Sonnenschein Expands Patent Litigation Group with Two New Attorneys in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.
Law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced the continued growth of its Patent Litigation Group with the addition of Yar R. Chaikovsky as partner and former U.S. International Trade Commission Section 337 Administrative Law Judge Delbert R. “Chip” Terrill, Jr., as of counsel. Chaikovsky will reside in Sonnenschein’s San Francisco office until mid-March when the firm opens its new Silicon Valley office in Menlo Park, Calif. Terrill will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

“The addition of Yar and Judge Terrill represents a significant expansion of our patent litigation practice and positions us as one of the premier patent litigation groups in the country,” said Alexander J. Hadjis, chair of Sonnenschein’s national Patent Litigation Group. “Yar is an outstanding attorney and litigator, and he brings with him a unique expertise in the patent litigation field. At the same time, Judge Terrill’s unique experience, both as an attorney and as a judge who has presided over numerous, high-stakes patent cases, makes him a great asset to our group. As the only former ITC judge currently practicing law, Terrill is simply one of a kind.”

Chaikovsky, who joins Sonnenschein from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, is a highly regarded patent litigation attorney. He is also an adjunct lecturer at Stanford Law School, where he teaches a course on intellectual property, and a frequent speaker on various aspects of intellectual property law. His practice focuses on patent litigation, pre-litigation analyses, and patent strategy and counseling for companies in all stages of development, from start-ups to established companies, in a wide range of technology fields.

Terrill is a former administrative law judge at both the International Trade Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. In those roles, he presided over complex intellectual property (Section 337) and energy disputes, resolving sophisticated technical and economic issues. During his tenure at the ITC, Terrill handled the largest patent and trademark cases in the Commission’s history. He currently serves as chairman of the Committee on the International Trade Commission, Intellectual Property Law Section, American Bar Association and on the executive committee of the ITC Trial Lawyers Association.

Terrill’s legal career covers both the public and private sectors. He has worked for the U.S. Department of Defense, first as a trial attorney and later as an administrative judge in the Directorate for Industrial Security Clearance Review. Prior to that, he was a special assistant U.S. Attorney. He also worked in the Office of the Special Counsel in Washington. Terrill began his legal career working in the White House on the Presidential Clemency Board under President Gerald Ford and then on Capitol Hill. Most recently, he was counsel at White & Case LLP.

Chaikovsky earned a J.D. degree from the UCLA School of Law and a B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Southern California. Terrill received a J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He holds two B.S. degrees, one from the University of Maryland and the other from the United States Air Force Academy.

“I am eager to lead the way in Silicon Valley for Sonnenschein’s patent litigation practice,” said Chaikovsky. “With a strong understanding of what’s required to succeed in the region, and with several of my clients currently based there, this is a unique opportunity for us. I am very excited to be working again with Alex Hadjis.”

Added Terrill, “Sonnenschein is already well known in the patent litigation field for its technical expertise and extensive trial experience. Its Patent Litigation Group has some of the better Section 337 ITC litigation and trial talent in the country. I look forward to adding my 30 years of practicing law to one of the nation’s top patent litigation practices as it continues to expand.”

CLEVELAND LAW FIRM MCDONALD HOPKINS ACQUIRES CHICAGO FIRM
The Cleveland law firm McDonald Hopkins LLC has acquired the Chicago law firm of Harris Kessler & Goldstein LLC, representing McDonald Hopkins’ strategic plan to accommodate continued client growth in the Midwest.

For the 80-year-old McDonald Hopkins, the acquisition satisfies the firm's plan to gain entry into the financial center of the Midwest, Chicago, so as to build a stronger presence with, and offer more services to, middle market companies in the region, said firm president, Joseph J. LoPresti.

“As a significant regional firm, Chicago is an important step in our long-term business strategy and the attorneys from Harris Kessler & Goldstein share our goals,” he said. “The transaction represents strategic advancements for both firms. It supports the Chicago team with the backing of a full-service firm, while providing McDonald Hopkins with a Chicago base from which to expand our services.”

With offices now in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; West Palm Beach, Fla.; Detroit and Chicago, McDonald Hopkins is comprised of more than 120 attorneys, with concentrations in all aspects of business law, litigation, business restructuring, and estate planning. Last year, in concurrent efforts to accommodate client and attorney growth, McDonald Hopkins completed an {1085022:}expansion project of its headquarters in Cleveland’s Fifth-Third Bank building, and relocated offices to larger facilities in Detroit and West Palm Beach.

Steve Harris, Rick Kessler and Ryann Whalen will continue to oversee Chicago office matters and operate with the same personalized services as they have since 1995, focusing on corporate law, healthcare, real estate, secured lending, estate planning, and commercial litigation.

Former Federal Prosecutor Joins Hughes Hubbard’s Securities and White Collar Practices
Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP announced today that Marc Weinstein, former Co-Chief of the Major Crimes Unit in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District, has joined its New York office as a partner. Mr. Weinstein will assume a leading role in the Firm’s Securities and White-Collar Litigation practices.

As Co-Chief of the Major Crimes Unit, Mr. Weinstein supervised the prosecution of complex financial crimes, including corporate, computer, healthcare, insurance and investment fraud. During his service in the Commodities and Securities Fraud Task Force and the Major Crimes Unit, he tried ten fraud cases, and oversaw or was involved in many more. Recently he led the largest undercover investigation of foreign currency markets, which resulted in three trials and 45 convictions. He joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 1998. He was an associate at Hughes Hubbard from 1993 to 1996.

George Davidson, Chair of the Firm’s Litigation Group, said Mr. Weinstein is a valuable addition to the growing practice, especially given the current trend of criminalizing conduct previously dealt with in the regulatory and civil arenas. “He brings additional resources, particularly on the criminal side, which was once a dimension pretty well absent from these sorts of cases but is now often present,” Davidson said.
He will play a leading role in Hughes Hubbard’s commercial and securities litigation, especially in the firm’s 35-lawyer Professional Liability practice and Securities and White Collar practices, according to Bill Maguire, Chair of the Professional Liability practice.

Mr. Weinstein received a B.A. from Duke University (1990) and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvannia Law School (1993).

Greenberg Traurig Hosts "Cradle of Christianity" Tour and Reception at Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale
The Ft. Lauderdale office of Greenberg Traurig LLP hosted a special reception and tour, Wednesday, January 31, at the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale, in conjunction with the highly-acclaimed exhibition “Cradle of Christianity: Jewish and Christian Treasures from the Holy Land.” Approximately 200 of the firm’s attorneys, clients and other invited guests noshed on exotic hors d’ouevres paired with fines wine, and were then led on a private tour.

Law firm shareholder Bruce March, who chaired the event, introduced the Museum’s Executive Director Irv Lippman for brief remarks before the tour.

“Certainly we came together this evening for a very special exhibit, but it is only one of the many ways that the Museum of Art - Fort Lauderdale is a true treasure here in South Florida,” said March. “Under Mr. Lippman’s leadership, the Museum has brought the treasures of antiquity to our own backyard,” he said.

Greenberg Traurig is a corporate sponsor of “Cradle of Christianity” which provides South Florida residents and visitors an unprecedented opportunity to learn about aspects of early Jewish life, the concurrent birth of Christianity, and how the two faiths influenced each other by presenting archaeological treasures excavated in Israel during the last century. The exhibition, which runs through April 15, was curated and organized by the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Ft. Lauderdale is one of only three U.S. stops for Cradle of Christianity.
