Demystifying Customs and Immigration Enforcement of the Department of Homeland Security
The creation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2002 was a result of one of the largest government reorganizations in 50 years. To help employers understand the Department’s various roles and its significance to businesses, the law firm of Miller Canfield presents “Demystifying Customs and Immigration Enforcement Efforts of the Department of Homeland Security,” featuring guest speaker Brian M. Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The International Business Briefing will be held on Thursday, April 26, from 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the Automation Alley International Business Center (2675 Bellingham, Troy, Mich.).

Special Agent in Charge Moskowitz will discuss customs enforcement, immigration and worksite enforcement, money laundering and fraud, exporting and ITAR, and will be open for questions. Moskowitz covers Michigan and Ohio for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the largest investigative arm of the DHS, responsible for identifying and dismantling vulnerabilities regarding the nation’s border, economic, transportation and infrastructure security. ICE Special Agents arguably possess the broadest investigative authority within the United States Government.

Loeb & Loeb Continues to Bolster Intellectual Property Practice
Loeb & Loeb LLP announced today that Mark Waddell, a patent litigator, has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in the Litigation Department. He joins from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP and is the newest in a series of recent lateral partners to join the firm in the Patent Litigation Group.

With over 20 years of experience in patent disputes, including many in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, Waddell has been involved in patent cases for high profile pharmaceuticals including Prozac, Paxil, and the breast cancer drug Nolvadex. Although he has focused his practice particularly on Hatch-Waxman issues, Waddell has advised clients on topics such as patent interference practice and ITC proceedings. Complimentary to his work as a litigator, Waddell worked closely with pharmaceutical lobbyists on the passage of process patent amendments in 1988.

“We are extremely pleased to have Mark join our Patent Litigation practice,” said Michael Beck, Loeb & Loeb Co-Chair in New York. “His extensive work with pharmaceuticals companies, particularly focusing on Hatch-Waxman issues, will be a strong asset to our rapidly growing practice.”

“In addition to counseling clients on a wide range of patent issues, Mark provides an in depth perspective of the pharmaceutical industry,” said Los Angeles based Co-Chair John Frankenheimer. “With his broad experience and first hand knowledge of most of the technologies in this industry, Mark will undoubtedly provide a high level of insight to our clients.”

Waddell’s hiring is the latest in a series of lateral partners to join Loeb & Loeb’s Intellectual Patent Litigation group in 2007. In February, a patent litigation team of three partners, Jordan Sigale, Edward Rice and Marina Saito, joined Loeb & Loeb’s Chicago office, and last week Laura Wytsma joined the firm’s Los Angeles office.

“I’m very pleased and enthusiastic to be working with my former colleagues,” said Waddell. “Loeb & Loeb has a strong reputation for providing it’s clients with a high level of service and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to grow the patent litigation practice.”

Prior to Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, Waddell was a partner at Chadbourne & Parke. He earned his J.D. at Seton Hall University Law School (1984) and his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (1979).
