Cadwalader Wins Big at IFLR European Awards
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP was awarded ‘Structured Products - Team of the Year’ as well as ‘Deal of the Year’ in the ‘Structured Products’ and ‘Restructuring’ categories at the International Financial Law Review’s European awards ceremony last night. Cadwalader was also a finalist for ‘European Law Firm of the Year’ and ‘Restructuring - Team of the Year’.

These highly-regarded awards are based on detailed research from IFLR’s team of journalists in consultation with private practice lawyers, in-house counsel and financing specialists at investment banks around Europe. IFLR rewards outstanding innovation in debt and equity capital markets, M&A, project finance, securitisation and restructuring. This year, IFLR paid particular attention to growth in the structured products industry, where Cadwalader “stands-out among the firms nominated”.

The Anthracite commercial real estate CDO won ‘Structured Products - Deal of the Year’, attracting “much publicity amid hopes of a...take-off in Europe this year...”, and holding “the most potential to unlock a stream of copycat transactions.” Due to this, and remarkable work on other ‘firsts’ in the market including the Harbourmaster Pro Rata CLO 1 deal where the “innovative approach has sparked thinking on how collateral managers might compete with banks...”, Cadwalader was awarded the ‘Structured Products – Team of the Year’.

Cadwalader’s Financial Restructuring Department was awarded ‘Restructuring – Deal of the Year’ for their outstanding work on the notorious Eurotunnel transaction, as well as being noted as having an “impressive restructuring portfolio” and “[playing] a leading role in other shortlisted deals, most notably GUS and Kiekert...[and] the groundbreaking Polestar deal.

Michael Toner Joins Bryan Cave LLP; Former FEC Chairman to Establish Election Law Practice
Michael Toner has joined the international law firm Bryan Cave LLP as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. He also will serve as a senior advisor to Bryan Cave Strategies, the firm’s bipartisan public policy and government affairs subsidiary.

Toner has been a member of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) since 2002 and served as chairman during 2006. He will establish an election law practice at Bryan Cave and serve as the group’s leader.

“Michael Toner’s extensive experience with political campaigns and committees make him the perfect candidate to establish an election law practice at Bryan Cave,” said Don Lents, chairman of Bryan Cave. “He provides a depth of experience and expertise that our clients can draw upon to meet their needs in this important area.”

The arrival of Toner continues Bryan Cave’s ongoing expansion of the firm’s presence in political consulting. Recently, Broderick Johnson was named president of Bryan Cave Strategies. In addition, the firm’s partnership includes several elected officials, including Sen. John C. Danforth (R-MO), Sen. Alan J. Dixon (D-IL) and Edward I. Koch, former mayor of New York.

“The 2008 election season is shaping up to be an exciting opportunity for Bryan Cave to establish a broad footprint among national policymakers,” said Jack Oliver, chairman of Bryan Cave Strategies. “I’m delighted that Michael has joined the firm to contribute to the strategic expansion of our government affairs group.”

Toner was nominated to the FEC by President George W. Bush in 2002. Prior to his tenure at the FEC, Toner was general counsel of the Bush-Cheney Transition Team and the Bush-Cheney 2000 Presidential Campaign. He has also served as chief counsel of the Republican National Committee.

“My goal is to establish one of the best election law practices in the country,” Toner said. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with everyone at Bryan Cave to achieve this goal. The upcoming election cycle is going to involve many of the important issues that FEC has dealt with in recent years, so I look forward to helping corporations, trade associations, candidates and individuals understand and comply with the election laws.”

Toner has written extensively on the issues surrounding campaign finance and is a contributing author of Divided States of America: The Slash and Burn Politics of the 2004 Presidential Election, a book that offers analysis of the 2004 presidential election. Additionally, he has served as an adjunct professor of law at the William and Mary Law School and as a lecturer in the department of politics at the University of Virginia. Toner received his J.D., cum laude, in 1992 from Cornell Law School, his M.A. in 1989 from Johns Hopkins University and his B.A., with distinction, in 1986 from the University of Virginia.
