Two Accomplished IP Attorneys Join Barnes & Thornburg LLP's Washington, D.C., Office
Jeffrey D. Karceski, former local section leader for patent prosecution at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP (Pillsbury), has moved to Barnes & Thornburg LLP, where he will help strengthen the firm’s considerable patent practice and diversify the firm’s client base with his significant international representation.

Karceski, an IP counselor with experience in patent prosecution, opinion drafting and litigation, joined Barnes & Thornburg’s Washington, D.C., office as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Department after spending eight years with Pillsbury representing domestic and international clients in patent prosecution and counseling.

Former Pillsbury Counsel Christine Hoeft McCarthy is also joining Karceski at Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Washington, D.C., office. She is of counsel in the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. While at Pillsbury, McCarthy built a broad-based intellectual property practice and facilitated junior attorney training directed toward improving efficiency for clients.

“I’m looking forward to working with my clients to provide superior service from a cost effective platform,” Karceski said. “That’s been my business model all along. Barnes & Thornburg provides significant capabilities for taking this business model to the next level.”

“We believe that Jeff’s practice philosophy and his perspective on client service is a true fit with Barnes & Thornburg,” said Perry Palan, head of the firm’s intellectual property practice in Washington, D.C. “Barnes and Thornburg will benefit from his legal experience and case management abilities.”

Karceski concentrates his practice on patent prosecution, counseling and opinion work. He advises clients on virtually every aspect of patent law, including patent drafting, prosecution before the U.S. and foreign patent offices, validity studies, infringement studies, product clearances, patent clearances and others. Karceski received his undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1988, with a minor in mechanical engineering. He earned his law degree from the George Washington University Law Center in 1991. Karceski is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Outside of his practice, Karceski is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he has been teaching a paralegal studies course in intellectual property as a part of the Paralegal Studies Program since 1994.

McCarthy’s practice covers a spectrum of intellectual property matters, including patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, Internet law, copyright and patent licensing, and export control review. McCarthy received her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University in 1993, with a focus on the science option and with minors in environmental engineering and physics. She earned her law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1996 and received her intellectual property and licensing advanced certificates from Franklin Pierce Law Center.
