Denton Presents at Eighth Annual Environmental Issues Forum
Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett LLP attorney Charlie Denton will moderate and speak at the Michigan Chamber of Commerce's eight annual Environmental Issues Forum on May 9 at the Michigan Chamber of Commerce in Lansing, Michigan. The director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Steve Chester, is among the notable speakers.

Denton again coordinated this Annual Forum for the Chamber, and also will participate in a panel presentation on the overhaul of Part 201 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, which regulates most sites of environmental contamination in Michigan. Denton, chair of Varnum’s Environmental Litigation Group, specializes in environmental law, litigation, administrative enforcement, compliance counseling, insurance coverage and alternative dispute resolution.

Denton's professional affiliations reflect his depth of environmental law knowledge. In addition to being a member of the Environmental Law section of the State Bar of Michigan, he is a member of the Environmental Litigation and Superfund & Hazardous Waste sections of the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Information Network for Superfund Settlements, the Michigan Chemistry Council, the Environmental Quality Committee of the Michigan Manufactures Association, and the Air and Waste Management Association.

Townsend Recognized as Leading Trademark Filer in San Francisco by NameProtect's Trademark Insider®
For the fifth consecutive year, Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP, a 180-attorney law firm specializing in intellectual property, is the recipient of the 2007 Trademark Insider Award for the #1 San Francisco Trademark Filer Law Firm.

These annual awards are granted by NameProtect to leading trademark attorneys and law firms on a national basis, as recognized in NameProtect’s latest edition of its quarterly NameProtect Trademark Insider Report. The report provides the general business and legal community with insight into overall trademark filing activity, a ranking of leading trademark law firms and companies, and an analysis of overall industry trends. Awards are determined by the total number of new trademark applications filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office during calendar year 2006.

"We are very pleased to be recognized for the fifth consecutive year for the continued excellence of our trademark group," said partner Mark Steiner, leader of Townsend’s Trademark and Copyright Practice Group. "While the filing of trademark applications is a good measure of the size of our practice - I am equally enthused about the variety of work we are doing with regard to enforcement and other trademark portfolio counseling issues and expect our practice to continue to grow in all areas."

Townsend teams with businesses, inventors, entrepreneurs, scientists and investors to protect their innovative products and ideas. With offices in San Francisco, Palo Alto, Walnut Creek, San Diego, Denver, Seattle and Tokyo, Townsend has more than 180 attorneys, many with advanced technical degrees and extensive scientific and business experience.

JOEL R. BURCAT CHOSEN FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Joel R. Burcat, a Partner and Chair of Saul Ewing LLP’s Environmental Department, has been selected the co-recipient of the 2007 Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA), Environmental, Mineral and Natural Resources Law Section's Distinguished Service Award. The Award is given annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the development, improvement or furtherance of the profession of environmental law or outstanding contribution to the PBA's Section on Environmental, Mineral and Natural Resources Law.

In 1998, under Mr. Burcat's guidance and direction, a committee of the Section implemented Apr-07 pilot pro bono program to provide legal services to financially underprivileged individuals in Environmental Hearing Board (EHB) appeals. The pilot program has been a great success and is expanding to include cases beyond the EHB. Andrew S. Levine, a Partner with Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young of Philadelphia, was the co-recipient of the award as a result of his efforts to institute, manage and promote the Section's fledgling environmental law pro bono program.

Joel’s commitment and professional accomplishments in the field of environmental law are well-known within the Saul Ewing family,? said David S. Antzis, Managing Partner of Saul Ewing. It is gratifying to see his work being recognized by the PBA and the larger legal community. Not only did he envision this pro bono program, he worked hard to get it up and running. These are qualities that make Joel a great lawyer and colleague.

This is the highest award bestowed by the PBA Environmental Law Section. Mr. Burcat was presented with the award on April 11, 2007 at this year's Environmental Law Dinner at the Harrisburg Hilton & Towers in Harrisburg, PA.

Mr. Burcat received his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and earned his J.D. from Vermont Law School.

Michael Steele to Join LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae: Maryland’s former Lieutenant Governor to further strengthen the firm's Washington, DC presence`
LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae LLP is pleased to announce that Michael Steele, the former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, will join the firm as a partner. Based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office, he will focus on corporate securities, government relations and international affairs with an emphasis on Africa.

As the issuance of Congressional subpoenas continues to surge, Michael will also play a lead role in providing counsel to elected officials and executives brought before Congress.

"Michael's leadership ability and broad experience make him uniquely qualified to provide an exceptional level of strategic counsel to our clients," said LeBoeuf Lamb Chairman Steven H. Davis. "We are pleased and proud to have him join us."

Ralph C. Ferrara, managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office said, "We have made great strides over the past few years in building a formidable team here in Washington. Having someone of Michael's stature and accomplishments will enhance both our Washington practice and our firm's goal of providing clients with the best available resources."

Commenting on his move, Michael Steele said "LeBoeuf Lamb is one of the world's premier law firms. I look forward to practicing in an environment that will enable me to contribute what I have learned through both my public and legal career."

Lieutenant Governor Steele rose to prominence in 2003 as the first African-American ever elected to statewide office in Maryland, and in 2006 was the state's Republican nominee for United States Senate. Most recently, he was named Chairman of GOPAC, the premiere education and training center for Republican candidates for public office.

As Lieutenant Governor, Steele has a prodigious list of accomplishments: He led the fight to improve access to better-performing schools; worked alongside law enforcement officials to reduce crime and secure local communities; strengthened the state's minority business program to foster greater entrepreneurship; and worked with Maryland conservationists to protect the environment for future generations. Steele was also deeply engaged in the state's business and economic development activities, forging key international relationships to expand Maryland's global economic interests.

In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Mr. Steele to serve a term on the Board of Visitors of the United States Naval Academy. Other affiliations include the State House Trust, the East Baltimore Development Corporation, the Export-Import Bank Advisory Committee, The Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees and the Prince George's County Chapter of the NAACP.

Prior to his career in public service, Steele worked for the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen, and Hamilton where he specialized in corporate and financial law.

Steele received a bachelor's degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University in 1981 and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1991. He also served as a seminarian in the Order of St. Augustine at Villanova University.

Among the distinguished awards and honors received by Lt. Governor Steele, he has been named a 2005 Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership and was awarded a Bethune-DuBois Institute 2005 Award for his work in the ongoing development of quality education in Maryland.
