Latin Lawyer Picks Hunton & Williams For 2006 M&A Deal of the Year
" In 2006, two Hunton & Williams attorneys closed one of the largest tender offers in the history of Panama and Central America and one of the largest bank acquisitions in Latin America. For their success, Latin Lawyer has recognized Hunton & Williams Partners Carlos Loumiet and Fernando Margarit for closing the top M&A deal in 2006.

Loumiet and Margarit represented Central America’s largest financial group, Grupo Banistmo, S.A. in a $1.77 billion sale to HSBC Holdings acquiring more than 220 branches in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Colombia, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

“Both Carlos and Fernando worked tirelessly on this deal and it is an honor to have them recognized for their hard work,” said Marty Steinberg, Managing Partner for the Miami office of Hunton & Williams. “This deal was paramount in Latin America.”

Loumiet and Margarit were also recognized by the Miami Daily Business Review for being Top Dealmakers in International Corporate and as the Most Effective Lawyers in International Corporate for 2006.

Banistmo was Central America’s largest financial services group and HSBC is the world’s third-largest bank. Associates Fradyn Suarez and Uriel Mendieta also assisted on the purchase.

“While we are certainly very honored, all the credit has to be shared with the terrific team of executives and attorneys from Banistmo, HSBC, Cleary Gottlieb, Aleman Cordero Galindo & Lee, and Morgan y Morgan, who made this transaction a pleasure to work on,” said Carlos Loumiet.

Carlos Loumiet has advised clients in the international business and banking fields in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America for almost 30 years. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and is a member of the Florida and New York State Bars.
