Law Firm Adds Engineer to IP Group
She is an engineer who drives race cars and collects antique vehicles. But, Debra Fickler’s first passion is law. Shughart Thomson & Kilroy, P.C. recently hired Fickler as part of its Intellectual Property Group, an area of law so specialized only 2% of attorneys practice in that area. Fickler, who has a bachelor’s degree in physics, brings an enormous amount of expertise to the firm.

“I worked for McDonnell Douglas for ten years where I was involved in developing inspection procedures for the Harrier jump jet. That is the jet that hovers. I was intricately involved in developing in-house methods for ensuring quality and in-service techniques for survivability,” said Fickler.

Fickler earned her J.D. from the University of Montana but finished her last year of law school at St. Louis University while working full-time. She worked as an engineer for 10 years before entering the field of law. She used her highly specialized knowledge of physics to work for a law firm in Chicago prior to landing in Kansas City.

“I went to law school to get into international marketing. I wanted to sell airplanes. While in law school I was selected to compete in a mock trial in the American Trial Lawyers Association Student Advocacy Competition. I was co-counsel and we won the western division and the national competition. That steered me into becoming a trial attorney where I do IP litigation and patent prosecution,” said Fickler.

When Fickler isn’t practicing law she races and collects cars. Fickler has driven 170 miles per hour but toned down her racing speeds after her daughter was born. She and her husband have several vintage cars including a 1938 Chevy Master, better known as the “Bonnie and Clyde” car, a Vespa scooter, like the one seen in the movie “Roman Holiday,” and a 1985 El Camino that she prepped and painted herself. Fickler says she got her love of cars from her father who worked for GM. “We even named our daughter Carrera which means “to race” in Italian,” she laughed.

Fulbright Strengthens Energy Projects Team With London Addition
Fulbright has taken another step in expanding and strengthening its noted global energy projects practice with the addition of Jeremy Sheldon, who is recognized for his international work in power generation, distribution, infrastructure and waste-to-energy projects.

Sheldon is joining Fulbright’s London office as a partner from Ashurst.

“For more than half a century, Fulbright’s attorneys have assisted the energy industry as it has expanded into emerging markets and as energy projects worldwide have come online,” said Steven B. Pfeiffer, chair of Fulbright’s Executive Committee. “Our experienced energy lawyers assist clients across the globe. Jeremy’s strong projects experience complements a strong lineup of energy practitioners at Fulbright.”

Sheldon brings experience providing legal counsel for a $100 million project to construct, finance and operate one of the largest waste-to-energy and recycling projects of its kind in the United Kingdom, the financing of a thermal independent power project in India and the formation of two joint ventures in the petrochemical sector with assets in Italy, Germany and Canada.

Sheldon has advised energy companies in regions ranging from Africa to the Middle East and countries from Canada to Kazakhstan on issues from waste projects to infrastructure development.

“Jeremy has a very diverse set of skills that span from extensive upstream to downstream experience,” said Michael Irvin, the head of Fulbright’s Energy Department. “He is an impressive global energy projects player who will benefit our team of experienced international energy practitioners. Fulbright is a serious competitor for any energy project, anywhere in the world.”

“Fulbright has a distinct and impressive energy practice that includes a cadre of attorneys who strive to obtain the very best results for the firm’s clients and the industry as a whole,” Sheldon said. “The same high standards that guide me as a lawyer are evident in Fulbright’s culture and client service. With Fulbright’s London office as a base, Sheldon will serve clients across the globe. He brings a notable mix of experience as Fulbright continues expanding internationally, the head of Fulbright’s London office, Lista Cannon, said.

“London is a key center for energy infrastructure finance and a hub of our international energy projects work,” Cannon said. “Jeremy’s strengths in energy from oil and gas to projects work in electricity and waste solutions will serve our clients well. Our London practice continues to grow and we are eager to welcome experienced, diverse energy practitioners, such as Jeremy, who also serves to enhance our firm’s thriving worldwide disputes practice.
