsible for both the litigation and intellectual property practices. Emory, the first African American to become a department head at the firm, focuses his practice on cases involving intellectual property, complex contract disputes, business torts, and covenants against competition. He has tried more than 50 cases in state and federal courts and before arbitration panels and administrative agencies, including serving as lead counsel in New York federal court for Bank of America in a successful jury trial defense last year of a patent infringement claim filed by TradeCard which had sought a multimillion dollar damage award against the bank.

He is a member of the firm’s Executive and Diversity Activities Committees and has served as co-chair of the firm’s Diversity Strategies Committee. Emory also helped build a partnership for the firm with Sodexho and Duke Energy that resulted in a joint summer clerk program for minority law students.

“Frank has been a leader at our firm on the practice level and for our diversity initiatives, and we are pleased to have him take on the responsibility of leading our Litigation Department,” said Wally Martinez, the firm’s managing partner. “He is not only an excellent trial lawyer but he is a strong leader committed to continuing to grow our national litigation practice.”

Emory received his undergraduate degree from Duke University, cum laude, and his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. He will work from the firm’s Washington and Charlotte offices. “I am honored to lead this group of incredibly talented lawyers,” said Emory. “I look forward to continuing to grow the group and reinforcing its reputation as a go-to national trial practice for companies in the United States and abroad that face significant litigation challenges.”

The Hunton & Williams’ Litigation Department has tripled in size in the past 15 years, and recently expanded to the West Coast with the addition of lawyers from Los Angeles-based trial boutique O’Donnell & Mortimer. It boasts a large number of senior trial lawyers who have handled an average of 75 trials each in their careers, and several of which are Fellows in the American College of Trial Lawyers.

The practice has represented clients across the United States and around the globe in a full range of matters, including bankruptcy, competition, complex commercial litigation, bet-the-company cases, intellectual property, product liability and toxic tort, and securities and white collar criminal defense. The team focuses on cases involving substantial enterprise risk and has handled more than 250 trials and 23,000 matters in the last five years.

Hunton & Williams’ clients include many of the Fortune 50, and the team serves as lead litigation counsel for Alcoa and is a preferred litigation provider for Pfizer. Members of the Litigation Department have handled numerous high-profile cases in the past year. They represented Duke Energy in the recent Supreme Court case U.S. v. Duke Energy Corporation regarding New Source Review, and represented MercExchange in the closely watched eBay patent infringement litigation, which also climbed to the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year. Hunton & Williams attorneys were also co-counsel for NTP against Research in Motion resulting in NTP’s $612.5 million final settlement and also counseled the nation’s largest wireless carrier in a $41 billion merger.
