FAMILY OF WELDER KILLED IN WORK FALL AT BROOKLYN SHIPYARDS FILES WRONGFUL DEATH ACTION
"Cira Bautista Vasquez and her son Victor Arturo Medina Bautista today filed a wrongful death action based on the death of Gumersindo Medina Duarte on January 23, 2007. Mr. Medina, age 36 and the husband of Ms. Bautista and father of Victor, died while working as a welder on a tanker barge in dry dock at GMD Shipyard Corporation in Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Medina fell off a hull access ladder, landing on the hull base sixty feet below, causing severe trauma to his head and torso. Mr. Medina struggled to survive but died within hours of the fall.

""The Complaint alleges that defendants were negligent in failing to provide Mr. Medina with any safety equipment or harness to hold him in case of a fall,"" commented Wendy R. Fleishman, counsel for plaintiffs. ""This was the second recent senseless death at the shipyards. We want to see the working conditions change before another life is lost.""

Representing plaintiffs are Wendy R. Fleishman of the New York office of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, Joseph S. Jaworski of the Jaworski Law Firm of Galveston, Texas, and Enrique Serna of Serna & Associates PLC of San Antonio, Texas.
The defendants in the action are dry dock owners FCE Industries, LTd. and GMD Shipyard Corporation, and Allied Transportation LLC, owner of the vessel on which Mr. Medina died.

Taft Announces Timothy Reilly as Chair of the Labor and Employment Department
Timothy P. Reilly, a partner in the Labor and Employment Law Department, at Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP, has been appointed to serve as chair of the firm’s Labor and Employment Department.

Reilly, a resident of Cincinnati, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Law, where he was an editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.

Reilly represents employers in all forms of employment litigation and has handled matters involving the Fair Labor Standards Act; managed NLRB practices; defended OSHA citation cases; advised clients on employment policies and procedures and served as chief negotiator in over 200 collective bargaining negotiations. Reilly is admitted to the Ohio Bar and the United States Courts of Appeal for the Second, Third, Sixth and Seventh Circuits.

Ms. Bevitt is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s London office. Her practice covers all aspects of employment law and human resources-related matters, both contentious and non-contentious. Ms. Bevitt works with a wide range of clients from a broad spectrum of industry sectors, including insurance, banking and financial services, venture capital and private equity, recruitment and employment, life sciences and technology. Ms. Bevitt was called to the Bar in 1992, after graduating from Oxford University. Thomas T.H. Chou
Mr. Chou is a member of the Corporate Group and resident in the firm’s Shanghai and Palo Alto offices. His practice focuses on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital financings and joint ventures and strategic alliances. Jason A. Crotty
Mr. Crotty is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s San Francisco office. His practice focuses on intellectual property with an emphasis on patent litigation. He has represented clients as both plaintiffs and defendants in several technologies, both in district courts and on appeal in the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Crotty received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1997. Following graduation, he served as law clerk to Judge William B. Shubb of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California in Sacramento. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 1998.

Natalie Diep
Ms. Diep is a member of the Corporate Group and resident in the firm’s London office. She advises on a wide range of corporate issues, including equity offerings, private placements, IPOs, and mergers and acquisitions. She spent a year as Legal Counsel for the Equity Capital Markets department of Lehman Brothers before joining the firm. Ms. Diep qualified as a solicitor in 1998. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 2005.

Wendy M. Garbers
Ms. Garbers is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s San Francisco office. She has a broad-based litigation practice, with an emphasis on trial work, financial services cases, and consumer class actions. Ms. Garbers received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, magna cum laude, in 1998. After graduating from law school, Ms. Garbers served as a law clerk to the Honorable James B. Loken, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 2001.

Yaeko Hodaka
Ms. Hodaka is a member of the Corporate Group and resident in the firm’s Tokyo office. Her practice encompasses M&A, general corporate and litigation matters, including director’s liability issues, hostile takeover defense and other contract disputes. Ms. Hodaka received her LL.B. from Keio University in 1988, graduated from the Legal Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court of Japan in 1992, and received her LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 1998 and her MBA degree, magna cum laude, in 2004 from the International University in Geneva. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 2004.

