Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers Attorneys Named 2007 Rising Stars
Five attorneys from Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C. are recognized as 2007 "Rising Stars" by Boston Magazine's Super Lawyers. Associates John D. Finnegan, Perry Ganz, Karen L. McKenna, Melissa A. Potvin and Jennifer C. Roman were chosen by their peers to receive this notable recognition. This is the third consecutive year that John Finnegan has been selected.

This annual award recognizes the top young attorneys practicing in the state of Massachusetts. Award recipients were selected after Law & Politics Media mailed ballots to the most recent group named to the Super Lawyers list asking them to vote for those young lawyers who represent the best of the legal profession.

Award candidates had to be either 40-years or under, or have been practicing law for 10 years or less. During the selection process, nominees underwent an extensive independent background check and a blue ribbon panel review process.

Annexation by Durant Challenged
Oklahoma Farm Bureau and landowners in rural Bryan County have filed a lawsuit against the city of Durant protesting the annexation of land between Durant and Calera. At issue are 20-foot wide strips of land encircling vast acreages of unincorporated territory previously outside the Durant municipal limits.

The plaintiffs, which are represented by McAfee & Taft attorneys Jeff Todd and Amy White, claim the annexation of private property in 2005 did not meet legal requirements and, therefore, the ordinance should be declared invalid.

Oklahoma law requires that annexed land must be adjacent or contiguous with existing municipal limits. It also requires a municipality to prepare a plan for extending services to the proposed annexation. The plaintiffs contend no such plan for services exists.

Gibbons and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Minorities in the Profession Section Host Pathways to Partnership Program for Associates of Color
More than 35 attorneys representing over 20 law firms in the tri-state area attended a riveting diversity program, Pathways to Partnership for Associates of Color, hosted by Gibbons and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Minorities in the Profession Section (MIPS). A distinguished panel of accomplished partners of color which included Paulette Brown of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, Peter Harvey of Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler, Sofia Lipman of McCarter & English, Daniel Mateo of Reed Smith, and Ghillaine Reid of Gibbons, joined together to educate and provide guidance and key strategies to chart a successful course toward law firm partnership. Moderated by Rita K. Warfield, an Associate in the Gibbons Product Liability Department, the interactive program also addressed hot diversity topics and issues in the legal industry including the challenges and expectations minority attorneys will face as they walk the road to partnership, as well as the responsibilities law firms should take to recruit and retain top minority talent.

"We are proud we had the opportunity to join with the New Jersey State Bar Association's Minorities in the Profession Section on this program. Pathways to Partnership is just one example of our commitment to diversity, which has earned us ranking among the top 100 firms in the nation for diversity by Multi-Cultural Law magazine," said Patrick C. Dunican, Jr., Managing Director of the firm.

Drawing from the recent barrage of news coverage on the state of diversity in the legal industry, each panelist was given an opportunity to discuss some of the key issues facing attorneys of color at law firms. Each speaker candidly shared with guests their experience, knowledge and insight on how associates of color should navigate through the rough waters of partnership.

Paulette Brown, a Partner with Edwards Angell's Labor & Employment Group, shared the importance of developing "organic" mentoring relationships. "Mentoring relationships should not be forced, but should be natural alliances you develop with the individual." She mentioned the importance of searching for mentors inside and outside of firms as well as acquiring more than one mentor. "You should have a minimum of two mentors. Having diverse mentoring relationships will give you many different perspectives and help you navigate through the challenges at your firm."

Ghillaine Reid, a Director in the Gibbons Business & Litigation Department, discussed the importance of utilizing internal firm initiatives to demonstrate a commitment to the firm. In addition to participating in firm initiatives and activities, she stressed the importance of going above and beyond the call of duty as an attorney. "Most people who want to be partners begin to function as a partner. Your mindset should be to service your clients, produce great work and showcase your dedication to the firm."

Daniel Mateo, who focuses his practice on both complex commercial litigation matters and product liability defense at Reed Smith, offered his perspective on raising your profile in a law firm setting. "There is no substitute for great work. It is the best way to raise your profile internally." He also recommended not only raising your profile internally, but going outside of the firm’s doors to expand your exposure. "Some great ways to increase your exposure is to offer yourself up for speaking and writing opportunities. You should also become active in bar associations. These opportunities give others an opportunity to become familiar with you."

Sofia Lipman, a Partner with McCarter & English’s Financial Services Litigation Group, offered branding tips to become a "Super Lawyer." She stressed the importance of producing quality work, taking the initiative to go after opportunities to expand your experience and make an effort to work well with everyone. "Most importantly, make sure you understand the published expectation of your firm such as performance and billable hours. Then make sure you meet those expectations."

Peter Harvey, former Attorney General of the State of New Jersey and a former federal prosecutor, tackled some of the challenges and realities associates of color face at law firms. "Some of you will encounter individuals who will not be interested in your development. Some of you will face individuals who will feel you have advantages they don’t have." Instead of focusing on the negative, Mr. Harvey urged attendees to give themselves permission to be successful. "Start by asking yourself - What makes you a valuable lawyer to your firm? What kind of work do you want to do? What is your dream of you?"

Moderator Rita Warfield, who is on the Board of Directors for MIPS, was responsible for coordinating the program. "I am proud that Gibbons had the vision to see how important a program such as Pathways is to minorities in the legal community. Based on the feedback from our guest panelists and attendees, we have made a contribution to help remedy this deficiency in the legal landscape of New Jersey."
