Williams Kastner Obtains Dismissal of Class Action Suit Against Northern Life Insurance Company
Williams Kastner has handled a number of class action suits over the years. Seattle member Jeff Johnson and his team recently obtained a significant, total dismissal of the Curtis v. Northern Life Insurance Company class action suit that was filed over 51/2 years ago. Williams Kastner worked effectively in defense of the case with lead counsel from the Stites & Harbison law firm, based in Louisville, Kentucky. Members Joe Hamilton, Marjorie Farris, and Clark Johnson led the team at Stites & Harbison.

Several years ago, the defense team defeated plaintiff’s attempt to obtain nationwide class certification, but the court did certify an 18,000 person statewide class. After hearing three hours of argument, during which plaintiff’s counsel claimed that damages exceeded a billion dollars (disputed by Johnson who asserted that no one was harmed), Judge Charles Mertel, of King County Superior Court, determined the case was without merit and dismissed all claims of the class.

Johnson’s team consisted of Seattle attorneys Margaret Sundberg, Mary Spillane, Dan Ferm and Jerry Edmonds. Staff members included Jan Keira Knox, James Swift, Carrie Custer, Jeremy Myrick, Nikki Woodhouse, Tom Ross, Abella Placencia, Darryll Broadbrooks, Maria Kjeldtoft, Michele Barger and Phyllis Degrate.

WFW’s Martin Watson is the first practising solicitor to be elected Vice President of the Chamber of Shipping
Martin Watson, one of the founding partners of Watson, Farley & Williams (WFW), has been elected Vice President of the Chamber of Shipping. This is the first time an individual who is not from a shipping company has been elected to the post in the organisation's 125 year history. It comes at an important time for the Chamber and reflects the work which Martin has undertaken in lobbying for the tonnage tax regime, UK flag expansion and new Chamber members from overseas.

WFW celebrates its 25th anniversary in May 2007 which has seen the firm grow into one of the premier specialist maritime finance firms in London. Martin has played a leading role in the development of WFW which grew from its London HQ to be a truly international venture, with offices in many of the world’s leading maritime centres.

Chamber president David Dingle said: “The choice of Martin as my vice-president, aside from his obvious skill as spokesperson for the industry, is clear recognition of the size and nature of the footprint of shipping business within the commercial maritime community and within the maritime cluster as a whole - and of the interdependence of shipping and shipping services.”

With many challenges ahead for UK shipping Martin is looking forward to “focusing attention on just how vital the maritime sector remains to the UK national interest and ensuring its proper representation in an increasingly challenging environment.
