Bridgestone Sues To Protect Off-Road Tires
Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire LLC is hoping to put the brakes on GPX International Tire Corporation’s sale of off-road tires, filing a suit against the work tire company on January 31 for alleged trademark infringement, unfair competition, and false advertising. Bridgestone, which is seeking a jury trial, said that GPX “engaged in a systematic pattern of unlawful conduct by knocking-off a series of Firestone trademarks” and disseminating false and misleading advertising about its products. Bridgestone/Firestone and BFS Brands are represented by Finnegan Henderson.

Cozen O’Connor Attorney Francine L. Semaya Presents at American Conference Institute Forum
Cozen O’Connor member Francine L. Semaya recently served as a lecturer for the American Conference Institute’s 3rd Annual Legal and Compliance Executives’ Forum on Insurance Regulation in New York, N.Y., speaking on the topic of “Insolvent Insurers: Complying with Government Mandates to Pick up the Slack.” The two-day forum consisted of chief compliance officers, insurance and reinsurance attorneys, insurance regulators and brokers, legal and regulatory compliance professionals, and general counsel discussing compliance processes that will help business avoid exposure. The faculty lectured on all aspects of effective compliance, including absorbing the latest regulatory developments into existing compliance programs, restructuring compliance models with regard to recent settlements, ensuring that compliance procedures take into account laws from other jurisdictions, filing SARs and analyzing and monitoring the effectiveness of compliance programs.

Semaya is the chair of Cozen O’Connor’s insurance corporate and regulatory practice group. Resident in the firm's New York Downtown office, she concentrates her practice in reinsurance, insolvency and national and global insurance regulatory matters, in the areas of property, casualty, life, annuity, surety and financial guaranty.

Active in several professional organizations, Semaya is a member of the American Bar Association and its Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS), where she served six years as the section's delegate to the House of Delegates; chairs TIPS Task Force on Federal Involvement in Insurance Regulation Modernization and chaired the Task Force on Implementation of TIPS Insurance Insolvency Report; past chair of the Task Force on Insurance Insolvency; Public Regulation of Insurance Law Committee; New York State Bar Association; Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Insurance Law Committee; Practicing Law Institute - Insurance Law Advisory Board; International Association of Insurance Receivers – 2nd Vice President and Board of Directors; Federation of Regulatory Counsel, Inc.; and AIDA member. Semaya is a frequent lecturer and has authored numerous articles in both legal and insurance trade publications on insurance regulatory, reinsurance and insolvency law.

Semaya earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brooklyn College (B.A., magna cum laude, 1973; M.S., magna cum laude, 1975) and her law degree from New York Law School (J.D., cum laude, 1982). She is admitted to practice in New York and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, U.S. Supreme Court and New York Supreme Court: Appellate Division, Second Department.

Cozen O'Connor Attorney Francine L. Semaya Serves as Program Chair at TIPS Midwinter Symposium
Cozen O'Connor member Francine L. Semaya recently served as a program chair, speaker and moderator at the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section’s (TIPS) 33rd Annual Midwinter Symposium of Insurance, Employment and Benefits, held in Laguna Beach, Calif. Semaya moderated both the “Roundtable of Insurance Commissioners – Current Issues in Insurance Regulation” and the breakout session titled “Update on Federal Regulatory Issues Impacting Insurance Issues.” She discussed the pending and future insurance regulatory initiatives from Washington, including the need to renew TRIA. She also served as chair of the morning session.

The four-day symposium focused on emerging issues and litigation relating to insurance regulation, employment law, ERISA and employee benefits and life, health and disability insurance. Topics discussed included class action litigation trends, litigation trends in life insurance and annuities, ERISA interpretation around the circuits, resolving pension plan issues, and the status of attacks on discretionary clauses.

Covington Advises Pfizer in Acquisition of BioRexis
Covington & Burling LLP advised Pfizer in the acquisition of BioRexis, a privately held biopharmaceutical company. The transaction is expected to close in the first or second quarter of 2007. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

BioRexis is developing long-acting GLP-1 receptor agonists for the potential treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes. Early studies with these compounds support their potential to advance new treatment options for the disease.

The Covington corporate team included partner Scott Smith and associates Andrew Muratore, Michelle Garcia, and Michael Tzartzouras. The New York and Washington based team included Corinne Goldstein (environmental), Scott Cunningham (FDA), Michael Francese and Kendra Roberson (benefits), Robert Heller (tax), and Natalie Derzko (intellectual property).