Richard S.J. Hung
Mr. Hung is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s San Francisco office. His practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and counseling. His patent matters have involved technologies such as biometric authentication, digital rights management, interactive television, Internet protocols, polymer chemistry, and public key encryption. Mr. Hung received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1998, where he was a James Kent Scholar and a moot court editor and judge. Before joining the firm, Mr. Hung clerked for the Honorable Paul Michel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2000.

Jeffrey Jaeckel
Mr. Jaeckel is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He has particular experience representing corporations in connection with private antitrust litigation and in guiding corporations through the domestic and international merger review process. Mr. Jaeckel also assists clients in the protection of their intellectual property and counsels clients on the antitrust ramifications of commercial agreements to capitalize on the value of intellectual property. Mr. Jaeckel received his J.D., with honors, in 1998 from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he served as a member of the writing staff for the Wisconsin Environmental Law Journal and was selected to the Order of the Coif. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2001.

Scott A. Jalowayski
Mr. Jalowayski is a member of the Corporate Group and resident in the firm’s Hong Kong office. His practice is focused on China-related investments by investment banks, private equity funds and multinationals, and involves a broad range of cross-border transactional work, including mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions (including LBOs), restructurings, and venture financings. Mr. Jalowayski also has significant Japan-related cross-border transactional experience, having been previously based in Morrison & Foerster’s Tokyo office. Mr. Jalowayski received his J.D., summa cum laude, from New York Law School in 1998. While at New York Law School, Mr. Jalowayski was an Articles Editor of the New York Law School Law Review. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2000.

Richard C. Kim
Mr. Kim is a member of the Patent Group and resident in the firm’s San Diego office. His practice focuses primarily on patent procurement and intellectual property litigation. Mr. Kim has assisted clients, including start-ups and established corporations, in procuring patents and developing patent portfolio strategies in a variety of technological fields. Mr. Kim received his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1995. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2000.

Glenn M. Kubota
Mr. Kubota is a member of the Patent Group and resident in the firm’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices. He specializes in patent prosecution, client counseling, and litigation support for high technology clients. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Kubota worked at Hughes Aircraft Company in the Space and Communications Group for over 12 years. Mr. Kubota received a B.S in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1984 and 1986, respectively, and received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1997. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2001.

Scott F. Llewellyn
Mr. Llewellyn is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s Denver office. His practice involves complex litigation before state and federal courts throughout the country, with an emphasis on patent disputes. Mr. Llewellyn received his J.D. from theUniversity of Michigan Law School, cum laude, in 1997, where he served as Executive Articles Editor for the Michigan Telecommunications and Technology Law Review. After law school, Mr. Llewellyn clerked for the Honorable Clarence A. Brimmer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming, and for the Honorable Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2003.

Scott A. McPhee
Mr. McPhee is a member of the Real Estate Group and resident in the firm’s Los Angeles office. His practice covers a broad range of real estate and finance transactions, with a particular emphasis on capital markets (CMBS) financing, mezzanine and other subordinate loans, syndicated credit facilities, loan repurchase and warehouse facilities, and construction lending. Mr. McPhee received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1998. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 1998.

Mark David McPherson
Mr. McPherson is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s New York office. His wide-ranging litigation practice includes representing companies and individuals in class action lawsuits, complex commercial disputes, and internal and regulatory investigations. Mr. McPherson received his J.D., with high distinction, from the University of Iowa in 1997, where he was a member of the Iowa Law Review, the National Moot Court Team and the Order of Coif. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 1999.

Andrew D. Morrison
Mr. Morrison is a member of the Real Estate Group and resident in the firm’s Tokyo office. His practice covers a variety of areas including real estate, project finance and development, joint ventures, and strategic alliances. Mr. Morrison received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1998, where he was a Student Authorities Editor for the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2000.

Brandon C. Parris
Mr. Parris is a member of the Corporate Group and resident in the firm’s Orange County office. His practice focuses on securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate counseling, representing companies in a variety of industries including biotech, healthcare, high-technology, financial services, and gaming. Mr. Parris received his J.D. from the University of California at Davis in 1998 where he served as Senior Notes and Comments Editor of the University of California, Davis Law Review. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 1998.

