B&B Adds Mississippi Attorneys
Balch & Bingham LLP raised its profile in Mississippi this month, hiring away a group of attorneys from a local firm in Jackson in a move to establish a litigation practice in the capital city and enhance its litigation capabilities statewide.

The five new Jackson-based attorneys - William L. Smith; William C. Reeves; Donald Alan Windham Jr.; Bradley M. Reeves; and Ernest Taylor - joined Balch & Bingham from Smith Reeves & Yarborough PLLC.

Experienced litigators, the five men bring with them expertise in environmental, pharmaceutical and chemical exposure as well as real estate, property rights, oil and gas, complex and mass tort litigation, said Scott Andress, Balch & Bingham's office managing partner in Jackson. Their addition brings to 15 the number of Balch & Bingham attorneys in Jackson, where the firm works in the areas of labor and employment, public finance, gaming, governmental relations and commercial transactions.

The firm is building out its Jackson office to make room for its larger staff; work is expected to be completed in mid-February.

Smith said Smith Reeves & Yarborough attorneys had been approached by several regional firms about joining forces before signing on with Balch & Bingham. He said he was impressed by the range of the firm's expertise as well as the quality of its people. "Balch looked like a real good marriage to us," he said. And for Smith Reeves' younger attorneys and clerical staff, "a bigger instiution offered some training opportunities that we weren't going to be able to."

Smith and William Reeves, law school friends at the University of Mississippi, worked for years with large Mississippi firms before launching Smith Reeves & Yarborough as a boutique litigation firm four years ago. The firm grew quickly but eventually found itself in need of expertise, such as bankruptcy, commercial transaction work and bank regulatory work, it did not possess in-house.

Smith and Reeves began talks with former Mississippi House Speaker Tim Ford, another law school friend who had joined Balch's Jackson office in 2003, and a deal was struck.

Five of Smith Reeves & Yarborough's 10 attorneys, as well as five paralegals, joined Balch, and the small firm was dissolved as of Jan. 1, Smith said. Smith Reeves other five attorneys have moved on to various endeavors, he said.

Separately, Balch & Bingham's second Mississippi office, in Gulfport, recently brought aboard two new attorneys, Todd Crawford and Jeramie Fortenberry. Together, the seven new additions bring the number of Balch & Bingham attorneys in Mississippi to about 35.
