MARK HODGSON TO JOIN HOWREY
"Howrey LLP has announced that Mark Hodgson, one of the UK’s leading life sciences lawyers, will join the firm’s London office effective April 30. He joins from Taylor Wessing, where he was part of the Life Sciences and Healthcare Practice.

In making the announcement, Robert F. Ruyak, Chairman and CEO of Howrey said, “Mark Hodgson is a leading UK IP lawyer. His recruitment will further strengthen our already strong IP team in Europe. He will play an important role on that team and we welcome him to Howrey.”

Taylor Wessing’s head of IP Charles Lloyd said: “Mark’s decision to move follows a conflict of interest between a number of important clients that Taylor Wessing represents and an important client he has advised for many years. Mark wishes to continue working with this client, and we respect his career choice. We thank him for his contribution to Taylor Wessing and wish him all the very best in his new role.”

Mark Hodgson specialises in advising pharmaceutical, medical device and biotechnology companies on intellectual property, regulatory, product liability and parallel importation matters. He has represented his clients successfully before the UK courts and the ECJ and has experience in all forms of licensing, including compulsory licensing and in advising clients on the intellectual property aspects of acquisitions.

European Managing Partner Willem Hoyng said “Mark’s skills are a perfect match with Howrey’s. We welcome him to our European team of Jeremy Brown, Richard Willoughby, David Stone and James Irvine in London; Bart Van Den Broek in Amsterdam; Marina Cousté in Paris; Joachim Feldges and Marc Groebl in Munich; and Carl De Meyer and Benoit Strowel in Brussels. We are well positioned to serve our clients both in Europe and, transatlantically, together with our colleagues in the US.”

Howrey opened its London office in 2001. It has grown from 2 partners to more than 27 lawyers advising in all areas of IP as well as complex business litigation.

The office, which is currently located in Tudor Street, is due to move to New Street Square in Fetter Lane in 2008."

Arent Fox Team Achieves Total Victory on Behalf of the Potomac Group
"Arent Fox LLP announced today that, after two months of trial but less than five hours of deliberation, a jury returned a unanimous verdict on all counts on behalf of its client, the Potomac Group.

Moreover, the Potomac Group was awarded the full damages that it sought on its counterclaims against the plaintiffs, and the court barred the plaintiffs from using the “ Potomac” name in connection with their business.

Mike Stevens, co-manager of the firm’s litigation department, said, “Despite the demanding hours, some challenging rulings by the court and the rather complicated nature of the evidence, the Arent Fox team presented a masterful and motivating argument that clearly convinced the eight-person jury.”

The case started in September 2002 when the plaintiffs – Potomac Group West, Inc., and Steven Leisher – filed a lawsuit accusing the Potomac Group and other defendants of fraud and breach of contract relating to the payment of commissions on life insurance policies placed through the Potomac Group, a life insurance general agent owned by the BISYS Group, Inc.

Plaintiffs asked the jury to award damages in the amount of $15 million against the Potomac Group. The Potomac Group counterclaimed for damages and to bar plaintiffs from using the Potomac name in the future. As noted above, the Potomac Group fully prevailed on the claims it made to the jury.

The Arent Fox trial team included Jay Hulme, Sam Charnoff, Joe Price, Jack Hitt, Lauren Berlacher, Jessica Smoluchowski and Josh Fowkes."
