Hunton & Williams Adds Charles Elphicke as Tax Partner in London
"Hunton & Williams today announced that Charles Elphicke has joined the firm as a partner and head of its tax practice in Europe, from Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw. His practice focuses on international tax structuring, mergers and acquisitions, and inward investment transactions undertaken by US businesses into the United Kingdom.

The London office of Hunton & Williams opened its doors in 1999 and offers a range of legal services under both English and US law. Its lawyers practice as a global group and often form integrated teams with colleagues in other offices. "

Jerome J. Shestack To Receive PCA’s Lawton “Quality of Life” Award
WolfBlock attorney Jerome J. Shestack and his wife, Marciarose, will receive Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s M. Powell Lawton Quality of Life Award at a dinner in their honor on April 11.

Jerome J. Shestack, a nationally renowned trial lawyer and international activist for human rights, and his wife Marciarose Shestack, a pioneering broadcast journalist, are being recognized for their lifetimes of pioneering professional achievement and their personal commitment to the public good.

“Marciarose and Jerome J. Shestack exemplify the dedication to professional excellence and lifelong commitment to public engagement that has helped improve the quality of life for thousands of others,” said Rodney D. Williams, PCA president. “Their good work continues to this day, and we are proud to honor them for their many achievements.”

The 2007 M. Powell Lawton award will be presented during PCA’s annual Lawton Dinner, to be held at Loews Hotel in Center City. Hilb Rogal & Hobbs is the presenting sponsor for the event. The dinner follows PCA’s day-long M. Powell Lawton Conference on Urban Aging, whose theme this year is “Making Philadelphia Neighborhoods Senior-Friendly.”

Past Lawton Award honorees include former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, broadcast journalist Hugh Downs, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania Harris Wofford, and medical sociologist Dr. Renee Fox.

Jerome J. Shestack

Jerome J. Shestack is a former president of the American Bar Association (1997-98). He is a nationally renowned trial lawyer and a world leader in the international human rights movement who exemplifies a lifelong commitment to professional and civic excellence and engagement.

Previously cited by the National Law Journal as one of the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in the United States,” he co-chaired the Litigation Department of Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen, LLP for many years, where he handled complex litigation for major media and other corporations. Having retired at 15 years past the firm’s traditional retirement age, he is currently of counsel to the firm and heads the American Bar Association’s Human Rights Center, which he founded.

Mr. Shestack has served on the ABA’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, which makes recommendations to the President and United States Senate on the qualification of all prospective federal judges. He also charted the ABA's Section of Individual Rights and the first ABA Commission on the Mentally Disabled. He previously chaired the ABA’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid and was a founder of the ABA’s Pro Bono Center. He also was a founder of The Lawyers’ Committee of Civil Rights and of PILCOP, a Philadelphia public interest law program.

Known for his longstanding advocacy for human rights, Mr. Shestack served as president of the International League for Human Rights for 20 years and was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights under President Jimmy Carter. He chaired the International Bar Association Standing Committee on Human Rights, served as general counsel of Amnesty International in the U.S., was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists and is counselor to the American Society of International Law.

Active as a community leader, he has served as chair of the University of Pennsylvania Press, as president of the Jewish Publication Society of America and on the boards of Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University. He is a lifetime trustee of the Free Library of Philadelphia, a director of the American Poetry Review and former chair of the American Poetry Center.

Mr. Shestack graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received his L.L.B. from Harvard Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law School Record. He has taught at Northwestern Law School and at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, which awarded him an honorary fellowship. An honorary fellow of Columbia Law School, he has written more than 100 articles for law journals and newspaper editorial pages.

Marciarose Shestack

Marciarose Shestack is one of America’s most distinguished broadcast journalists and a trailblazer for women in the field. She is also distinguished for her many civic achievements.

Named the outstanding woman broadcaster in the United States in 1971 by McCall’s magazine, Ms. Shestack began her career at CBS-3 TV (formerly WRCV-TV and later KYW-TV) in 1958 as producer and narrator of a documentary series called “Concept.” She later became the first woman in the country to anchor the prime-time news in a major market, while at KYW-TV (frequently topping Walter Cronkite in the ratings). She also hosted the daily “Marciarose” talk show, and served as the station’s film and theater critic and cultural affairs editor. Soon after President Nixon opened U.S. relations with The People’s Republic of China, she was one of 14 American professional women selected to visit that country.

Ms. Shestack joined NBC’s flagship station in New York, WNBC-TV, in 1975 to anchor her own 90-minute talk show, “Sunday.” As anchor, she interviewed many notable personalities in politics and the arts from President Jimmy Cater to artist Louise Nevleson. She also appeared on the station’s evening news program, “NewsCenter 4.” In addition, she took on the role of print journalist in the 1970s with her Philadelphia Inquirer column, “Marciarose,” which focused on personalities in the news.

During the 1980s, she hosted and co-hosted a number of PBS network programs, including “An Analysis of President Reagan’s Economic Policies,” and “An Examination of World-Wide Terrorism.” Ms. Shestack continues to be a frequent lecturer and moderator and is the subject of a chapter in the book Indelible Images: Women of Local Television, published recently by Iowa State University Press. She was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2004.

Her civic contributions are numerous and wide-ranging. Among them, she serves as a board member of the Mann Center for the Performing Arts and as a member of the Marian Anderson Award Committee. She previously served as president of the Philadelphia Developers Alliance, which promotes Philadelphia and encourages businesses to locate in the city; as co-chair of the William Penn Restoration Committee to restore and preserve Philadelphia’s most famous statue; and as the Mayor’s representative to the WHYY-TV board. She also served for an unprecedented 15 terms as the only non-architect on the board of the Philadelphia Institute of Architects.

