WolfBlock Expands Corporate Practice in New York With Addition of Leslie Levinson
WolfBlock is pleased to announce that Leslie J. Levinson has joined the firm as a partner in the Corporate and Securities practice group and Health Law practice group. He will be resident in the firm's New York office and chair of the New York Corporate and Securities practice group.

During his more than 26 years representing public and private companies, Mr. Levinson has completed more than 300 M&A and financing transactions. While he represents a wide range of companies, Mr. Levinson concentrates his practice on transactions for clients within the health care and communications industries. He provides representation on acquisitions and dispositions, public and private offerings, securities compliance matters, secured and unsecured lending as well as many other types of commercial transactions.

"Les’ extensive transactional background and his ability to counsel clients in varied industries as well as his demonstrated leadership capabilities will make him a tremendous asset to our partnership and our clients," said Abby Wenzel, managing partner of WolfBlock's New York office. Mr. Levinson is the author of numerous publications on corporate and health law topics and is an active lecturer before various groups in the health care and communications industries. He is a member of the American Bar Association and its Federal Regulation of Securities Section and a member of the New York State Bar Association and its Health Law Section.

Mr. Levinson is admitted to practice in New York. He received his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1980 and his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1977.

DeLuca, Legaard and Group of Intellectual Property and Patent Professionals Join Pepper Hamilton
Pepper Hamilton LLP announced that Mark DeLuca and Paul K. Legaard, respected patent and intellectual property attorneys, have joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group as partners in the Berwyn office. Joining Pepper with them are four other lawyers, a patent agent and four paralegals.

“Mark, Paul and their group of IP professionals are a welcome addition to our intellectual property practice and to the firm,” said William A. Scari, Jr., the partner in charge of Pepper’s Berwyn office. “They are highly respected practitioners, and their collective knowledge will augment our existing practices with life sciences and pharmaceutical companies. We’re extremely excited and pleased that they have chosen to join Pepper.”

The group joined Pepper from Cozen O’Connor in Philadelphia, where Mr. DeLuca was co-chair of that firm’s intellectual property practice, and where Mr. DeLuca and Mr. Legaard had practiced since 2002. Before that, they had practiced at Woodcock Washburn LLP, a Philadelphia patent boutique.

Mr. DeLuca and Mr. Legaard focus their practices in the pharmaceutical and bioscience industries. Both have undergraduate degrees in biology, and Mr. Legaard has a doctorate degree in molecular microbiology and immunology.

“Joining Pepper is a very positive move for our group,” said Mr. DeLuca. “We’re looking forward to expanding our patent litigation capabilities and exploring areas such as life sciences, private equity and health effects litigation that our clients may wish to utilize.”

“The Berwyn office offers us a unique opportunity to grow our practice in a variety of areas,” added Mr. Legaard. “Pepper’s reputation in the life sciences arena is highly valuable, and we hope to help expand not only that practice, but also the focus of the firm’s intellectual property practice as a whole.”

Others joining Pepper with Mr. DeLuca and Mr. Legaard are: registered patent attorneys Michael A. Patané and Susanne H. Goodson, Ph.D.; associates Nikhil A. Heble, Pharm.D., and John A. Zurawski; registered patent agent Feng Shao; and paralegals Catherine T. Hill, Janet S. Jiulianti, Lisa Machado and Lori Roman. Four are working in the Berwyn office with Mr. DeLuca and Mr. Legaard; the other five are working in Pepper’s Philadelphia office.

Mr. DeLuca focuses his practice in all areas of intellectual property, including patent procurement, infringement and validity studies, licensing and intellectual property management. He counsels large pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, universities and nonprofit institutions in the areas of patent protection, the development of global patent strategies, technology transfer matters, and intellectual property portfolio management and analysis. He also counsels software and other technology companies in the area of standards licensing.

Mr. DeLuca’s technological experience is in the areas of molecular biology, peptide chemistry, immunology, vaccine technologies, diagnostics, genomics, proteomics, and rational drug discovery through the use of biochemistry and molecular biology. Earlier in his career, he was a patent attorney for a large pharmaceutical company.

Mr. DeLuca is an active member of several national, state and local bar associations, including the American Intellectual Property Association, where he serves on the Biotechnology Practice, Patent Law and Law Firm Management committees.

Mr. DeLuca received his undergraduate degree in biological sciences from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (B.S. 1982) and his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center (J.D. 1988). He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Legaard is a patent attorney who handles all aspects of intellectual property, including patent procurement, infringement and validity studies, and due diligence. He concentrates particularly in the areas of biotechnology, vaccines, organic chemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, immunology, pharmaceuticals, medicine, genomics, nucleic acids, biomedical devices, optical waveguides and polymer physics.