Anne Marie (Amie) Peters
Ms. Peters is a member of the Corporate Group and resident in the firm’s Palo Alto office. Her practice focuses on representing start-up and emerging growth companies, particularly in the life sciences area, as well as a number of public companies. She received her J.D. and M.B.A. degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 1998, where she was Executive Editor for the University of California, Davis Law Review. From 1991 to 1995, prior to attending law school, Ms. Peters worked for Chiron Corporation, a biotechnology company, focusing on diagnostic and blood screening systems for infectious disease. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 1999.

Tessa J. Schwartz
Ms. Schwartz is a member of the Technology Transactions Group and resident in the firm’s San Francisco office. Her practice focuses on counseling companies regarding intellectual property and information technology issues and negotiating complex commercial and intellectual property agreements. Ms. Schwartz also provides intellectual property expertise for mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic alliances. She regularly advises clients on pre-litigation, risk management, and contract compliance issues. Ms. Schwartz received her J.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1996, where she was elected to the Order of the Coif. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 1996.

Laura O. Spiegelman
Ms. Spiegelman is a member of the Life Sciences Technology Transactions and Venture Intellectual Property Groups and resident in the firm’s San Francisco and Palo Alto offices. She focuses on biotechnology and life sciences corporate partnering and licensing deals. She received her J.D.Order of the Coiffrom Stanford Law School in 1999, where she was a member editor for the Stanford Law Review, founding member of the Stanford Technology Law Review, and recipient of a fellowship to study biotechnology transfer patterns in France. Her practice draws on her prior in-house general counseling experience at public biotechnology company Kosan Biosciences and her scientific background, including research at Hybritech, Syngene, and Canji and an undergraduate thesis in nuclear membrane dynamics. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 2004.

Nancy R. Thomas
Ms. Thomas is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s Los Angeles office. Her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, principally in the areas of class action defense and the trial and arbitration of business disputes. Ms. Thomas received her J.D., cum laude, from The University of Chicago Law School in 1992. She was an Associate Editor of The University of Chicago Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. She joined Morrison & Foerster in 1993.

M. Andrew Woodmansee
Mr. Woodmansee is a member of the Litigation Department and resident in the firm’s San Diego office. His practice focuses on patent litigation, and he has litigated patent infringement matters involving technology related to the semiconductor, biotechnology, medical device, and telecommunications industries. He has tried patent cases in both bench and jury trials, has been involved in patent infringement litigation before the United States International Trade Commission, and has represented clients before the Federal Circuit. Mr. Woodmansee received his J.D. from the Notre Dame Law School in 1996. While in law school, he was a White Scholar in the University’s Thomas J. White Center for Law and Government and served as Executive Editor of the Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy. He joined Morrison & Foerster in 2000.

Holland & Knight Adds High Profile Lawyer to Chair Its Chicago Health Law Team
"Holland & Knight LLP continues the strategic growth of its national health law practice with the addition of Anne Murphy as partner and chair of the Chicago Health Law Team. Murphy also will serve as a member of the firm's national Health and Life Sciences Team, as well as its Industry Compliance Team. Murphy brings more than 20 years of government and private sector experience in health law and litigation. She was chief counsel for the Illinois Department of Public Health, serving as privacy officer, ethics officer, general counsel to the Health Facilities Planning Board, and chair of the Governor's HIPAA Task Force. Earlier in her career, Murphy was vice president, Health Law and Litigation, for the American Medical Association, and practice leader for the Health Law Department at a large Chicago law firm.

Murphy is a member of the Board of Directors for the Public Health Law Association, and served as its president from June 2004-2005. She has served in leadership positions with numerous professional organizations, and frequently speaks and writes on health law topics. She earned her A.B. cum laude from Bowdoin College and her J.D. cum laude from Boston University School of Law.

Hogan & Hartson Continues Expansion of Hong Kong Office With Addition of Securities Partner
"Hogan & Hartson LLP announced today the addition of Man Chiu Lee to the firm’s corporate and securities practice. He joins as a partner in Hong Kong.

Proficient in Chinese, Man Chiu Lee is an experienced corporate transactions and U.S. securities lawyer. His practice covers a broad range of transactions, including securities offerings, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital investments, and general corporate and banking matters in Hong Kong, the United States, and Japan.

Two Dykema Members Speak At ICLE Labor & Employment Law Institute
