Corporate Specialist David Tang Joins Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner in Shanghai
David Tang, a respected senior corporate attorney with a focus on M&A and real estate finance, has joined Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner's Shanghai office as of counsel. Mr. Tang comes to Thelen from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe's office in Shanghai.

Mr. Tang practices in the Business Department in the Shanghai office. His work focuses on general commercial, corporate, and real estate work, including cross-border direct investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate compliance, real estate development, and finance. He also has significant experience in employment-related matters, venture capital investment, and commercial dispute resolution. In his 15 years of practice, Mr. Tang has helped a number of multinational companies establish businesses and expand in China.

Mr. Tang said his decision to join Thelen was due in large part to the firm's rapid growth in China. Since receiving a license to operate in China in August, Thelen's Shanghai office has expanded from two partners to 11 legal personnel. The firm recently relocated to a larger space in order to accommodate its expanding practice.

In all, Thelen now has more than 40 attorneys on its firm-wide China team. Several full-time members work out of the firm's Washington, DC office; others are based in the New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Silicon Valley offices.

Much of the team's recent work has focused on taking Chinese companies public in the U.S., as well as complex private financings and M&As. The firm also regularly advises foreign companies doing business in the PRC on construction, labor and employment, and intellectual property matters.

"The amount of growth the firm has seen in such a short time is phenomenal," said Mr. Tang. "I am really excited to be a part of such a dynamic office."

Office Managing Partner Thomas Shoesmith said Mr. Tang is an excellent fit. "We are very happy that David chose to bring his wealth of China experience to Thelen," Mr. Shoesmith said. "David's 15 years of experience in China's rapidly-developing legal market also gives our clients access to the kind of experience that only comes with a decade and a half of practice in the PRC," said Shoesmith.

Mr. Shoesmith added that Mr. Tang's real estate finance experience will allow Thelen to begin handling structured finance deals in China, similar to the finance work the firm handles in the United States and Europe on behalf of major Wall Street investment banks.

Further recent additions to the China team include Richard Chao, who joins the firm as a Business associate in the Shanghai office. Richard comes to Thelen from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. Previously, he worked as Project and Account Manager for Elitegroup Computer Systems, i2Technologies, Commerce One in Silicon Valley and Singapore, and also served for five years in the U.S. Navy as a Public Affairs Officer stationed in China and Japan.
