BINGHAM MCCUTCHEN AND SAKAI & MIMURA OFFICIALLY COMBINE, ADDING 22 LAWYERS TO BINGHAM’S TOKYO OFFICE
Bingham McCutchen LLP, a global law firm with nearly more than 950 lawyers in 13 offices worldwide, officially entered into a joint enterprise yesterday with Sakai & Mimura, a 22-lawyer Tokyo firm known internationally for its financial restructuring strength, and merger and acquisition capabilities.

The combination with Sakai & Mimura, founded in 1995 by Hideyuki Sakai, bolsters Bingham’s renowned cross-border restructuring and insolvency practice, further expanding its on-the-ground capacity in Asia.

“This is exciting news, especially in conjunction with the recent opening of our Hong Kong office,” said Bingham Chairman Jay Zimmerman. “Both moves will expand our presence in Asia and provide us with an increased ability to meet client needs on a global scale.”

Bingham, through its new joint enterprise with Sakai, will have approximately 20 bengoshi (Japanese lawyers) and a total of 25 US and Japanese lawyers. Sakai will be managing partner of Bingham’s Tokyo office.

Bingham’s Japanese Practice Group, known in Tokyo as Bingham McCutchen Murase, handles complex cross-border transactions and legal matters involving Japan. With more than 40 years of experience, the group, led by Jiro Murase and Satoru Murase of Bingham’s New York office, provides strategic legal, business and governmental advice to major U.S. and European companies in Japan and Asia, as well as nearly 500 Japanese-affiliated companies.

Troutman Sanders’ Attorneys In Top Five Percent
Troutman Sanders LLP is pleased to announce that three of its lawyers have been selected for inclusion in the 2007 edition of Law & Politics’ North Carolina Super Lawyers.

Ranking in the top five percent of active, licensed attorneys in the state, Troutman Sanders’ 2007 North Carolina Super Lawyers are:

Name Primary Practice Areas

Patricia P. Kerner Civil Litigation Defense

Gary S. Parsons Business Litigation

Ashley H. Story Real Estate

For inclusion and distinction as a “Super Lawyer,” attorneys are selected by their peers based on an extensive balloting, research and blue-ribbon review process. This year, Law & Politics sent out approximately 14,000 ballots to active North Carolina lawyers and asked them to nominate attorneys whom they have personally observed in litigation, transactional or other legal matters. The voting attorneys were asked not to choose a candidate based on reputation alone, but on certain criteria, such as peer recognition, professional achievement, civic service and pro bono activities. Law & Politics’ officials took many precautions to ensure a fair selection process, including researching credentials and keeping track of who voted for whom.

Patricia P. Kerner was not only honored by her peers as a Super Lawyer, but was ranked one of the top 50 female lawyers in the state (a distinction she also garnered in 2006). Kerner’s current practice focuses on complex litigation.
