Blackwell Sanders Client Prevails in Election Recount
Kay Dolan, a candidate for Johnson County (Missouri) Auditor in the November 7 general election, hired Blackwell Sanders attorneys Pat McInerney and Leslie Chambers to contest the results of the election on the basis of margin, and to challenge irregularities in the voting process.

Blackwell Sanders filed suit in Circuit Court of Johnson County, Missouri, and asked for a hand recount of electronically scanned ballots, due to allegations of improper ballot security. The Court ordered the hand recount, and Blackwell Sanders represented Dolan through the eight-day recount process. The recount turned the election in favor of Dolan, and she was sworn in to her rightful office on March 7.

Work on First Patent Issued in USPTO's Accelerated Program Earn Arpin, Churna Recognition
The United States Patent and Trademark office launched an accelerated patent examination procedure in August 2006. On March 13, 2007, the first patent that was filed within this program was issued to Baker Botts client, Brother Industries, for a new printer ink gauge. The patent was originally filed in September 2006 making the whole process, from submission to the patent being issued, under six months.

Washington partner, James Arpin, and Washington associate, Tim Churna, worked on the patent for Brother Industries and attended a signing ceremony held on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the USPTO's headquarters.

In a story about the new procedure, Arpin told IP Law360: "The new process is a great leap forward, even if it wouldn't’t be used by a majority of filers or address some of the agency’s big challenges. This program isn’t something you’d use in all cases, because it involves a significant investment in time and effort prior to filing. It’s quite demanding prosecution, but it gives the client great value."

According to Arpin, that value includes getting products to market sooner, getting faster protection for products already on the market, patenting products in highly competitive fields, and trying to get venture capital from investors that want to see tangible assets.