Carlton Fields Attorney, Mark P. Rankin, Appointed to The Florida Bar Grievance Committee
Carlton Fields Tampa attorney, Mark P. Rankin, was recently appointed to The Florida Bar Thirteenth Circuit Grievance Committee. His terms will run through December 2009. The local grievance committees of The Florida Bar are composed of lawyers and non-lawyers, and are responsible for continuing the investigation of possible lawyer misconduct referred by Bar discipline attorneys.

Rankin practices in the firm’s White Collar Crime and Government Investigations Practice Group. Prior to joining Carlton Fields, he was an Assistant Federal Public Defender with the Federal Public Defender’s Office, where he served as a trial and appellate counsel to criminal defendants charged with a wide range of cases including fraud offenses, drug offenses, immigration matters, and firearms offenses. Rankin received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1999 and his B.S. in Criminal Justice, magna cum laude, from Old Dominion University in 1996.

Carlton Fields Attorney Lori Baggett spoke at the Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance seminar, “Avoid Retaliation Claims and Save Your Company’s Reputation and Costs.” The presentation was held on January 24, 2007 at the Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance Conference Center in Tampa, Florida.

Tampa Bay WorkForce helps fill the talent pipeline with work-ready, experienced professionals as well as entry-level job candidates to meet the human capital needs of businesses in the Tampa Bay region. Baggett’s presentation was designed to provide tips on the practices all businesses should have in place to help their company avoid claims for retaliation in cases of harassment and discrimination.

Baggett is a member of the Firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. She also practices in the areas of Appellate Practice & Trial Support, Business Litigation & Trade Regulation, and White Collar and Governmental Investigations. Prior to joining Carlton Fields, Baggett served as a Judicial Law Clerk for The Honorable Charles R. Wilson, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and a Judicial Intern for The Honorable Mary S. Scriven, U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. She received her B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of South Alabama in 1998 and her J.D., cum laude, from Stetson University College of Law in 2002, where she was the Recent Developments Editor of the Stetson Law Review and a member and Associate Justice of the Moot Court Board.

Litigator Darryl A. Parson Joins Drinker Biddle & Reath Office in Wilmington
Darryl A. Parson has joined Drinker Biddle & Reath’s Wilmington, Del., office as counsel in the firm’s commercial litigation practice. Parson, who comes to Drinker Biddle from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, focuses his practice on complex and general securities, partnership, contract, and general commercial litigation, including shareholder derivative suits and class actions.
“Darryl is a top-flight advocate who will enhance the depth and sophistication of our litigation practice in Delaware,” said Andrew C. Kassner, partner-in-charge of Drinker Biddle’s Wilmington office and executive partner of the firm. “We are delighted to have Darryl join our Wilmington office. His active participation in the local business community and the Delaware Bar makes him a valuable and significant addition to our firm.”
Drinker Biddle opened its Wilmington office in 2003. Parson, who joins six other lawyers in the office, is part of a growing team that services clients not only in the area of commercial litigation, but also bankruptcy, corporate restructurings and workouts, and a variety of complex business transactions.

coach of the 1998 Legal Outreach, Inc. Mock Trial Competition tournament champions. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.
Parson is very active in Wilmington’s business, professional and community affairs. He is a member of the Delaware State Bar Association (“DSBA”), a member and the vice chairperson of the DSBA Multicultural Judges & Lawyers Section, and the 2006 recipient of the DSBA New Lawyers Distinguished Service Award. He is a director of Delaware State Bar Insurance Services, Inc., a former associate member of the Delaware State Board of Bar Examiners, the former secretary and current treasurer of the Richard S. Rodney Inn of Court, and a member of the New York State Bar Association.
In addition, Parson is a director of the American Civil Liberties Union/Foundation of Delaware, a member of the Columbia Law School Association, the Board of Managers of the Downtown YMCAs, the Harvard University Alumni Association and the Harvard Club of Delaware. Parson is past president of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Wilmington Alumni Chapter, a member of Kappa Mainstream Leadership, Inc., a trustee of The McLaughlin Fund, and a member of The Monday Club, Inc., the Salesianum School Board of Trustees, and the Black Alumni Society of Salesianum.
