Firm Represents Resorts International Holdings in $675 Million Sale of Resorts East Chicago
Ameristar Casinos, Inc. announced that it has entered into a $675 million agreement to acquire Resorts East Chicago from Willkie client Resorts International Holdings, LLC. Located in East Chicago, Indiana, Resorts East Chicago features a 53,000-square-foot casino and premier 291-room hotel. The property generated $325.6 million in gross gaming revenue in 2006. Ameristar Casinos, Inc. is a leading Las Vegas-based gaming and entertainment company. Willkie has significant experience handling major transactions in the gaming industry, including its recent involvement in Fertitta Colony Partners LLC’s pending $8.8 billion acquisition of Station Casinos, Inc. The current deal was handled by partners Thomas Cerabino, Adam Turteltaub, Richard Reinhold and David Rubinsky, and associates Amanada Granacher, Matthew Guercio, Thomas Henry and Andrew Mariniello.

Thompson Hine Partners Win YWCA Women of Professional Excellence Award
Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce that Cleveland-based partners Laura Bancroft Nemer and Laura Hauser have been recognized as YWCA Women of Professional Excellence. This award is presented to women who demonstrate excellence in community contributions as well as their dedication to various organizations. Recipients are recognized for their outstanding leadership qualities along with their career accomplishments and dedication to their community.

SCHIFF HARDIN LLP WELCOMES WILLIAM R. NIFONG AS AN ASSOCIATE IN THE CHICAGO OFFICE
Schiff Hardin LLP has added William R. Nifong as an associate in the Litigation Group of the Chicago office. He joins the firm from O’Melveny & Myers LLP in Washington, D.C., where he was a litigation counsel.

Mr. Nifong focuses his practice in a wide range of litigation. He has substantial class action defense and antitrust defense experience. This includes, for example, successfully representing a major automobile manufacturer in opposing certification of a nationwide class of vehicle owners bringing unfair and deceptive trade practices, unjust enrichment, and similar actions in a Pennsylvania court. Mr. Nifong also obtained the reversal of a Florida court certification of a similar nationwide class.

Mr. Nifong's pro bono work has included federal and state court cases. He jointly drafted an amicus brief on behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation in an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, represented a federal inmate in litigating the Federal Bureau of Investigation's denial of his Freedom of Information Act request, and successfully defended an elderly handicapped woman in a landlord-tenant dispute.

Mr. Nifong received his undergraduate degree (B.A., Classical Studies and Comparative Literature, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, 1989) from Duke University; two graduate degrees (M.A., Classical Studies, 1992) from the University of Michigan and (M.S., Education and Social Policy, 1992) from Northwestern University; and two law degrees (J.D., LL.M., International and Comparative Law, cum laude, 2000) from the Duke University School of Law, where he was Executive Editor of the Duke Law Journal.

John Martin Honored with Mullins Award
Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP has honored Columbia Associate John D. Martin with the Edward W. Mullins, Jr., Business Development Award for his demonstrated marketing efforts.

Mr. Martin was selected for his outstanding client development, cross selling, and community involvement, among other activities. Nationally, he has become a recognized authority in the area of electronic discovery, having launched the Defense Research Institute’s e-Discovery Connection newsletter. Mr. Martin is part of the leadership team for DRI’s Electronic Discovery Committee, and he leverages his experience in electronic discovery across many areas of his practice. He is frequently called on by the Firm’s clients and colleagues to address a wide array of electronic discovery challenges ranging from case-specific issues to the development of information management and electronic discovery practices and procedures for in-house counsel.

“John’s focus on the marketing aspect of his professional development distinguishes him from other associates,” according to his nomination. “He has done an exceptional job enhancing the Firm’s profile nationally, including launching and serving as editor in chief of e-Discovery Connection and as an author and source in a number of electronic discovery publications. His commitment to marketing is a significant accomplishment for both John and the Firm.”

