Patrick Boyle of FMC’s Tax Group appointed Judge of Tax Court of Canada
Patrick Boyle of FMC’s Tax Group has been appointed as a Justice of the Tax Court of Canada, effective immediately.

Patrick is recognized as a leading tax practitioner and dispute resolution counsel. With his colleagues Bill Innes and Joel Nitikman, he is the author of The Essential GAAR Manual: Policies, Principles and Procedures, published by CCH Canadian in 2006. He also coauthored with Bill Innes Charities, Non-Profits and Philanthropy under the Income Tax Act, published by CCH Canadian in 2006. Patrick served as Special Advisor to the Tax Policy Branch of the Department of Finance in Ottawa in 2000-2002. In 2001, he became the first private sector member appointed to CRA’s GAAR Committee and was appointed as a member of CRA’s Third Party Penalty Review Committee and its Transfer Pricing Review Committee.

Eckert Seamans Adds Attorney in Pittsburgh Office.
The national law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC today announced that attorney Brandon D. Richards has joined the firm as an associate. Prior to joining Eckert Seamans, Mr. Richards was an associate with the law firm of Fox Rothschild in Pittsburgh.

As an associate in the firm’s Business Division, Brandon focuses his practice on employee benefits. He designs, drafts and handles compliance matters for a wide variety qualified and non-qualified retirement plans, welfare plans, and education assistance plans. He received his law degree, cum laude, from the Widener University School of Law and he received an LL.M. in Taxation with an Employee Benefits Certificate from the Georgetown University Law Center. He received his undergraduate degree from Widener University. Mr. Richards is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He resides in Seven Fields, Pennsylvania.

Baker Donelson Attorney Named Among Franchise Times Legal Eagles
Nashville attorney Joel R. Buckberg, head of the franchise and hospitality practice groups of the law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC, has been named a Legal Eagle by Franchise Times, a national publication for franchisors and multi-unit franchisees. An annual listing that recognizes franchise law attorneys on the basis of input from their peers and clients, the Legal Eagles list for 2007 includes 125 franchise attorneys from across the country.

Mr. Buckberg counsels clients on corporate and asset transactions and operations, particularly in hospitality, franchising and distribution, including strategic planning and transactions, financing, mergers and acquisitions, system policy and practice development, regulatory compliance and contract system drafting. He previously served as executive vice president and deputy general counsel of Cendant Corp., where he was involved in acquisitions, international master license transactions and the supervision of legal practice groups.

Active in the International Franchise Association (IFA), Mr. Buckberg was recently named administrator for the IFA's Franchise Compliance Training Program, an educational program designed to aid companies in meeting the requirements of federal and state franchise sales and disclosure regulations. He will be offering the training as part of IFA Legal Roundtable events in five locations around the country in 2007. He will also be speaking at the IFA's Legal Symposium on May 7 in Washington, D.C. on a panel discussing the changes in the rules governing franchisor disclosure documents and procedures recently announced by the Federal Trade Commission. Additionally, Mr. Buckberg is the host/organizer for the Nashville chapter of the IFA's Franchise Business Network.

James Parsons to Participate In Leadership Kentucky Class
James E. Parsons, Of Counsel of the Northern Kentucky office of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP, has been accepted to participate in the next Leadership Kentucky Class, a state-wide leadership program. Participants are selected on their proven and potential leadership abilities, civic activity, concern for community, volunteer leadership and potential to help build a greater Kentucky.

Parsons, a resident of Newport, is a member of the firm’s Public Law and Public Finance Practice Groups, as well as a registered lobbyist with the firm’s affiliate, Focused Capital Solutions. He previously served as Administrator and Deputy Judge Executive of Boone County, and as Assistant City Solicitor, City Solicitor and City Manager for the City of Newport, where he was involved in developments such as Newport on the Levee and the Newport Aquarium.

Parsons received his J.D. from Salmon P. Chase College of Law of Northern Kentucky University, where he also obtained his B.A. and graduated cum laude. Parsons previously served as an adjunct instructor in the Public Administration Department at NKU, teaching Executive Management and Urban Administration. Parson serves on the Executive Committee for the Brighton Center; serves as board chairman for the Newport Housing Development Corporation; and serves as a board member for OKI.

Terrance Ashanta-Barker Dedicates Time and Talents to Young Bankers Program
Terrance Ashanta-Barker, an attorney at Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP in the Business & Finance Department, volunteers as an organizer and participant in the Young Bankers Program (“YBP”) at Taft Elementary School. Sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cincinnati and Taft Elementary, YBP’s 11-week program is designed to educate fifth graders about banking and financial literacy and engages students on field trips to the University of Cincinnati and the Fifth Third Check Processing plant. Ashanta-Barker is scheduled to appear on Channel 5’s television program “Issues” to discuss his involvement and the YBP program mid April.

