Crewdson and Fielden join DLA Piper’s Atlanta office
DLA Piper US LLP announced that Robert Crewdson and Brian Fielden have joined the firm as partners with the firm’s Atlanta office. Crewdson and Fielden both come to DLA Piper from Alston & Bird LLP.

The addition of Crewdson and Fielden represents the latest milestone in the expansion of the firm’s Atlanta office. Since entering the Atlanta market in May of 2006, DLA Piper has added nearly 30 attorneys throughout key practice groups, including Corporate and Securities, Finance, Litigation and Real Estate.

“Robert and Brian’s breadth of experience handling the documentation of the design and construction for major commercial real estate development projects will contribute greatly to the growth and sophistication of our real estate practice in the Southeast,” said Mark E. Grantham, managing partner of DLA Piper’s Atlanta office. “Their arrival continues our commitment to build the firm’s Atlanta presence substantially by adding attorneys who are recognized as among the most respected lawyers in their field here in the South.”

Crewdson focuses his practice on the transactional and litigation needs of national owners, developers and contractors in the commercial real estate development industry. His practice emphasizes risk management and claims avoidance, working closely with national development firms to provide counsel on contract preparation, internal contracting procedures, claims avoidance practices and in-house staff training. Crewdson also handles significant disputes for owners and contractors, including mediation, arbitration and state and federal litigation matters.

“DLA Piper’s multidisciplinary real estate platform is closely aligned with the growing needs of our national construction clients,” added Crewdson. “The national and international footprint of DLA Piper will allow us to bring greater efficiency and resources to bear on the diverse geographic needs of our clients.”

Fielden concentrates his construction law practice on the representation of national owners and contractors in the area of contract drafting and negotiation and risk management. His transactional work has involved hotels, condominiums, condo hotels, shopping centers, mixed-used developments and office buildings. Fielden also represents clients in all phases of construction arbitration and litigation involving hotel developments, hospitals, office buildings, water treatment facilities, performing arts centers and combined cycle power plants.

“We are excited Robert and Brian are bringing their national practice to DLA Piper and look forward to the strong foundation they provide our real estate practice in Atlanta,” said Jay Epstien, chair of DLA Piper’s U.S. real estate practice. “They are highly respected and share a unique network of construction, transactional and real estate contacts that will complement and fuel the firm’s growth opportunities throughout the Southeast.”

Crewdson has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for the past two years. Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business cites him as a leading Georgia lawyer for construction matters. He is also a past president of the Construction Section of the Atlanta Bar Association and frequently lectures on a variety of construction law topics.

Fielden is a member of the Academy of Hospitality Industry Attorneys and serves on the planning committee for the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), frequently speaking at the ALIS conference on construction and development issues.

In 2005, DLA Piper opened its Raleigh office with another team of prominent real estate attorneys from Alston & Bird. Led by partners Brad S. Markoff, William R. Klapp, Jr., Robert H. Bergdolt, Jeffrey M. Sullivan and Jeffrey D. Miller, DLA Piper added one of the most sophisticated REIT securities and corporate practices in the country.

Consistently ranked as the world’s top real estate practice by leading industry research firms, DLA Piper continues to diversify its real estate practice by expanding its global capabilities through the addition of leading practitioners throughout the world. With more than 250 real estate lawyers in offices throughout the United States, and more than 550 throughout the world, DLA Piper provides a full range of transactional and advisory services to real estate-related firms, such as developers, investors, lenders and asset managers. The firm also provides advice relating to acquisitions, dispositions, financing, leasing, entitlements, economic incentives, corporate facilities and related legal services to its clients.

Rotterdam Office to focus on niche market as a separate law firm
DLA Piper today announced that its Rotterdam office will separate from DLA Piper International LLP, with effect from 1 June 2007. The Rotterdam office, which specialises in international trade, transport and insurance law, has three partners and nine other lawyers. Ownership of the office will transfer to the three partners and it will be managed as an independent law firm by Marc Padberg and Michiel Spanjaart.

DLA Piper will continue to provide clients in the Netherlands with a broad range of legal services from its office in Amsterdam, comprising over 100 lawyers and 27 partners. While terms are still being agreed, some members of the team in Rotterdam are expected to transfer to the Amsterdam office.

The decision to separate the Rotterdam office from the rest of the business was reached amicably and will be formalised by the Board later this month. The move will enable DLA Piper to focus on providing a full range of legal services from its Amsterdam office in order to support the needs of local and international clients. DLA Piper's Amsterdam office has specialist lawyers who advise on an extensive range of matters including: finance and projects; regulatory and government affairs; real estate; litigation and arbitration; employment; pensions and benefits; tax; technology, media and commercial; corporate; and restructuring. It will also continue to provide advice on international trade and insurance matters.

Frans Stibbe, Managing Partner of DLA Piper in the Netherlands said: "Over the years, our two Dutch offices have developed differently. As a result of its position in one of the world's largest ports, the Rotterdam office provides a niche offering focused on all aspects of international trade, transport and insurance law. Our Amsterdam office has developed full-service capabilities and provides legal advice in many areas of the law in line with other DLA Piper offices. The specialised nature of the Rotterdam office means that it clearly plays a different role and this separation will enable the office to pursue this focused approach more effectively as an independent law firm.

Kaye Scholer Patent Litigation Jury Trials Ranked In Both Top 100 Verdicts And Top 10 Defense Wins For 2006
Two of Kaye Scholer's 2006 patent infringement jury trials are listed in the VerdictSearch Top 100 of 2006. The book, published by American Lawyer Media, compiles the top 100 verdicts and the top ten defense verdicts of the year from every federal and state jury trial in America. Kaye Scholer appears both in the top 100 verdicts and the top 10 defense verdicts for 2006.

A jury in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts awarded Kaye Scholer client ARIAD $65.2 million in damages in May 2006, in ARIAD Pharmaceuticals Inc. v. Eli Lilly and Co. The jury found that the patent-in-suit was valid and infringed by Lilly's osteoporosis drug, Evista®, and septic shock drug, Xigris®. This case resulted in the 12th largest federal court jury verdict in 2006.

Kaye Scholer also achieved one of the top 10 defense wins of 2006 in Barry Fiala, Inc. v. Stored Value Systems, Inc. (today known as Comdata Stored Value Solutions) in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. The jury found for Stored Value Systems with a verdict of non-infringement, invalidity, and inequitable conduct, and as a result, shielded the gift card systems of over 300 retailers at the start of the busy holiday gift purchasing season. This case is the only intellectual property defense case among the top 10 defense jury verdicts of 2006.
