Lessner and Muttamara-Walker Receive Young Conaway Pro Bono Service Awards
Attorneys Martin S. Lessner and D. Fon Muttamara-Walker have been recognized by their firm, Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP, for providing exemplary pro bono legal service to the community and the bar. The attorneys were honored for their continued commitment to providing representation to pro bono clients.

Lessner, who received the H. James Conaway, Jr. Pro Bono Award, is a partner in the firm’s Corporate Counseling and Litigation section. Muttamara-Walker, an associate in the Corporate Counseling and Litigation section, received the William F. Taylor Pro Bono Award.

“While there are many attorneys within the firm who are qualified to receive these awards, Marty and Fon really stood out,” said Young Conaway Chairman James L. Patton, Jr. “Marty continues to be a firm leader with his involvement in a number of pro bono efforts that benefit our community, and Fon’s pro bono and volunteer work has had a tremendous impact on the lives of others.”

Most recently, Lessner and fellow Young Conaway partner, Lisa B. Goodman, represented the Talleyville Girls Softball League in a hotly contested case regarding the construction of the league’s new fields. Lessner successfully pursued a motion to dismiss the neighborhood civic associations’ complaint for injunctive relief and alleged due process violations.

Muttamara-Walker has served as a Guardian Ad Litem with the Office of the Child Advocate in a number of cases. Recently, she worked with fellow Young Conaway associate, Stephanie Hansen, on a matter for the City of Seaford involving the rights of families who were burying soldiers killed in Iraq versus the rights of anti-war and pro-military protesters.

According to Patton, “Young Conaway has a long history of pro bono service in Delaware. Many of our attorneys have been involved in a variety of pro bono legal services, including the Office of the Child Advocate, Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, the Community Legal Aid Society and other worthwhile projects.” Patton went on to say, “We are proud that in 2006, Young Conaway attorneys donated over 6000 hours of pro bono support to the community.”

The H. James Conaway, Jr. Pro Bono Award is presented to firm partners who have provided exemplary pro bono legal service to the community and bar. The William F. Taylor Pro Bono Award is presented to firm associates who exemplify the firm’s commitment to pro bono service.

In recognition of each award, the firm contributes $1,000 per recipient to his or her charities of choice. This year, contributions will be made to the following charities: Child, Inc., Talleyville Girls Softball League, Naamans Little League, Bernard and Ruth Siegel Jewish Community Center and Delaware Greenways.

Greenberg Traurig Shareholder "Stash" Jacobs Honored at Annual Dinner Supporting Israeli City of Ariel
Stanley “Stash” Jacobs Jr., a shareholder in the Fort Lauderdale office of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, was honored at the American Friends of Ariel annual Peace With Security Dinner on Wednesday, March 7 at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center Beth Jacob.

“Stash and his family have a long-standing tradition of support for Israel and Jewish organizations, such as the American Friends of Ariel,” said Brian Sherr, co-managing shareholder of the Fort Lauderdale office of Greenberg Traurig. “We are proud that he has received this honor.”

"We are very proud of Stash and his commitment to the City of Ariel, and delighted that he has earned this well-deserved recognition," said Gary Epstein, Chair of the Greenberg Traurig's National Corporate and Securities Practice, and co-chair of its Israel Practice. "Our firm has a long history of both charitable and commercial involvement in Israel, and we are grateful to Stash for making his professional expertise and personal efforts available to Israeli causes and clients. Kol hakavod!”

Stash focuses his practice on corporate and securities law, including mergers and acquisitions and private equity and venture capital transactions. He regularly counsels established and emerging companies, entrepreneurs and investors in significant corporate and transactional matters.

Also honored at this year's dinner was Pastor Kelly Lyon, a part of the Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale family for the past 12 years. His role as the Outreach Pastor is to provide the 20,000 people attending the church with the vision and opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those in need worldwide. Pastor Kelly brings tour groups to Israel regularly and their visits to Ariel have become a highlight for those who travel with him.

The dinner’s keynote address was delivered by Ambassador Daniel Ayalon, who served as the Israeli Ambassador to the United States from 2002 to 2006, at a time when relations between the two countries reached an all time high. Ambassador Ayalon played a leading role in securing the agreement for $10 billion in U.S. grants and loan guarantees to Israel, the historic Exchange of Letters between President Bush and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and bilateral trade that reached $20 billion.

American Friends of Ariel was established in 1991 to help raise awareness and funding for The Ariel Development Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding facilities and services for education, culture, science, medicine and religion for those living in the community of Ariel, Israel. The annual dinner began in 1993 as a means to recognize those who have dedicated their time and efforts to the American Friends of Ariel and the Ariel Development Fund.

Judge Says Mariner's Village Apartment Complex Must Be Sold
In a noteworthy victory for Douglas R. Ring, Inc., and the Ring-Miscikowski Trust, both represented by Greenberg Traurig’s real estate litigation team, Judge Ronald M. Sohigian of the California Superior Court has ruled after a lengthy trial that the Marina Admiralty Co., the partnership owning the 981-unit Mariner’s Village apartment complex in Marina del Rey (“Mariner’s Village”), must be dissolved, and that Mariner’s Village must be sold. Douglas Ring and his wife, former City Councilwoman Cynthia Miscikowski, are co-trustees of the Ring-Miscikowski Trust, and Douglas is the son of Selden Ring, who along with his brother Ellis Ring comprised the well-known Los Angeles “Ring Brothers” apartment developers.

The co-owners of Marina Admiralty Co. are Doug Ring’s cousins, who hold their interests in the partnership through the Francis Ring and Ellis Ring Trusts. Doug Ring filed suit against his cousins to dissolve the partnership and to sell Mariner’s Village after a disagreement among the owners. Mariner’s Village is located on 23-1/2 acres of land leased from the County of Los Angeles. The lease expires in 2023.

“This was a difficult case because of the family connection, but we appreciate that Judge Sohigian recognized the importance of selling the asset and the difficult circumstances in which I was placed as a general partner,” Douglas Ring said. “Greenberg Traurig did an outstanding
job of articulating the reasons why it is in everyone’s best interests for the property to be sold, and the difficulties with my cousins.”

Eric V. Rowen, Scott D. Bertzyk and Eric S. Fisher of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, represented the plaintiffs, Douglas R. Ring, Inc., and the Ring-Miscikowski Trust.
