Stephanie Lewis Nominated for Jefferson Award
For her personal commitment of time, enthusiasm, energy and expertise, Charleston Associate Stephanie Lewis has been nominated by Crisis Ministries for a prestigious Jefferson Award.

Ms. Lewis is a co-founder of the Crisis Ministries Homeless Justice project. She first visited Crisis Ministries as a Soup Kitchen volunteer, helping prepare and serve hot, lunchtime meals to those in need. A few years later, she joined the shelter’s board of directors and began putting the Homeless Justice Project together.

The Homeless Justice Project partners local attorneys with Charleston School of Law students to represent shelter clients. Since January 2006, the clinic has served 82 clients with more than 100 substantive legal issues. She has managed 18 of those cases herself and has recruited many colleagues to join the effort. Cases involve Social Security/disability matters, landlord/tenant disputes, domestic issues, tax issues, trusts and estates, health care power of attorney forms, and restraining orders. For example, Ms. H needed help acquiring back child support to make ends meet for herself and her teenage son. Ms. C, who is deaf, asked for help maintaining parental rights in a DSS hearing.

Ms. Lewis’s commitment began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Law. She helped build the foundation for the school's nationally recognized Pro Bono Program, which is nearing 10 years of service.

The South Carolina Bar awarded Ms. Lewis a 2006 Pro Bono award as an outstanding volunteer lawyer. Since joining private practice in 2004, she has donated more than 1,000 hours in pro bono service.

In addition to her work with the homeless, Ms. Lewis serves as a mentor to students at the Charleston School of Law and presents continuing legal education programs in conjunction with Crisis Ministries, Nelson Mullins, the Charleston School of Law, Pro Bono Legal Services and the S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center.

"The numerous individuals and families who have been helped by Stephanie’s volunteerism would be proud to see her recognized as a Jefferson Award winner," Missy Hatley, Crisis Ministries Community Relations director, said in her nomination.
