Nutter client wins prize for inventiveness
Nathan Ball, co-founder and CTO of Atlas Devices LLC, a firm client, has been awarded the 2007 Lemelson-MIT prize for life-saving inventions. Nate, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student, received this prestigious $30,000 award partially for his role in developing the ATLAS Powered Rope Ascender along with his MIT colleagues Tim Fofonoff, Dan Walker, and Bryan Schmid.

The ATLAS Ascender, a device the size of a hand-held power tool, can lift a 250-pound load more than 600 feet into the air at nearly 10 feet per second, all in a single battery charge. The invention enables a fully loaded firefighter to reach the top of a 30-story building in only 30 seconds, a potentially life-saving improvement as it typically takes at least six minutes to trudge up the stairs with 80 to 100 pounds of equipment. Nate believes that this invention has many commercial applications including rescue work, recreational climbing and cave exploration, as well as urban warfare.

Atlas Devices LLC currently has four patents pending on the rope-handling mechanism and iterations of the device, written by Ronald Cahill, co-chair of the firm’s intellectual property practice. Gene Blumenreich, attorney in the firm's Business Department, helped Nate and his colleagues set up Atlas Devices LLC, which will develop and market the ATLAS Ascender.