In 2006, Mr. Martin engaged in more than 250 hours of marketing activities. He serves the South Carolina Supreme Court’s Public Access to Court Records Taskforce; the South Carolina Bar Practice and Procedure Committee; and the South Carolina Bar Resolution of Fee Disputes Board. He also has been active with the United Way Capital Campaign working with other local law firms to launch or expand their United Way campaigns.

A member of the Firm’s Litigation Group, he practices general products liability, business, pharmaceutical, and medical device litigation. Mr. Martin’s clients include manufacturers of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, assistive medical devices, farm and industrial equipment, and manufactured housing, among others. Along with other Nelson Mullins attorneys, Mr. Martin serves as national coordinating counsel in pharmaceutical mass tort litigation spanning the United States. He also frequently serves as local counsel for pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers facing litigation in South Carolina. Mr. Martin is a former member of the South Carolina State Elections Commission.
The Mullins Award is named for Edward W. Mullins, Jr., a senior partner with Nelson Mullins who joined the firm in 1959. Mr. Mullins, who served as the Firm’s chairman from 1997-2000, has long set an example with his client development efforts.

Nelson Mullins Honors Matthew Lerner with Associates Award
For outstanding achievement in six categories, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough has honored Atlanta Associate Matthew Lerner with the Renaissance Associate Award. The award is given to an attorney who demonstrates achievement in client service, training, pro bono, marketing, recruiting, and productivity.

Mr. Lerner was cited for his work for clients in litigation, product liability, and commercial cases. He also was commended for his pro bono work, including his representation in a child abduction case for a South African father whose ex-wife took their children to the United States. In the past, he has also participated in the Wills for Heroes program and assisted a mother of two children with family relations and domestic issues.

He has published articles, including one in the inaugural issue of the Defense Research Institute’s Discovery Newsletter, E-Discovery Connection, entitled “Recent Developments in E-Discovery Case Law.”

He serves on the Associates Committee, the Training Subcommittee of the Associates Committee, Steering Committee of the Associates Committee, and is editor of Renaissance Notes, the Firm’s associate newsletter. As part of the Training Subcommittee, he developed a proposed training plan/schedule incorporating practice group training sessions. He has served as a mentor to junior associates and summer associates and has encouraged summer associates to join the Firm.

Mr. Lerner represents medical device and pharmaceutical companies, heavy equipment manufacturers, and truck manufacturers in wrongful death, personal injury, and mass tort litigation in state and federal courts. He also represents companies in commercial disputes.
A member of the American Bar and Atlanta Bar Associations, Mr. Lerner is also a member of the Defense Research Institute (DRI).

In 2001, Mr. Lerner earned a Juris Doctor, with high honors, from the Levin College of Law, University of Florida where he was inducted into The Order of the Coif. During law school, he was a senior editor of the Florida Law Review and received book awards for having the highest grades in Sales (U.C.C.) and Products Liability. Mr. Lerner earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Legal Studies, summa cum laude, from the University of Central Florida in 1998. In 2004, he participated in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s (NITA) two-week intensive trial training program in Louisville, Colorado.

Jennifer Percy Joins Nelson Mullins in Raleigh
An associate with experience in housing issues has joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in its Raleigh office.

Jennifer Percy, a former attorney for the N.C. Housing Finance Agency, will focus her practice on affordable housing and community development as well as real estate. She brings to the Firm experience in affordable housing, real estate development and finance, municipal and administrative law. She also worked as a commercial lending paralegal at Updike, Kelly, & Spellacy, P.C. in Hartford, Conn.

Following law school, Ms. Percy worked as a summer associate for Robinson, Donovan, Madden & Barry, P.C. in Springfield, Mass.

She is admitted to practice in North Carolina and has a Housing Credit Compliance Professional license. She is a member of the North Carolina Young Lawyers Division's Bar Exam Committee and a volunteer tutor for repeat test takers of the North Carolina Bar Exam.

Ms. Percy earned a Juris Doctor in 2002 from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where she received the Excellence for the Future Award in Trial Practice. Ms. Percy was also a Master of Science candidate in Criminal Justice at Westfield State College. In 1992, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts.
