The Honorable Brenda Harbin-Forte, Judge of the Alameda County Superior Court, to Receive California Women Lawyers’ 2007 Rose Bird Memorial Award
The California Women Lawyers is pleased to announce that The Honorable Brenda Harbin-Forte,Judge, Alameda County Superior Court, will be the seventh recipient of CWL’s Rose Bird Memorial Award. The award will be bestowed on Judge Harbin-Forte at CWL’s Northern California Judicial Reception, to be held Friday, March 23, 2007, at the law firm of Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean LLP. California Women Lawyers is the statewide women’s bar association dedicated to improving the status of women in law.

The Rose Bird Memorial Award, which honors judges for judicial excellence, groundbreaking public service, and inspiration to California’s women lawyers, is named in memory of former Chief Justice Rose Bird, the first female Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court. Chief Justice Bird was appointed by then Governor Jerry Brown who recently took office as Attorney General. Among her many accomplishments, Justice Bird was the first woman appointed to the California cabinet and was one of the founders of CWL.

Judge Harbin-Forte has been a moving force in judicial education, having served on the faculty and later becoming the first African American woman to serve as Dean of California's B. E. Witkin Judicial College. She also served as Chair of CJER's New Judge Education Committee. Her achievements and contributions go well beyond judicial education. Judge Harbin-Forte was in the forefront on recognizing and identifying the sexual exploitation of teens; her work has resulted in systematic change that has put Alameda County at the forefront in the fight against the human trafficking of teens. Judge Harbin-Forte, while serving as Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Division, strengthened and empowered the CASA program, which provides special advocates for youth in the juvenile courts. Using her own story as an example for others to overcome challenges in order to succeed, Judge Harbin-Forte has served as a mentor and familiar face in the community talking to young people living at risk. She has been instrumental in the success of the Alameda County Adoption Day. In 2006, Judge Harbin-Forte again presided over the event that resulted in 780 children uniting with new families.

Judge Harbin-Forte is well-known and quite respected in the legal field. She graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1979 where she served as Class President. She was the first Black Woman to be President of the Alameda County Bar Association before being appointed to the Alameda County Bench in 1992 by then Governor Pete Wilson. Judge Harbin-Forte has taught multiple times on the elimination of bias in the legal community. She has also presented, along with the Governor’s Judicial Appointment Secretary, CWL’s highly regarded “So, You Want To Be A Judge?” seminar. Judge Harbin-Forte’s commitment to CWL as well as to women lawyers and lawyers of color is highly commendable. The Charles Houston Bar Association recognized Judge Harbin-Forte in 2006 with its Judicial Excellence Award.

Judge Harbin-Forte grew up in Oakland and is a 1972 graduate of McClymond’s High School in West Oakland.

This career achievement award will be presented at the law offices of Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean, David I. Wendel Conference Center, 1111 Broadway, 19th Floor, Oakland on March 23, 2007, from 5:30 –7:30 PM. Please call the CWL Executive Office at (916) 646-3114, or email info@cwl.org.
