Gray Plant Mooty Names First Female Managing Officer
The Minneapolis-based law firm of Gray Plant Mooty named Tamara Hjelle Olsen as its Managing Officer—the first woman to hold that position in the firm’s 140-year history. Olsen takes the helm from Bruce Mooty, who served as GPM’s Managing Officer from 2000-2007. “Tamara joined GPM 20 years ago, straight out of Harvard Law School,” says Mooty. “Her longstanding loyalty to and support of this firm—as well as the depth and breadth of her legal expertise—perfectly position her to successfully lead GPM to an even higher level of excellence.”

Olsen is a principal in the area of employment law and is Co-Chair of the firm's Higher Education Practice Team. She is a 1982 summa cum laude graduate of Moorhead State University and earned her law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School where she served as Executive Editor of the Harvard Women’s Law Journal. Olsen is consistently named a Minnesota Law & Politics "Super Lawyer" and, in 2006, was honored as a “Top 100 Female Super Lawyer.”

A member of Minnesota Women Lawyers and past member of the Minnesota State Bar Association Committee on Women in the Legal Professions, Olsen has also taught “Women and the Law” at the University of Minnesota. She serves on the Board of Directors for Dunwoody College of Technology and is a member of its Personnel Committee.

Olsen has distinguished herself both inside and outside the firm as an outstanding lawyer and trusted advocate for her clients. Her openness, approachability, and ability to see the big picture have helped her build the goodwill, respect and trust critical to leading GPM’s more than 160 lawyers and 325 total employees. Olsen has welcomed new challenges throughout her practice. As a junior lawyer, she chaired a gender taskforce researching equality issues, which resulted in the formation of a formal mentoring program at the firm and, as Chair of the Attorney Personnel Committee, she led the development of GPM’s first formal review process for lawyers. Olsen currently serves on the firm’s Board of Directors and held a key role in the development of its new Strategic Plan.

“We’re so proud of GPM’s 140 years of service to businesses in our region, national franchisors, and our community,” says Olsen. “The depth of experience of the lawyers who came before us, and the talent and creativity of our lawyers today position our firm for a bright future, and our clients to receive the best possible legal services. I’m honored to lead this firm and look forward to working with the lawyers and staff in our Minnesota and Washington, D.C. offices.”

William H. Taft IV Appointed by Stanford Law School to the Warren Christopher Professorship of the Practice of International Law and Diplomacy
Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP announced today that Washington Of Counsel William H. Taft IV has been appointed by Stanford Law School to the Warren Christopher Professorship of the Practice of International Law and Diplomacy. He will join Stanford Law School this fall and remain in residence during the 2007-2008 school year, teaching Contemporary Issues in International Law and Diplomacy and Foreign Relations Law. He will also join the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford as a visiting scholar.

Mr. Taft succeeds Allen Weiner, who has been the inaugural Warren Christopher Professor of the Practice of International Law and Diplomacy since 2003, and who will remain at Stanford Law School as a senior lecturer in international law.

The Warren Christopher Professorship of the Practice of International Law and Diplomacy was established to honor Warren Christopher, former Secretary of State of the United States and alumnus of Stanford Law School. It is a joint appointment between Stanford Law School and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), Stanford University's primary forum for interdisciplinary research on key international issues and challenges. The joint position reflects the multifaceted nature of one of the nation’s most influential statesmen: Warren Christopher is considered by many to be the consummate lawyer-statesman who bridges the gap between public and private, national and international. Among his many accomplishments, his negotiations played a key role in the release of American hostages in Iran; he chaired the commission which investigated the Rodney King assault and subsequent riots in Los Angeles; he served on the California Hate Crimes Task Force; and today he continues as a senior partner at O’Melveny & Myers law firm.

“The Warren Christopher endowed professorship was designed to pay tribute to a great statesman and to provide a valuable, lasting resource to support the study and teaching of international issues that shape the future of our world,” said Stanford Law School Dean Larry Kramer. “Given William Taft’s substantial experience in international diplomacy, he is eminently qualified for this chair and we are very fortunate to be able to offer his experience to our students.”

The Executive Director of the D.C. Access to Justice Commission, Sunil Mansukhani, will be the featured speaker for the D.C. Minority Attorney Networking Series. The event will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The ongoing series is co-organized by Arnold & Porter LLP and Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson, LLP. The event is additionally sponsored by more than 35 law firms in the Washington, D.C. area.

Mr. Mansukhani is the Executive Director of the D.C. Access to Justice Commission, which was created by the D.C. Court of Appeals in 2005 to improve legal services for low-income residents. The Commissioners include D.C. Court of Appeals and Superior Court judges, past presidents of the D.C. Bar, executive directors of leading legal services providers, and other community leaders. Mr. Mansukhani was previously in the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice (DOJ); served as a clinical teaching fellow at Georgetown; and was a clerk to Chief Judge Edward Cahn (E.D., Pa.). At DOJ, he was the lead attorney on a ground-breaking case in which DOJ sued New York City for not addressing the harassment of Asian students at a public school. Mr. Mansukhani received his J.D. from Yale Law School. He was named one of the “Best Lawyers Under 40” by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association in 2006.

The concept for the D.C. Minority Attorney Networking Series was generated by Fried Frank’s Attorney of Color Affinity Group. Arnold & Porter and Fried Frank teamed together to co-organize the series, which is intended to provide opportunities for minority attorneys in the D.C. metropolitan area to network and build alliances, while also encouraging professional development. Since the launch of the series in March of 2005, over 1000 attorneys have attended the series.
