Kaye Scholer Successfully Defends Pfizer's Celebrex® Patent
A federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey found that Pfizer Inc.'s patents for celecoxib, the active ingredient in Celebrex®, for formulations containing celecoxib and for methods of treatment using celecoxib are valid and enforceable, and are infringed by Teva Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. Teva sought to produce and market a generic version of Pfizer's blockbuster drug Celebrex® for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The Court found that Teva failed to prove obviousness, inequitable conduct, a violation of the best mode requirement, or obvious-type double patenting by clear and convincing evidence. Thus, the patents-in-suit are neither invalid nor unenforceable, and Teva has infringed the patents. The Kaye Scholer team included partners Leora Ben-Ami, Thomas F. Fleming and Daniel L. Reisner, counsel Jeffrey H. Horowitz and Christopher T. Jagoe, associates Krista M. Rycroft, Daniel M. Boglioli, Matthew D. Kohel, Abigail L. Langsam and Daniel Forchheimer, legal assistants Denise Lopez, Joseph Boucher, Brooke Borel, Jay Chen, Megan Petty and Odetta Cohen, all in the Patent Litigation Department, and scientific advisors Anthony Khong and Karl Dresdner.

Adams and Reese Recognizes Law Students for Commitment to Pro Bono Service
"For the second consecutive year, Adams and Reese will award two Mississippi law students with scholarships in recognition of their commitment to pro bono legal services. This year’s recipients, Allison Korn of the University of Mississippi Law School, and Kevin Berg of the Mississippi College School of Law, will each receive $1,000. They were selected because of their voluntary pro bono efforts to assist the indigent while in law school, and because they show promise in developing and continuing a tradition of pro bono service throughout their legal careers. Furthermore, the students exemplify the philanthropic and service-oriented culture at Adams and Reese, and its dedication to serving the needs of the communities where we work and live.

“At Adams and Reese, pro bono service is something we take very seriously,” says Gee Ogletree, who initiated the creation of the scholarships in 2006 and serves as the Pro Bono Partner in Jackson. “This is reflected in a new firm policy enacted this year that requires each of our attorneys to complete a minimum of 10 hours of pro bono service. Many of our attorneys have already committed to do much more, including all of our Mississippi attorneys who have each agreed to complete 20 hours of pro bono service this year.""

Each year, attorneys in the Jackson office of Adams and Reese accept a variety of pro bono cases through the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, on which Ogletree serves on the Board of Directors. Ogletree, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project. He also leads the office’s pro bono efforts through the CA&RE (Caring Adams and Reese Employees) program that was established in 2000. Since then, attorneys in all 10 regional offices of Adams and Reese have handled hundreds of individual pro bono cases. Over the years, various individuals and the firm as a whole have been presented with awards for their volunteer efforts with the CA&RE program. In 2001, the firm was recognized by the Mississippi Pro Bono Project as the “Pro Bono Firm of the Year."
