Compliance Weekly Quotes Bracewell Partner
Bracewell & Giuliani Partner Michael W. Tankersley was quoted in Compliance Weekly's article "Will Better Definitions Lead to Better AS2?" Under the reforms proposed last month by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, the vague definitions currently in Auditing Standard No. 2 would be replaced by new ones, giving auditors more room to exercise professional judgment about whether a control deficiency exists. That would mean continued demand for ample documentation to support audit conclusions, which Tankersley cautions will drive up audit costs. And he says it’s not clear whether auditors will find the leeway in the new language that they are seeking.

Geraldine Ferraro Joins Blank Rome Government Relations
Blank Rome announced today that Geraldine A. Ferraro has joined Blank Rome Government Relations LLC as a principal. Ms. Ferraro brings decades of high-level legal, political, public affairs, and government relations experience and relationships to the Firm, and will provide counsel to clients on a broad range of public policy issues. Ms. Ferraro will be based in Blank Rome’s New York office and will also spend time regularly in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

“We are thrilled to welcome Gerry to Blank Rome,” said Carl M. Buchholz, managing partner and chief executive officer. “We are committed to providing clients with a bipartisan team tailored to serve their unique needs. Gerry’s distinguished career in politics and public affairs, as well as her international experience, will be a tremendous asset to our clients and to the strategic growth of our government relations company.”

Prior to joining Blank Rome, Ms. Ferraro served as a managing director of Global Consulting Group, an international investor relations, corporate communications, and public affairs consultancy, providing advisory services to publicly listed and private companies, non-profit organizations, state governments, and political leaders around the world.

“This is an exciting time to join Blank Rome Government Relations,” said Geraldine A. Ferraro, Principal. “I look forward to applying my experience and expertise to helping the firm continue to grow and succeed nationally, as well as internationally.”

Ms. Ferraro served six years in Congress from New York City's 9th District, during which she served as a women's and human rights advocate, working for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, sponsoring the Women's Economic Equity Act ending pension discrimination against women, and seeking greater job training and opportunities for displaced homemakers. Ms. Ferraro also served on the Public Works Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Post Office Committee. Ms. Ferraro served a term as the secretary of the House Democratic Caucus, and was chairwoman of the Platform Committee for the 1984 Democratic National Convention. She received the nomination of the Democratic Party to run for Vice President of the United States in 1984. Ms. Ferraro is the first, and only woman to date, to be so nominated.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Ms. Ferraro ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. From 1996–1998, Ms. Ferraro was co-host on Crossfire, a political commentary show on CNN, and continues to provide political commentary as a contributor to Fox News. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Goodrich Petroleum Company, Inc. and will continue to serve as an advisor to the Global Consulting Group.

Prior to her career in politics, Ms. Ferraro worked in the Queens, New York, District Attorney's office, where she established the Special Victims Bureau.

Geraldine Ferraro’s Move to Blank Rome Praised by the Press
The only woman to ever win a major-party nomination as Vice President of the United States has joined Blank Rome Government Relations LLC, attracting the media’s attention.

Peter Lattman wrote in the Wall Street Journal Online’s law blog: Ms. Ferraro “strikes us as a ‘double-threat’ hire by Blank Rome, given that there’s now a Democratic governor in Albany and a Democratic Congress in Washington.” The New York Times reported that she “will work out of New York City for the firm, a subsidiary of the Blank Rome law firm.”

On a slightly territorial note, however, the Washington Post.com reported, “Geraldine Ferraro is heading back to D.C.—or at least she’ll be spending more time here . . . . The 1984 vice presidential candidate . . . adds a bit of Democratic flava to a firm known for its GOP ties; she also returns to town just in time for the latest round of “Is the nation ready to elect a woman?” interviews.”

The Philadelphia Business Journal, geographically in-between the U.S.’s political and financial capitals, reconciled these competing claims by explaining that Ms. Ferraro will split time between New York and Washington.

"It's a superb law firm and has a superb reputation," said Ms. Ferraro in the Houston Chronicle. "She joked that the firm was 'so Republican' and said she looks foward to mixing it up with partners who belong to the opposing party." In actuality, Blank Rome is increasingly bipartisan. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported managing partner Carl Buchholz's comments that "Blank Rome was committed to providing bipartisan teams to its clients." The Legal Intelligencer also reported that "the government relations group's 28 members are fairly evenly split between Democrats and Republicans."

Ms. Ferraro told WSJ.com: “This is a great challenge and it’s exciting to help create something. The reason I ran for office is that I wanted to make an impact on people’s lives. So if I can get a member of the Senate or state assembly to turn around and help somebody, it’s kind of like what I was doing in public office.
