Dykema Inaugurates Pro Bono Award To Honor The Work Of Longtime Attorney Activist
"Margaret A. Costello, member of Dykema’s Litigation Practice Group, has become the first recipient of the firm’s Margaret A. Costello Pro Bono Award – named to epitomize her efforts on behalf of the underserved and disenfranchised. From now on, this elite distinction will be presented bi-annually to the Dykema attorney or legal assistant who embodies Costello’s – and the firm’s – commitment to pro bono work.

""Peg Costello reminds us of the reason we all became lawyers in the first place,"" said Heidi Naasko, Dykema’s Pro Bono Coordinator. ""We’re at our best when we’re championing a cause – and Peggy has worked tirelessly to protect the rights of those whose voices are denied or ignored.""

Naasko believes Costello’s example is contagious and will continue to inspire attorneys throughout the firm and in the community. Dykema’s commitment to pro bono work has consistently earned the firm high rankings from the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc.

In addition, Dykema uses the voluntary standard for pro bono service that many states use as its mandatory requirement. Each attorney is expected to contribute a minimum of 30 hours of pro bono service each year or make a financial contribution to an approved legal services organization.

Costello is the recipient of the following awards and honors: Dykema Gossett Pro Bono Award (1994); Award of Merit from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (1996 and 2003); National Association of Women Lawyers Toch Award (1997); Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Pro Bono Excellence Award (1998); Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law Certificate of Recognition (2000); Wayne Center Distinguished Service Award (2000); and State Bar of Michigan John W. Cummiskey Award (2002).

An experienced trial lawyer and licensed psychologist, Costello’s practice focuses on litigation, dispute resolution and appeals, including bankruptcy and international litigation. In addition to advocating in U.S. courts, she successfully has presented cases before the U.S.-Iran Claims Tribunal and the Albanian Claims Commission, and also has advocated claims before the I.C.C. International Court of Arbitration.

Costello chairs Dykema’s Diversity Committee and is past chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee."
