Shannnon L. Williams Joins Carlton Fields as Director of Attorney Recruitment
Carlton Fields is pleased to announce that Shannon L. Williams has joined the firm as Director of Attorney Recruitment, on March 12, 2007, resident in the Tampa office.

In this position, Williams will be responsible for firmwide attorney recruitment and hiring efforts. Her initiatives will include effectively linking the firm’s attorney recruitment, diversity, and retention efforts to overall firm strategic goals and objectives. Williams will work closely with the Chairs of the firm’s Attorney Recruiting, Retention and Diversity Committees, Practice Group Leaders, Office Managing Shareholders, and with the firm’s CEO and Executive Director.

Williams served most recently as the Manager of New Lawyer Hiring at Baker & Daniels, LLP, in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she had responsibility for the new lawyer and summer associate hiring programs. Prior to joining Baker & Daniels, Williams was the Director of Professional Development at Indiana University School of Law. She received a bachelor’s degree from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Indianapolis in 1999. Williams is a member of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP).

Carlton Fields Attorney, Mark P. Rankin, Published in Criminal Law Magazine, The Champion
Carlton Fields Tampa attorney, Mark P. Rankin, was published in the March 2007 issue of The Champion, the magazine of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). The Champion is the premiere publication of interest for criminal law practitioners and is read by thousands of members of NACDL. Rankin's article pertains to the debatable question of whether, after United States v. Booker, federal courts must give prior notice before departing from the Sentencing Guidelines' advisory range.

Rankin practices in the firm’s White Collar Crime and Government Investigations Practice Group. Prior to joining Carlton Fields, he was an Assistant Federal Public Defender with the Federal Public Defender’s Office, where he served as a trial and appellate counsel to criminal defendants charged with a wide range of cases including fraud offenses, drug offenses, immigration matters, and firearms offenses. Rankin received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1999 and his B.S. in Criminal Justice, magna cum laude, from Old Dominion University in 1996.

Morris Gives Lecture on Erasing Criminal Convictions
Goldberg Katzman attorney Royce Morris gave a lecture on how to erase criminal convictions from one's record. Entitled "Pardon Me? I'm Not a Criminal!" the lecture covered such matters as expunging convictions, how the pardon system works, and the consequences of criminal convictions. It was held at the Widener School of Law. This lecture is part of the PACDL Criminal Defense Resource Center Law Colloquia, a free series of lectures for the public that are part of a project financed by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Winstead Adds 10 More Attorneys from Jenkens & Gilchrist in Austin and Dallas Offices
Growth continues at Texas-based law firm Winstead PC as 10 more attorneys, one patent agent and 18 support staff from Jenkens & Gilchrist move to Winstead Offices in Austin and Dallas. According to Chairman and CEO Denis Braham, "This has been an excellent union of talented lawyers with a law firm committed to expanding our capabilities in core client industries by bringing the right legal minds to the table to handle complex, high stakes business challenges for our clients."

New shareholders in Winstead's Austin Office include Gary Zausmer and William Parrish, litigators who have been described as two of the most outstanding trial lawyers in Austin. Tax attorney Michael Cook also joins the Austin Office of Winstead. "Mike has worked in Austin for over 40 years. He has a stellar reputation with the region's real estate and business community and he received the Distinguished Lawyer Award from the Austin Bar Association in 2004," said J. Rowland Cook, former J&G managing partner of the Austin Office who is now a Winstead shareholder. Winstead added three new associates in the Austin Office as well. They are Corby Brooks, Jason Flaherty and Carl Myers.

In Winstead's Dallas Office, the intellectual property section will be strengthened with the additions of Stanley Moore, Ross Robinson, Cathryn Berryman and Andrea Walker. Moore and Robinson have mechanical engineering and electrical engineering degrees respectively and are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Moore is the former IP department head at Jenkens & Gilchrist. He brings over 30 years of experience in patent and trademark law to Winstead and he was the 2004 chair of the Dallas Bar Association's IP Section. Berryman has over 15 years of experience, assisting clients with domestic and international intellectual property transactions and licensing (patent, copyright and trademark) as well as copyright and trademark (State and Federal) filings and prosecution.

Immigration attorneys Harry Joe and Rebecca Massiatte also joined Winstead's Dallas Office bringing over 35 years experience in immigration and nationality law. Joe practices before the U.S. immigration and Naturalization Service and at U.S. Consuls around the world and he is a certified specialist in Immigration and Nationality Law.

Mark Mirkin Joins Williams Mullen in RTP
Williams Mullen today announced that corporate and securities law attorney Mark H. Mirkin has joined the firm's Corporate Finance & Securities Section as partner. Williams Mullen recently combined forces with Maupin Taylor, and Mark is the first to join the merged entity in its Research Triangle Park office. His practice emphasis includes entrepreneurship and emerging growth companies.

Mark is admitted to practice in Florida and North Carolina and is active in the American and North Carolina bar associations. He received a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, from Duke University and a juris doctor degree from Duke University School of Law. For two decades, Mark has represented clients in private placements and public offerings of equity, debt and convertible securities, venture capital financing, mergers, acquisitions and divestitures. Mirkin has structured and formed hundreds of new companies and regularly negotiates and orchestrates seed and early stage investment capital financing for client companies including those in the life sciences and information technology industries. He has advocated for clients with securities regulators at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and at numerous state Blue Sky commissions.

Mark is a frequent speaker and lecturer on business topics and is active in professional and civic groups. He currently serves as a member of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, the Association for Corporate Growth, the Licensing Executives Society, the North Carolina Entrepreneurial Association and the North Carolina Innovation Foundation.
