Womble Carlyle Nominated For National Employer Support Of The Guard And Reserve Award
Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC., has been nominated for the 2007 Freedom Award – a national honor given by the U.S. Secretary of Defense office in recognition of an employer's outstanding commitment to the National Guard and Reserve.

Womble Carlyle has been selected to represent North Carolina in the Large Employer category. The firm was selected from 30 entrants across the state by the North Carolina Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Attorney Chris Geis, a Navy reservist who recently returned from a tour of duty in the Middle East, nominated the firm for the Freedom Award.

"Your nomination for this award illustrates the exceptional leadership, support and personal devotion you provide to your employees," said Bud Brown, State ESGR Chairman.

While the Freedom Award is the ESGR's highest honor, the firm has won numerous other ESGR awards for its ongoing support of citizen-soldiers.

On January 27, the firm received the Above and Beyond Award, which is awarded by the North Carolina Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The firm felt so honored by this award that more than a dozen attorneys and staff members, including Managing Member Keith Vaughan, attended the awards ceremony in Greensboro, N.C. The firm also has been awarded the ESGR Patriotic Employer Certificate and the ESGR Patriot Award within the past two years.

The firm's Military Leave Policy received the Five Star Statement of Support Award from the U.S. Department of Defense in 2005. A signing ceremony was held in Raleigh. Womble Carlyle’s Military Leave Policy calls for the firm to make up the difference between the employee’s average monthly pay and the base monthly salary they receive in the military if they are called to active duty and allows employees to keep their health care, dental and insurance benefits while in the military.

In addition, Womble Carlyle and its employees have supported the men and women of the military in numerous other ways, ranging from writing letters to sending care packages to donating blood.

Winners of the 2007 Freedom Award are scheduled to be announced in July.

Volunteer Lawyers for Justice Names White & Case Pro Bono Law Firm of the Month
Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) recognized the pro bono work of White & Case lawyers this week by naming the Firm VLJ's April 2007 pro bono law firm of the month.

VLJ provides legal services to underprivileged persons solely through the efforts of volunteer lawyers. White & Case lawyers worked on one of the group's initiatives — the Special Education Law Project, which provides legal services to indigent children with disabilities when they are denied appropriate special education services. So far, White & Case lawyers have successfully handled two such cases.

"We are grateful for the recognition VLJ has given us," said pro bono director Jim Stillwaggon. "Not only do these victories make a tremendous impact on the lives of these teenagers — a cause to which we are dedicated — but through such programs, our associates gain experience in negotiations with an adverse party as the senior attorney present, which is something that will help them in client negotiations as well."

The Firm's lawyers helped an emotionally disturbed high school senior, whose educational future was at stake when the school district decided to stop paying for her to attend the alternative school that specialized in dealing with students with similar issues. New York-based associate John Rue took the lead on the girl's case with less than a week before the hearing.

After a full day of negotiations at the courthouse, actively mediated by the Administrative Law Judge, the school board settled, and the girl was able to return to school for the remainder of the year, where she received the specialized counseling that she requires. Assisting John Rue on this case were associates Hunter Murdock, Heather Burke, Megan DePasquale, Melissa Laferriere and legal assistant Kelly Bonner. Partners Rob Milne and Jack Pace supervised.

In another case, New York-based associate Hunter Murdock represented a teenager with learning disabilities who, after moving to a different location, was taken out of a special needs school and put into a general education high school. Murdock, who was supervised by Pace and worked together with legal assistant Patricia Stahl, reached a settlement which allowed the teenager to stay at the school for children with special needs.

About Volunteer Lawyers for Justice
VLJ was founded in 2001 by a group of attorneys in New Jersey concerned about the limited availability of free legal resources to the poor. VLJ is a comprehensive pro bono program meeting the needs of the poor solely through the efforts of volunteer attorneys throughout New Jersey. To date, VLJ volunteers have assisted thousands of indigent persons in the community with critical legal matters such as divorce, domestic violence, special education issues, bankruptcy, evictions and more.

White & Case Lawyer Receives Jessup Award
White & Case associate Irina Sergeeva was awarded the Pamela M. Young Friends of the Jessup Award for her role as National Administrator of the Jessup Competition in Russia. The award was given at the World Championship for the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition held in Washington, DC.

"White & Case has worked closely with the International Law Student Association (ILSA) since the first Jessup competition was held in Russia six years ago," said Hugh Verrier, executive partner of the Moscow office and member of the Firm's global management board. "Irina's support has helped foster the Russian national competition's presence and growth."

Administered by ILSA in more than 90 countries, the Jessup Competition is the world's largest moot court competition. Every year, over 2,000 law students from more than 500 schools around the world participate in the competition. This year, 43 teams competed in the Russian national rounds, which White & Case has sponsored and administered since 2002. In this time, the Russian round has grown to be world's second-largest national Jessup competition.

As Global Partner of the Jessup Competition, White & Case also sponsored the Chinese and Canadian competitions this year. Through White & Case's global partnership, teams from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, Guyana, Nepal and Lesotho all received funding to travel and compete in the world championship event, the latter three teams competing for the first time. In past years, White & Case's Prague, Istanbul, Beijing and Hong Kong offices have also supported the Jessup competition.