Currently, Ms. Shestack’s most passionate commitment is to the organization Cure Autism Now, which was founded by her son, Jonathan, and daughter-in-law Portia Iversen, to raise funds for medical research to find a cure for autism.

Ms. Shestack holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Theater from Northwestern University, a master’s degree in Communications and Theater from Louisiana State University, and was a Fels Scholar and University Scholar in the doctoral program in political science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Jacques Bourgeois Becomes Legal Consultant to WilmerHale
WilmerHale is pleased to announce that Jacques Bourgeois, a leading authority on European Competition, Trade and EU Administrative law, will serve as legal consultant to the firm and its clients in the Brussels office.

Mr. Bourgeois' experience complements and reinforces the expertise of WilmerHale's distinguished team of Antitrust and Trade lawyers in Brussels and will further strengthen the firm’s international practices, working closely with lawyers in the US, UK, Germany and China to support the firm’s multinational client base.

Prior to his entry into private practice in 1991, Mr. Bourgeois was a senior official in the European Commission. From 1987 to 1991, he was principal legal adviser of the Commission, where he was in charge of foreign trade policy and, later, antitrust policy. He has extensive experience within the Legal Service of the Commission and was responsible successively for questions pertaining to a broad range of areas including institutional issues, external relations, and agriculture and fisheries policy. From 1983 to 1987, Mr. Bourgeois was head of the Trade Policy Instruments Division in the Directorate General for External Relations and was responsible for the implementation of the EU's regulations on antidumping and subsidies, as well as for safeguard measures and protection against illicit commercial practices.

WilmerHale has a long history of attracting prominent government officials who bring unique insight into the regulatory process. Mr. Bourgeois joins a list of respected former public officials who have affiliated themselves with the firm including, in Brussels, Claus-Dieter Ehlermann (formerly Chairman of the Appellate Body of the WTO and Director-General of the Directorate-General for Competition) and, in Berlin, Matthias Wissmann (former Minister of Transport in Germany).

Antitrust and Competition Department Chair, William J. Kolasky, said: "We are delighted to have the benefit of Jacques' experience. He has had a distinguished career of both public service and private practice, and our clients will benefit enormously from his insight, judgment, and keen advocacy skills."

Mr. Bourgeois obtained his doctorate of law in 1959 from the University of Ghent. He studied economics at the University of Louvain in Belgium and participated in the MCL program of the University of Michigan Law School from 1959 to 1960. He is a professor of the College of Europe (Bruges) and was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Law School in 1976. He was nominated to the Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Bonn during the 1992-1993 academic year.

Mr. Bourgeois speaks Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish and Italian.

Bridgepoint in £360 Million LBO of Fat Face
White & Case advised BNP Paribas in its role of debt underwriter to UK-based private equity group Bridgepoint's £360 million acquisition of Fat Face, a leading active lifestyle brand in the UK, from Advent International.

"The UK leveraged buyout market remains strong, and although a turn in the credit cycle is expected at some point in the next 12 months, we are continuing to see high levels of investor confidence," commented Kate Allchurch, lead White & Case partner advising on the deal.

The White & Case team advising on the deal was lead by partner Kate Allchurch, working closely with associates Leora Siretz, Mayank Gupta and trainee solicitor Adnan Chida.

Last year the Firm's Leveraged Finance team in London took the lead role on a series of high-profile leveraged finance deals valued at €86 billion, with the first two mandates of 2006 alone worth some €37 billion. Particularly noteworthy transactions included: the €10.8 billion financing for the cash portion of Mittal Steel N.V.'s €25.8 billion bid to acquire French rival Arcelor SA; the £8.2 billion plus €2 billion financing for the all-cash takeover of FTSE 100 company, BOC Group plc, by the German-based industrial giant Linde AG; the financing for SoftBank Corp. in its acquisition of a 97.68 percent stake in Vodafone KK for a consideration of $16 billion; and the €2.6 billion senior asset financing loan and €550 million high yield offering in connection with Europcar Groupe SA and Eurazeo's acquisition of Europcar Group.

President of National Association of Women Lawyers Joins Nixon Peabody; Cathy Fleming Brings 28 Years of Legal Experience in Civil Litigation and White Collar Crime
Cathy Fleming is nationally known for her practice in complex civil and corporate integrity matters. Ms. Fleming joins Nixon Peabody’s Business Litigation practice from the New York City office of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge. As the current president of NAWL, she leads the oldest continuing women’s bar association in the United States. The association is nationally renowned for its long-standing record of achievement on issues that affect the interests of women in and under the law. Ms. Fleming is an active spokesperson on the social, political, and professional empowerment of women, including on issues of retention and advancement of women lawyers.

Ms. Fleming’s practice focuses on complex civil litigation and white collar integrity matters. She has extensive experience in trials and counseling individuals and corporations on matters involving money laundering, international extraditions, securities, employment, antitrust, and environmental law. Ms. Fleming has tried more than fifty cases to resolution, primarily in federal courts, in numerous jurisdictions across the country. She has been lead counsel on high-profile cases, including successfully defending the former Mexican deputy attorney general in four separate federal extradition attempts and successfully defending the former mayor of Newark against federal criminal charges. Ms. Fleming has also appeared as a commentator for Court TV and other media outlets. In 1987, she received the Department of Justice’s prestigious Special Commendation Award. Ms. Fleming was graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a B.A. and earned her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law.
