DAVID MALONE JOINS NORTHERN KENTUCKY OFFICE OF TAFT, STETTINIUS & HOLLISTER
David Malone has joined the Northern Kentucky office of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP as Of Counsel in the Public Finance Practice Group. Malone joins Taft as it expands its services to private and public clients for traditional governmental bonds, revenue bonds, economic development bonds, and tax increment financings. Prior to joining Taft, Malone was the General Manager of the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky and formerly a Partner of Peck, Shaffer & Williams LLP. Malone served as underwriter’s counsel, issuer’s counsel, and bond counsel in various types of tax-exempt and taxable financing.

Malone serves on the Board of Advisors for the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and Kentucky Bar Association.

A resident of Fort Thomas, Malone received his B.A. from Hanover College and his J.D. from Salmon P. Chase College of Law. He serves as Co-counsel to Trustees for the Bowling-Pfizer Heart Valve Settlement Funds.

Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP has offices in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton and Northern Kentucky. The firm provides a broad range of legal services to businesses and individuals, including litigation, corporate and business law, securities and municipal financing, tax and estate planning, labor and employment law, real estate and environmental, health care, intellectual property and unfair competition and antitrust law.

Simpson Thacher Represents Blackstone in $2.1 Billion Sale of German Residential Portfolio
Simpson Thacher represents Blackstone in connection with a sale of a majority of its interests in the Vitus Group which owns a portfolio of 31,000 apartments in Germany. The parties have reached a definitive agreement and the transaction is expected to close in April. Simpson Thacher represented Blackstone in its initial acquisition and subsequent refinancing of the Vitus Group.

The Simpson Thacher team working on the sale includes Farhad Karim, Alex Benjamin, and Nate Hagerman (Real Estate); Stephen Short and Clare Cottle (finance); Meredith Jones and Jenifer Marsh (Tax); and Jeanne Annarumma (Benefits).

DLA Piper appoints leading construction partner
DLA Piper is pleased to announce the appointment of Stuart Jordan as a partner in its Construction and Engineering Group. Stuart was previously a partner at Campbell Hooper where he founded their Major Projects Group.

Stuart has extensive experience in the drafting and negotiation of development agreements and construction contracts and a thorough grasp of Private/Public Sector procurement. Historically he was involved in a variety of construction projects at Campbell Hooper including the Greenwich Millennium Village, oil refinery work in the Middle East and leisure and development projects in Russia.

The arrival of a second new partner (Cecily Davis joined in November 2006 from Shadbolts) with significant experience of working with developers participating in major urban regeneration projects augments the already very substantial national business and represents another step in the continued growth of the team. The London business now comprises 3 partners, 2 associates and 4 assistants. Stuart's appointment is also in line with the firms plans to expand its regeneration practice.

Lawyer picks up prestigious legal award for loyalty to Sheffield
DLA Piper trainee solicitor Robyn Palmer has been awarded the Sidney Herbert Clay (Sheffield) Trust (1940) Prize by the Sheffield District Incorporated Law Society at their annual general meeting.

The annual award of £150 is presented to the most successful candidate on the Diploma in Legal Practice who undertakes their training contract with a law firm within 20 miles of Sheffield.

Award assessors chose Robyn (26), who graduated from the course in June 2006, as the worthy winner after she picked up five distinctions in modules including Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice, Litigation, Commercial Property and Mergers & Acquisitions.

Robyn's award follows two other prizes from the University of Sheffield. As a Law and Spanish student she won the Vaughan Bevan Memorial Award for her exceptional performance in the final Law examination and also the Nicholas Round Prize in Hispanic Studies to recognise her outstanding performance in practical interpreting skills.

Robyn, who is currently based in the real estate group at DLA Piper in Sheffield, said: "I am honoured to have won this award and delighted to be training in the city with one of the most respected legal providers in the region."

Duncan Mosley, partner at DLA Piper added: "Congratulations go to Robyn on her award. There are huge opportunities for young lawyers in this area and the Sidney Herbert Clay Award recognises those who stay and demonstrate their potential.

DLA Piper celebrates the opening of its office in Sofia
DLA Piper celebrated the official opening of its office in Sofia with a night of jazz at the city's historic Military Club.

Over 300 guests form international organisations were welcomed by Dr Karl Diem, Head of the Austrian Embassy in Bulgaria and Doyen of the Corps Diplomatique in Bulgaria; Michael B Humphreys, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria; as well as General Joseph W Ralston, Vice Chairman of the Cohen Group and former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

Ivo Deskovic, Regional Managing Partner for the CEE, explained that there has been a strong interest from international companies which do business in Bulgaria and said: "Thanks to the enormous demand for our services, we expect the number of employees in Sofia to double within the next 18 months. Although our office has opened only recently, we have already managed to secure clients such as Warner Brothers, Carrefour and Salamanca Capital."

The Sofia office will strengthen the presence of DLA Piper's 11 other offices across Central and Eastern Europe ("CEE") and the Commonwealth of Independent States ("CIS").

Peter Valert, DLA Piper's Office Managing Partner in Sofia said: "Bulgaria's EU-accession opens a new market not only for us but also for our clients. By establishing our own office in Sofia we are able to make sure that our clients are provided with high-quality advice in the most cost effective way directly on location."