Ashanta-Barker, a resident of Cincinnati , graduated Valedictorian from Robert A. Taft High School. He received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Tuskegee where he served as President of the Tuskegee Chapter of American Society of Chemical Engineers, a Procter and Gamble Scholar, a PepsiCo Scholar, and a member of the Honda Campus All- Star Challenge National Team. He obtained his law degree from the Florida State University (“FSU”) College of Law where he was a Virgil Hawkins Fellowship Recipient, a CLEO Fellowship Recipient, a staff member of the FSU College of Law Appropriations Committee, President of the Entertainment Arts, and Sports Law Society, and a state-approved student lawyer in the FSU Children’s Advocacy Center.

Ashanta-Barker serves as a board member of the Cincinnati Business Incubator and the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation. His is a graduate of Grass Roots Leadership Academy and the United States Presidential Classroom. Ashanta-Barker volunteers for the Special Olympics and other community service initiatives.

Shearman & Sterling Receives Approval to Open Third Office in China
Shearman & Sterling announced today that the People’s Republic of China has granted the firm permission to open an office in Shanghai.

Renovations are currently underway for the new office, which is located near the redeveloped historic district of Xin Tian Di, and are expected to be completed later this spring.

With offices currently in Beijing and Hong Kong, the new office brings the number of locations to three that will now service the firm’s growing business demands in China. Andrew Ruff, who has been managing the firm's temporary office in Shanghai since last October, will be the Chief Representative and Managing Partner of the new office.

Steven Kaufmann Named New Global Chair of Litigation
Morrison & Foerster LLP today announced the selection of Steven M. Kaufmann as global chair of its 490-attorney Litigation Department. As chair, Mr. Kaufmann will provide strategic and operational direction to one of the largest groups of litigation specialists in any law firm and includes some of the top trial and appellate lawyers in the United States. Mr. Kaufmann’s charter is to broaden the Department’s dominant position in substantive and geographic areas that matter most to our clients. His focus will include strengthening the firm’s ability to serve clients in the U.S., Japan, China, and Europe in the areas of commercial disputes, antitrust, intellectual property, class actions, employment, financial services litigation, products liability, securities litigation and enforcement, and white collar defense. Mr. Kaufmann takes over department chair responsibilities from Lori A. Schechter, who will continue her active consumer class action and antitrust practice. Additionally, Wesley E. Overson will assume the role of Head of Litigation in San Francisco.

The firm has added steadily to its roster of senior litigators, including the recent arrivals of: veteran trial attorney Dennis Orr, together with Thomas Mueller, Grant Esposito, and Stefan Engelhardt,in New York; noted white-collar attorneys Adam Hoffinger and Robert Salerno in the firm’s Washington office; former SEC Central Regional Director Randall Fons in Denver; prominent Southern California trial attorneys Jane Barrett and Angela Dotson in Los Angeles; and Roger Fones, former senior Justice Department Antitrust Division attorney, who served as chief of the Transportation, Energy, and Agriculture Section.

Mr. Kaufmann said, “I am fortunate to lead such a dynamic group of lawyers. My predecessor, Lori Schechter, laid an exceptional foundation that allows us to offer clients litigation teams that consistently deliver success in high-stakes, complex cases.”

Mr. Kaufmann is a partner in the firm’s Denver office and brings more than 20 years’ litigation experience and leadership to his new role. His practice focuses on class action defense and general commercial litigation, with particular expertise in consumer class actions, antitrust, securities, and employment litigation and counseling. He has represented companies in a broad range of industries, particularly in the telecommunications, technology, real estate, construction, financial services, and franchising sectors. Mr. Kaufmann’s recent cases include representing The Quizno’s Corporation before the Colorado Court of Appeals to defeat a challenge to a trial court’s approval of a securities class action settlement, and Bank of America before the Federal Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals to successfully reject a judicial challenge to a favorable commercial arbitration decision previously obtained by the firm.

As a leader within the firm, Mr. Kaufmann previously held the positions of Managing Partner of the Denver office for 10 years, Co-Chair of the Consumer Litigation and Class Action Practice Group, and Chair of the E-discovery Task Force.

The firm is also pleased to announce that Wesley E. Overson will head the Litigation Group in San Francisco. In this capacity, Mr. Overson will oversee the function and general management of the office’s 180 litigators. Mr. Overson’s practice focuses on intellectual property disputes and complex civil litigation involving technological, scientific, and medical issues. Most recently, he has successfully tried cases on behalf of biotechnical, medical, and electronics companies.

Mr. Kaufmann received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1984. Before attending law school, Mr. Kaufmann worked for the Washington, D.C., consulting firm of ICF, Inc., where he focused on economic analysis of energy markets and related environmental issues. Following law school, he served as a law clerk to United States District Court Judge John L. Kane, Jr. Mr. Kaufmann served previously as Board Chair of the Colorado Lawyers Committee and the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation and currently serves on the Board of the National Jewish Medical and Research Center.

Mr. Overson received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1991. He also studied at the Freie Universitaet in Berlin, Germany, and is fluent in German.
