Boston Globe Quotes MBJ Attorney On Workplace Violence Problems
The Boston Globe’s Job Doc column recently quoted MBJ attorney Dan Field in an article addressing a worker’s threats of violence against his co-workers (see the Boston Sunday Globe of 4/8/07). The Globe article responds to an employee’s questions about the propriety of an employer’s response to a troubled worker’s threats to kill other employees. The story also explores employers’ legal responsibilities for curbing workplace violence, and employers’ potential civil and criminal liability when violence occurs at a place of business.

The Globe Job Doc column appears bi-weekly and provides advice concerning workplace matters. The column also answers readers’ questions about the law covering the workplace. Field is frequently quoted in the column as an expert on labor and employment law.

JUDGE SARAH DUNCAN JOINS LOCKE LIDDELL & SAPP’S ACCLAIMED APPELLATE PRACTICE IN AUSTIN
Judge Sarah Duncan, who retired at the end of 2006 after two terms as Justice of the Fourth Court of Appeals in San Antonio, has joined Locke Liddell & Sapp’s Appellate Section and will be based in Austin. At Locke Liddell, she will partner with such seasoned and well-known appellate attorneys as Mike Hatchell, Molly Hatchell, Michael Powell, Cynthia Keely Timms and Charles “R” Skip Watson.

“Judge Duncan is widely viewed as one of the great thinkers in Texas legal circles. We are honored that after a distinguished judicial career she will join our Firm and be a part of an already distinguished Appellate Section,” said Managing Partner Jerry Clements. “She is also a very popular and highly praised speaker on legal and procedural issues, as well as a member of the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee. Judge Duncan will bring us added depth of experience, intellect and analytical skills for complex appeals.”

A graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, where she also received her undergraduate degree, Judge Duncan began her practice with Fulbright & Jaworski and gained valuable experience as a key player in the Texaco/ Pennzoil litigation. Later, she moved to Austin and worked on significant trust and estate litigation which was concluded favorably for her client. Following a return to practice in San Antonio, where she continued to handle significant appeals involving a wide variety of subjects, she ran for and was elected to two six-year terms on the San Antonio Court of Appeals. There, she presided over a docket of civil and criminal appeals from 32 counties. In 1993, she was appointed to serve on the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee, a position she still holds.

At Locke Liddell, Judge Duncan will work as an integral part of the Appellate Section, which includes expanding the Firm’s work with criminal appeals.

“I have known and worked with many of Locke Liddell’s outstanding attorneys, and now am thrilled to be a part of their team,” Judge Duncan said. “Though I will be based in Austin, I will also be doing work in San Antonio and in other parts of the state. I look forward to combining my skills as an attorney with the insights I gained as a judge to help serve our clients.

Weltman, Weinberg & Reis Co., L.P.A. Wins National Legal Marketing Association’s Your Honor Award
Weltman, Weinberg & Reis Co., L.P.A. (WWR) is pleased to announce that it was the recipient of a second place award in the Legal Marketing Association’s Annual Your Honor Awards program (Promotional and Collateral Materials/Newsletter or Alert category). The firm was presented with the award at the 2007 Legal Marketing Association (LMA) conference in Atlanta, GA. WWR received the award in recognition of The WWR Letter newsletter- a quarterly newsletter distributed by WWR to clients in the credit union industry.

The Your Honor Awards recognize creativity, execution, achievement and overall excellence in legal marketing. There were 231 total entries to the award program and The WWR Letter won for a submission in the Promotional and Collateral Materials/Newsletter or Alert category.

The WWR Letter debuted as The Weltman Weinberg Letter in Spring 1994, with the goal of communicating relevant and timely legal information to WWR’s credit union clients. Robert Rutkowski, Managing Partner of the firm’s Credit Union department, states, “WWR has been involved with the credit union industry for over 30 years. Serving and supporting the collection and legal needs of credit unions has always been an important part of our business. We have great respect for the credit union movement and strive to stay on top of issues affecting the credit union industry. The WWR Letter is published quarterly and features articles on new legislation, advances in technology and news about the firm. In the past year, we’ve adopted new technology to enhance the tools we offer to the credit union industry, co-hosting a monthly podcast called Current Issues in Credit Unions (www.ciicu.com) with three other credit union attorneys from Farleigh Witt, Messick & Weber P.C. and the American Airlines Credit Union. We also created a blog titled That Credit Union Blog (www.thatcreditunionblog.com) to quickly disseminate information and opinions about credit unions and the credit union movement. The credit union movement is ever-changing, offering new services to their members everyday, and we felt it was important to revamp the newsletter to reflect the rapidly changing nature of the credit union industry.”

Mala Mason, Marketing Communications Coordinator, says, “We set out to create a fresh new look for the newsletter that would reflect the community-based nature of the credit union movement while featuring content that would better cater to this continuously evolving industry. We wanted to showcase our own adaptation of new technology and create a newsletter that was fun to read. Working with our design partner, Sandra Wolk-Graubard of Spiral Studio, and printer Oliver Printing, we are able to produce an exciting and creative newsletter each quarter.”

The LMA is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs and maintaining the professional standards of the men and women involved in marketing within the legal profession. One of the principal goals of the LMA is to provide to its members vital and timely information on a wide variety of legal marketing issues so that they may grow professionally as well as personally.
