Jim Goheen Honored for Dedication to Education
Over the course of his career, the late Jim Goheen was recognized and well-respected for his dedication to education. Renowned for his specialty in school law, his representation of the Kansas City, Kansas public school system in the desegregation process with the Justice Department spanned much of his career and earned him the respect and admiration of all involved.

Both Judge O’Connor and the Justice Department counsel, who traveled from Washington, D.C., for the hearing expressed their admiration and respect for Jim as a scholar, lawyer and person.

Mr. Goheen worked with many other school districts and educational institutions over his career. He will be honored on November 4, 2006, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College, where he will be inducted into the Mid-America Education Hall of Fame, along with Barbara Carswell, Patricia Gaunce, Dr. Debra Peppers, Clay “Bud” Roberts Jr., and the Sprint Foundation.

Frost Brown Todd to Receive Honor from Humane Society of the United States
Frost Brown Todd is pleased to announce that it has been selected to receive one of four pro bono awards from The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) at its annual awards banquet in New York on April 19th.

On behalf of the HSUS, Frost Brown Todd attorneys advocated over the past year for the enforcement of an emergency regulation adopted to prohibit the canned hunting of exotic animals in Indiana. The regulation, currently threatened by impending litigation, is being closely monitored by attorneys Billy Mabry and Gene Price while they continue to advocate for animal rights and the interests of HSUS with state authorities.

The types of exotic animals killed in this type of “hunting” include zebras, Corsican rams, blackbuck antelope, and water buffalo. The HSUS estimates that there are more than 1,000 hunting ranches scattered across more than 25 states, offering "no kill, no pay" opportunities to kill confined animals.

“I got involved in the HSUS because of my compassion for all wildlife,” said FBT Attorney Billy Mabry. “Although I am not a hunter, I am a native of rural Kentucky and respect those that do hunt. I do not however, view shooting at animals that are essentially caged very sporting.”

Fellow attorney, Gene Price, echoes those sentiments, “The Humane Society of the United States takes special concern for all animals, and as a bird hunter and fisherman I share their abiding respect for wildlife and their humane treatment. The devotion repeatedly demonstrated by HSUS representatives to ensuring that animals are not abused or subjected to less than a “fair chase” in their opposition to fenced hunting establishments is indicative of that concern. It has been an honor to work with such caring people,” he said.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization with 9.5 million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals and equine protection, disaster preparedness and response, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research and farm animal welfare. The HSUS protects all animals through education, investigation, litigation, legislation, advocacy, and field work.
