Law Firm Hires Federal Clerk as Young Litigator
She’s clerked for a federal judge in one of the busiest trial courts in the country. Now Nicole Westbrook will use her experience at the law firm of Shughart Thomson & Kilroy in Denver, Colorado. Nicole joined the firm in December as part of the Business Litigation Group after clerking for U.S. District Judge Alia Moses Ludlum from the Western District of Texas in the Del Rio Division.

“It was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone. It’s one of the busiest trial courts in the United States. You really see how the system works inside and out. It was phenomenal,” said Westbrook.

United States District Judge Alia Moses Ludlum reaped praise on Westbrook. “I have been blessed to have very competent and professional law clerks, but Nicole is at the top of the list as one of the best. Nicole was always professional, and prompt with her work. She is an exceptionally intelligent attorney, which is very evident in all of her work, especially in her written work product. I am very proud of her and know she will continue to excel.”

Denver Managing Partner Steve Long is thrilled to have Nicole as part of the Shughart Thomson & Kilroy team. “We know Nicole had a number of options. Her choosing Shughart Thomson & Kilroy is good for our firm and we believe will be good for her career.”

Nicole is a Wyoming native who graduated with a B.S. in psychology from the University of Wyoming in 1999. She attended law school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and earned her J.D. in 2002. Nicole passed the Colorado Bar in July of 2002.

Nicole says her goals include getting some practical courtroom experience. “I’ve seen lots of it and can’t wait to try my first case.” In her spare time, Westbrook enjoys running and says she’s had to adjust her pace to the Denver climate.

Firm Represented Guardian ad Litem
The firm recently represented a Guardian ad Litem of a young baby to terminate parental rights. The baby was born to incarcerated parents with extensive histories of drug use and crime. Our attorneys fought hard to uncover the underlying evidence for the case in the face of strong opposition from the parents' attorneys and while safeguarding substantial privacy concerns. Prior to trial, our attorneys negotiated a voluntary termination for one of the parents and on the first day of trial, after hearing some of the evidence our attorneys uncovered, the other parent conceded to voluntary termination as well. The baby will now be free to be adopted.
