Womble Carlyle Receives Triangle United Way Award
The Triangle United Way held its Academy of Caring Annual Awards Celebration on Wednesday, April 4th, at the RBC Center Arena Club in Raleigh, North Carolina. Womble Carlyle was given the Excellence-Leadership Circle Campaign Award and Johnny Loper, member in the Raleigh office, attended to receive the award on the firm's behalf. The Triangle United Way distributed a program at the event and included in it a description of Womble Carlyle's 2006 workplace giving campaign which is reproduced below. Other Excellence-Leadership Circle Campaign Award winners included RTI International and BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina. For more information on the Triangle United Way and its worthwhile endeavors, go here.

Description of Womble Carlyle's 2006 workplace campaign excerpted from Triangle United Way event program:

"Attorneys at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice are committed to the communities in which they practice. This commitment was clearly demonstrated through the organization's successful United Way campaign for 2006.

Womble Carlyle operates from both a downtown Raleigh location as well as in Research Triangle Park. Rather than run one main kickoff event at a central location, Campaign Chair John Turlington orchestrated two similar events, one at each location. The partners, law teams and staff enjoyed the benefits of special events such as an ice cream social, a luncheon and auction. In order to increase employee awareness of issues facing the local community, representatives from a United Way member agency were invited to speak to employees at these events about the work that they do in the community and the importance of Triangle United Way's Community Care Fund.

Womble Carlyle employees responded warmly, demonstrating their leadership in community care through their generosity in workplace giving. Leadership giving at this organization increased by 40 percent from the 2005 to 2006 campaign. Their campaign also saw a 22 percent overall increasing in giving this year. In addition to their personal resources, Womble Carlyle associates were generous with their time. Nearly 90 percent of staff participated in a Day of Caring at this member agency in 2006.

In every way, Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice employees showed themselves as partners and leaders in our community, willing and ready to stand in the gap and to do what matters.

Andrew Chirls Named WolfBlock Hiring Partner
WolfBlock is pleased to announce that Andrew A. Chirls has been named as the firm's Hiring Partner.

"We are delighted to have Andy in this vital role," said WolfBlock Chairman Mark L. Alderman. "Andy's dedication to the practice and profession of law is well-known and regarded in the legal community, and we know the firm will benefit from his focus on helping us realize our hiring goals."

Chirls has been a partner in WolfBlock’s Business Litigation practice group since 1989. He joined the firm in 1982 after serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Stanley Brotman, a U.S. District Judge for the District of New Jersey.

"I am thrilled to be in a position where I assist the firm with recruiting and work with all our practice groups at WolfBlock," Chirls said. "Having spent my legal career at WolfBlock, I am pleased for this opportunity to share with candidates my knowledge about this great firm."

In 2005, Chirls served as Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association. He also served as chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association Board of Governors in 2000 in addition to a three-year elected term on the Board of Governors beginning in 1997. In those roles, he was active in helping develop the domestic partner benefits that have been adopted by many Pennsylvania and New Jersey companies.

"In my activities as Bar leader, I worked to make Philadelphia a city that attracts the best, brightest and most diverse group of lawyers." continued Chirls. "Our Bar led the way in making domestic partner benefits available to all lawyers and was a pioneer in other equal opportunity issues, just as WolfBlock has been a leader and pioneer."

Chirls' practice focuses on complex and major litigation in a range of substantive areas, including product liability and mass torts, eminent domain and land valuation, publishing and communications, employment claims and discrimination claims and general litigation.

Chirls is a member and served as chair of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. He was also on the national board of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund for six years and served for several years on the Philadelphia Bar Association's Investigative Division of the Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention, reviewing and investigating qualifications of prospective judges. Chirls has also served as a board member of BalletX and a member of the board of Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program.

Chirls received his law degree from the University of California (Boalt Hall School of Law) at Berkeley and is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in architecture and environmental design.
