Barnes & Thornburg LLP Named ‘Top 100 Law Firm For Diversity’
A national diversity publication has ranked Barnes & Thornburg LLP in the top 100 law firms for its diversity.

Multicultural Law magazine listed the firm in its annual "Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity" ranking in its 2007 edition. Magazine publishers selected the top 100 from more than 200 law firms surveyed.

"We are gratified to learn that the firm has been recognized for its efforts to enhance diversity," said Anthony Prather, co-chair of the firm's Diversity Committee. "We take seriously our commitment to assemble a workforce of people who come from different cultures and backgrounds, and we continue to look for ways to build on what we already have accomplished."

The firm's diversity program started in earnest more than three decades ago when Barnes & Thornburg first promoted a woman to partner. Women and minority attorneys participate at all levels of the organization, including in leadership positions and on operating committees.

A firmwide committee of attorneys helps shape Barnes & Thornburg's diversity program, which consists of several key components, including recruitment and retention, professional and skills development, sponsorship of diversity-focused events and diversity training.

Chance Encounter Leads English Teacher To Legal Career at Baker Donelson
Angie C. Davis is one of five attorneys who earlier this year were named shareholders in the Memphis office of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC. She joined John B. Burns, Mark A.B. Carlson, Leigh M. Chiles and Clinton J. Simpson in the distinction.

Davis is one attorney who did not dream of practicing law when she was growing up. She originally started her career as an English teacher. It was through a twist of fate that she was able to parlay her teaching skills into a successful legal career.

Originally from South Carolina, Davis attended the University of Texas at Austin where she graduated in 1992 with a degree in English and then, after a chance meeting with an attorney, decided to go to law school a few years later. She graduated in 1999 from the South Texas College of Law in Houston.

Davis focuses her practice in the area of employment litigation and frequently speaks on the topic of labor and employment law.

Baker Donelson Announces New Addition to Stellar Health Policy Team
Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC is pleased to announce that Susan M. Christensen has joined the Firm's Federal Public Policy Group. Ms. Christensen will serve as senior public policy advisor on the Firm's health public policy team.

The addition of Ms. Christensen marks the third major hire by Baker Donelson's health public policy group in recent months. Lance Leggitt, formerly a member of the President's Domestic Policy Council and the White House's principal health policy advisor, joined the Firm as shareholder and chair of the federal health policy group in September of 2006. Earlier this year, Baker Donelson announced the addition of former Congresswoman Nancy Johnson, who was a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee and chair of the Health Subcommittee. Ms. Johnson will be joining the Firm in early May after completing service as a fellow for the Institute of Politics associated with Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

"Susan has extensive experience in a wide range of health care issues," said Mr. Leggitt. "Through her focused health care work in both the public and private sectors, she has acquired a depth of knowledge that greatly enhances the strength of our federal health policy group."

From 2000 to 2004, Ms. Christensen served as Congresswoman Johnson's Senior Health Policy Counsel, providing counsel and advice on public and private health care reforms, including Medicare, Medicaid, health information technology, liability reform, private market health insurance reform, the uninsured, long-term care insurance and mental health parity. Prior to joining Baker Donelson, she most recently served as senior advisor for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where she was responsible for managing key policy issues related to AHRQ's overall health IT portfolio. Ms. Christensen's experience also includes working as a health policy consultant and as Public Services Director at BearingPoint, Inc., a leading developer of health information system infrastructure strategy and solutions. As a member of the Firm's Federal Public Policy Group, Ms. Christensen will work closely with Mr. Leggitt and Ms. Johnson on health public policy matters.

"Health care continues to be a major concern in this country," said Linda Daschle, chair of the Firm's Federal Public Policy Group. "With the addition of Lance, Nancy and now Susan, Baker Donelson is demonstrating its commitment to developing a stellar health policy team that has the know-how and ability to play an active role in the ongoing national debate related to health care issues."

Baker Donelson's Federal Public Policy Group was founded in October 1988 by Senator Howard H. Baker, whose distinguished career includes service as Senate Majority Leader, Chief of Staff to the President of the United States and Ambassador to Japan. The Firm's government relations/public policy practice strives to embody the bi-partisanship and integrity that Senator Baker brought to his work both in Congress and as Chief of Staff to President Reagan. Baker Donelson's Federal Public Policy Group and Health Law Group are nationally recognized, with both having been ranked among the top 10 in the country by leading industry publications.
