HOWREY ADDS ANTITRUST PARTNER IN SAN FRANCISCO
"Howrey LLP has announced that David Stewart has joined the firm’s San Francisco office as a partner. Mr. Stewart is an experienced antitrust and intellectual property litigator and a driving force behind the application of antitrust laws to high technology industries in the US, Europe and Asia. Until recently, he was Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at RealNetworks, Inc. and is well versed in global antitrust practice, having represented clients in matters before the Department of Justice, the European Commission and the Korean Fair Trade Commission.

In making the announcement, Robert F. Ruyak, Chairman and CEO of Howrey, said, “We are pleased to be adding Dave Stewart, an experienced antitrust lawyer, to our Northern California offices. He will add depth and a unique solid business perspective to our antitrust team.”

In addition to his service at RealNetworks, Dave previously served as General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of a venture-backed technology start up and, prior to that, as a partner with Sidley & Austin. He graduated from Harvard College and received a M.Sc from the University of Edinburgh and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was Note and Comment Editor of the California Law Review and is a past president of the Boalt Hall Alumni Association.

Howrey has built a strong team of litigators throughout California in its three specialty practice areas - intellectual property, global litigation and antitrust. Henry Bunsow, Managing Partner for Northern California, added, “Dave is a terrific addition to our West Coast team. His antitrust expertise will be an excellent complement to the work we do for our clients. We welcome him as we continue to grow.”

Howrey opened in Silicon Valley in 1996 and is currently located in East Palo Alto. The San Francisco office opened in 2002. The firm’s Northern California offices have grown to more than 80 lawyers."

Touitou Quoted in "The Wall Street Journal"
Philip Touitou was quoted in the article, "Claims of Legal Malpractice Become Thorn for Law Firms," which appeared in the April 11, 2007 issue of The Wall Street Journal. The article discusses the trend of large law firms frequently being the focus of legal malpractice claims, illustrating the point with recent cases against Dorsey & Whitney LLP and against Irell & Manella LLP. Touitou explains in the piece that the increasing size and revenues of many law firms has made them targets of these types of cases, defense of which is itself becoming its own business.

ABA Honors Barkley Clark with “Award for Distinguished Service”
Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP attorney Barkley Clark recently received the “Award for Distinguished Service” by the Uniform Commercial Code Committee of the American Bar Association. The award, presented to Clark at the ABA’s spring meeting, is given to an individual who has demonstrated “exceptional service” in the area of commercial law and the Uniform Commercial Code, as a teacher, scholar and practitioner.

This award is not given every year. In fact, Clark is only the second recipient of this honor. The first was Professor Fred Miller, who served for many years as the Executive Director of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws.

When presenting the award to Clark, the ABA recognized his practice in the commercial law area, his scholarship in the form of treatises and newsletters, his teaching at various law schools, and his contribution to the development and redrafting of the Uniform Commercial code and the Uniform Consumer Credit Code.

“We are honored to work with an attorney of Barkley’s stature and talents as he brings an unparalleled expertise to our clients,” Mark Foster, Stinson Morrison Hecker managing partner said. “We congratulate Barkley on receiving this recognition.”

Clark, a partner in the Financial Services Division, focuses his practice on banking and commercial law, often serving as an expert witness on the Uniform Commercial Code. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and has written eight books and 30 law review articles on commercial law and banking subjects. His treatises are frequently cited by federal and state courts around the county. Clark has spent over 20 years as a law professor at the University of Kansas, Georgetown Law Center, George Washington University National Law Center and University of Virginia. Clark received his bachelor’s degree from Amherst College and his law degree from Harvard.

Sheppard Mullin Re-elects Chairman Guy Halgren
Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP is pleased to announce that the firm's chairman of the executive committee, Guy N. Halgren, has been re-elected to a third consecutive term leading the firm. Halgren was first elected to this management role in 2001.

"Our partnership is pleased not only that Guy has been instrumental in growing the firm in terms of numbers, but he has also expanded our core competencies while preserving Sheppard Mullin's tradition as a great place to work," said Joe Coyne, chair of the firm's growth committee and member of the executive committee. "We expect Guy to continue this approach in his next term."

Sheppard Mullin has experienced significant growth in the past six years. The number of attorneys is approaching 500, which is more than 40% greater than the firm's attorney headcount in 2001. During the same time period the firm has geographically grown from a California firm, to a national firm with locations in New York and Washington, D.C., to an international firm this year with an office in Shanghai.

Comparing 2001 to 2006, gross revenue has climbed from $149 million to $305 million. Practice area growth has occurred in a number of ways, including the establishment of an institutional entertainment and media practice in 2003, the significant growth of the firm's Intellectual Property practice group in recent years and the strengthening of signature practices: Antitrust, Corporate, Finance & Bankruptcy, Government Contracts, Labor & Employment, Litigation and Labor & Employment.

Additionally, Sheppard Mullin's administrative partner and Business Trial practice group leader, Robert Beall, has been elected to the firm's executive committee for a three-year term. Partner Joan Story has been reelected to the executive committee for a three-year term. Beall is based in the firm's Orange County office. Story, a Real Estate partner, is based in the San Francisco office.
