Two Attorneys Promoted to Partner at Hiscock & Barclay
Susan R. Katzoff, of Hiscock & Barclay’s Syracuse Office, and Brian D. Casey, of the Firm’s Albany Office, have been elected to the Partnership. Susan Katzoff focuses her practice on creditors’ rights. She has successfully litigated hundreds of adversary proceedings involving fraudulent conveyance and preference claims as well as successfully addressing various bankruptcy-related issues, including assumption and rejection of executory contracts and objections to proofs of claim and claims for administrative expenses. Katzoff represents large utility companies as well as commercial lending institution creditors in Chapters 7, 11 and 13 bankruptcies relating to secured and unsecured claims, secured transactions, negotiable instruments and adversary proceedings. In addition, Katzoff has extensive experience representing large corporate debtors in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Katzoff is a graduate of St. John’s University School of Law (J.D., 1991) and the State University of New York at Albany (B.A., 1988). Prior to joining the firm in 2002, she practiced before the New York state Appellate Division for the Second and Third Departments prosecuting attorney misconduct and was an Associate with Saperston & Day, PC.

Brian Casey focuses his practice on insurance defense and commercial litigation. He has experience handling a wide variety of matters including construction site accidents, coverage disputes, motor vehicle accidents, premises liability, and complex toxic tort litigation, including the defense of lead paint and chlorine gas exposure claims. Casey is a graduate of Albany Law School of Union University (J.D., 1993, cum laude) and Siena College (B.S., 1990, magna cum laude). Casey joined Hiscock & Barclay as an Associate in 2004, following the Firm’s acquisition of Bouck, Holloway Kiernan & Casey, LLP where he was a Senior Associate. Prior to private practice, Casey served as Schenectady County Assistant District Attorney.

HASKELL SLAUGHTER'S FULLMER APPOINTED TO BIRMINGHAM BAR TASK FORCE
Margaret Mary Fullmer, an attorney with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, LLC, has been appointed to the Birmingham Bar Association's (BBA) Task Force on Communications and Public Relations. The Task Force is charged with helping to define the public image of the BBA and to publicize positive contributions by BBA members in the community. In addition, the Task Force will assist in developing strategies for BBA membership retention and recruitment.

With over 3,000 members, the BBA is the largest local bar association in Alabama.

Missy Fullmer maintains a general civil litigation practice, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of matters. Her practice particularly focuses on the representation of clients in complex securities fraud and insurance litigation. Before joining Haskell Slaughter, she served as a law clerk to Judge J. Gregory Shaw on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, as a Deputy Attorney General in the Capital Litigation Division in the Alabama Attorney General's Office, and as an associate in a defense litigation firm in Birmingham. Ms. Fullmer attended the U.S. Military Academy and is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and Cumberland School of Law of Samford University.

Mark B. Childress Joins Foley Hoag as Partner in Life Sciences, Energy Technology & Renewables
Foley Hoag LLP today announced the addition of Mark B. Childress as a partner working in the Boston and Washington, D.C. offices. Mark will practice in the Life Sciences and Energy Technology & Renewables areas and is also part of the firm's Government Strategies Group.

Mark has significant experience at senior level positions in the executive and legislative branches, and has worked extensively with federal agencies. From 2000 to 2005, he served as Chief Counsel and Policy Director for Senator Tom Daschle in his capacity as Democratic Leader. Previously he was Senior Counsel to President Clinton, responsible for helping identify and secure approval for all positions requiring U.S. Senate confirmation, including federal judges and members of the Cabinet. Mark was also General Counsel to the Senate Labor Committee under Chairman Edward M. Kennedy, where he focused on issues relating to Food and Drug Administration, particularly in the field of life sciences, and was one of the principal staff authors of the Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 and the Prescription Drug User Fee Act. Mark also served as General Counsel and Vice President for Policy at the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit research organization, analyzing a broad range of public health and environmental issues.

"Mark has worked at the highest levels of the Executive Branch and Congress," said Nick Littlefield, Co-Chair of Foley Hoag's Government Strategies Group. "His experience will prove invaluable especially in the life sciences and energy/environmental policy area, given the significant issues before Congress over the next years affecting these industries."

Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Mark served as the Principal Legal Officer for the Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation of Cairns, Australia. In that role, he negotiated commercial contracts with multinational corporations on behalf of Aboriginal landowners and served as principal legal and commercial advisor to an Aboriginal development corporation.

Mark received a B.A. in History, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Yale University, and a J.D. from the University of North Carolina Law School.

2007 Farella Braun + Martel Diversity Scholarships
Farella Braun + Martel recognizes the value of increasing diversity within the legal profession, and as part of our commitment to diversity, we award Diversity Scholarships to support outstanding Bay Area diverse law students. As we have for the past six years, Farella Braun + Martel will award a total of $25,000 in scholarship grants for the 2007 - 2008 school year, to be divided equally between three to five law student recipients.

Scholarship applicants must be current first-year, full- or part-time (attending first-year classes) law students who are students of color, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community, disabled, or whose background or experience would otherwise contribute to the diversity of the legal profession. Recipients must currently attend one of the following local law schools: University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall); University of California, Davis (King Hall); University of California, Hastings College of the Law; Golden Gate University; Stanford University; Santa Clara University; or the University of San Francisco.

Our scholarship committee is composed of attorneys at the firm, and scholarship recipients will be selected based upon a combination of merit and financial need. With respect to merit, the committee will consider each applicant's academic and extracurricular accomplishments, background, activities, obligations and commitment to community service. need, as interpreted by the committee, will be determined based upon the applicant's and the applicant's family's income; the applicant's sources of financial aid, including loans, grants, fellowships and scholarships, if any; assets, if any; expenses; and expected income during the summer of 2007. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a commitment to working and living in the Bay Area.

Farella Braun + Martel announces today the addition of attorney Susan C. Cagann as Special Counsel in the Business Transactions Group. Cagann joins with nearly 20 years of experience in compliance, regulation and distribution of consumer products, much of which was gained working in-house with leading national brands, including Kendall-Jackson and Safeway Inc.

Cagann's practice focuses on assisting a wide range of food and wine producers, retailers, suppliers and distributors in complying with industry regulations and laws. Cagann joins the firm from Nixon Peabody's San Francisco office. Prior to private practice, Cagann served in both executive and legal capacities for Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates and Jackson Family Farms, a management services company for Jackson's luxury wine portfolio. Her many roles included counsel on and management of the full range of legal matters facing this wine industry powerhouse, including environmental regulations compliance, including water rights and quality issues; federal and state regulations on the production, marketing and distribution of wine; and Proposition 65 compliance. Cagann was also a senior attorney at Safeway Inc., where she managed legal compliance in sales and marketing; advertising; consumer protection and privacy; e-commerce; weights and measures; unfair trade practices; transportation; and environmental regulations.

A frequent author and speaker, Cagann has lectured on a variety of legal topics in national venues, such as the National Conference of State Liquor Administrators, Food Marketing Institute Legal Conference and Miami International Wine Fair. Cagann earned her J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law (1988) and her B.A. from the University of Illinois (1982).