Mr. Legaard received his undergraduate degree in biology from Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, Minn.) (B.A. 1986). He completed a chemistry program at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, and received his doctoral training in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Ph.D. 1991). He completed post-doctoral training at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital (Columbia, Mo.) and the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Legaard received his J.D. in 1997 from Temple University Beasley School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Former Washington, DC, Planning Director Joins Nixon Peabody’s Real Estate Practice
Ms. McCarthy has joined the Washington, DC, office of Nixon Peabody as director of planning and land use. She will work closely with the attorneys in its Real Estate practice to meet the land use and zoning needs of the firm’s clients.

Ms. McCarthy has more than twenty years of experience in planning and development in the District of Columbia. She most recently served as director of Washington, DC’s Office of Planning, where she managed an agency of more than sixty planners and support specialists. During that time, Ms. McCarthy led the complete reengineering of the development review function, and was actively involved in efforts to create a program to revitalize dilapidated affordable housing projects into lively, mixed-income neighborhoods. Ms. McCarthy also oversaw the completion of planning efforts for the Anacostia Transit Station area, NoMA district, Georgia Avenue, Northeast Gateway, and Shaw/Convention Center area along with the adoption of new zoning for waterfront districts and large development projects. Her most significant accomplishment was the drafting of a new comprehensive plan for Washington, DC, which was unanimously adopted by the City Council and will guide planning and zoning in the city for the next twenty years.

Wiggin and Dana Promotes Three Attorneys to Partner and Two to Counsel
Wiggin and Dana LLP announced it has named Erika L. Amarante, Jonathan M. Freiman and Carrie A. Hanlon partners in the firm. The firm also promoted associates Sigrid E. Kun and Steven B. Malech to counsel.

Erika L. Amarante (New Haven) is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department. Her practice includes both trial and appellate litigation in federal and state court. Erika focuses her work on franchise and distribution law, federal Indian law, antitrust litigation and counseling, and complex civil and commercial litigation. Before joining Wiggin and Dana, Erika served as law clerk to Justices Richard Palmer and Francis McDonald on the Connecticut Supreme Court. She holds a J.D. (cum laude) from New York University School of Law and a B.A. from Cornell University.

Jonathan M. Freiman (New Haven) is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department. He handles appellate matters and complex cases, including transnational disputes. He has represented Fortune 100 companies, individuals, prominent non-profit foundations, universities, and foreign nations. He has been listed in the last two editions of The Best Lawyers in America (2006 & 2007). Recent cases include the successful defense for a university of a federal appeal involving a Nobel Prize winner’s claim to ownership of patent royalties, and the successful defense for a Fortune 500 company of a state appeal involving a rival company’s claim to millions of dollars in pre-judgment interest. Mr. Freiman holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he won the Albom Award for appellate advocacy and was Senior Editor of Yale Law Journal, and a B.A. from Oberlin College (with high honors; Phi Beta Kappa).

Carrie A. Hanlon (Stamford) is an intellectual property litigator in the firm’s Litigation Department. Her practice focuses on patent litigation encompassing a variety of technologies in the electrical, chemical, and mechanical arts, but she also has extensive experience in trademark, copyright and unfair competition litigation, as well as non litigation aspects of intellectual property management and protection. She regularly counsels clients on issues related to the management of national trademark and copyright enforcement programs, IP acquisitions and transfers, licensing, domain name enforcement and dispute resolution, and IP protection strategies. She holds a J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law and an A.B. from College of the Holy Cross.

New Counsel
Sigrid E. Kun (New Haven) is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department and Utilities and Regulated Industries practice group. Her clients include both regulated and unregulated entities, and she regularly provides counsel on issues related to mergers and acquisitions, as well as a broad range of contractual issues. She also represents clients before the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control in connection with various state regulatory issues. She holds a J.D. (magna cum laude) from Quinnipiac University School of Law and a B.S. from Ithaca College.

Steven B. Malech (New York) is a trade regulation and litigation attorney. He has handled a broad variety of antitrust and consumer protection matters before federal and state courts and administrative agencies. His experience also includes pre-merger analysis and the preparation of business contracts, including licensing agreements. Mr. Malech has also represented clients in connection with complex business, employment and intellectual property litigation. He holds a J.D. (with honors) from the University of Connecticut Law School and a B.A. (with special honors) from the University of Texas at Austin.
