Global Climate Change and U.S. Law
Two of Porter Wright's Environmental attorneys recently contributed to the ABA book Global Climate Change and U.S. Law. According to the ABA website, Global Climate Change and U.S. Law "provides comprehensive coverage of the country's law as it relates to global climate change. After a summary of the factual and scientific background, Part I outlines the international and national legal framework of climate change regulation and associated litigation. Part II describes emerging regional, state and local actions, and includes a 50-state survey. Part III covers issues of concern to corporations, including disclosure, fiduciary duties, insurance, and subsidies. Part IV examines the legal aspects of efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, such as voluntary efforts, emissions trading, and carbon sequestration. Global Climate Change and U.S. Law includes key resource aids, including a glossary of climate related terms, a list of acronyms, extensive endnotes, and a comprehensive index.

HASKELL SLAUGHTER’S WILLIAMS TO SPEAK AT AMERICAN BANKRUPTCY INSTITUTE ANNUAL SPRING MEETING
R. Scott Williams, an attorney with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, LLC, will be a featured speaker at the Annual Spring Meeting of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), to be held April 12 – 15 in Washington. Mr. Williams will serve as a panelist for the plenary session “Selecting and Qualifying an Expert: Not Just Anyone Will Do”. The session, scheduled for Sunday, April 15, concludes the Annual Spring Meeting.

With more than 11,000 members, ABI is the largest multi-disciplinary, non-partisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency. Founded in 1982 to provide Congress and the public with unbiased analysis of bankruptcy issues, ABI is the premier professional organization in the field. Members span the entire spectrum of professionals and include attorneys, accountants, auctioneers, judges, lenders, academics, turnaround specialists, credit professionals and many others.

The Law Offices of Garan Lucow Miller, P.C. announces several new hires to the firm. In the Grand Rapids office are associates Mr. Aaron Belville and Ms. Emily Lee Partridge. Mr. Belville’s areas of practice include litigation, employment law, insurance defense and no-fault. Mr. Belville graduated cum laude from the University of Tennessee College of Law. Prior to joining Garan Lucow Miller, P.C., he worked for Nemeth Burwell P.C. in Detroit, Mich. Ms. Partridge earned her J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law in Toledo, Ohio. Her concentration includes no fault, auto negligence, and personal injury and she was previously an associate attorney with Worsfold Macfarlane McDonald, PLLC in Grand Rapids, Mich.

In the Lansing office, Mr. Rich Riekkola was promoted as an associate from a law clerk. He earned his J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and his concentrations are insurance defense, estate planning, and family law.

Kristi G. Woloszyk is Garan Lucow Miller’s new marketing coordinator working out of the Troy and Detroit offices. She joins the firm from Gannett Directories in Clarkston, Mich.

Chuck Wheeler Quoted in FinancialWeek on Transfer Taxes
Chuck Wheeler was quoted in a FinancialWeek article titled “People Watching: IRS commish serves notice on corporate tax cheats.” In response to a comment by Commissioner Mark Everson that the IRS would likely request work papers under FIN 48, Chuck noted that “the IRS’s ability to request such documents is in doubt,” and the interpretation is being challenged by a lawsuit, and even if the IRS won, “the agency probably won’t start requesting FIN 48 work papers for another two to four years because of a backup in IRS audits.
