Chicago

Firm Culture:  Either hugely suck up to Waris or Ruff, or your career at Pretzel is a non-starter.
Work & Hours:  14 hour days are not uncommon, and yet associates still feel the need to pad their billing. Associates who don't routinely work weekends are suspect. Of course, if you work in the Waris group and are a favorite, you can leave at 5 p.m. every day without fail and somehow still get away with billing 14+ hours for the day.
Salary & Benefits:  Salary is at the lowest possible end of the spectrum. Bonuses are entirely a function of how many hours an associate goes over the yearly billing minimum. Absolutely nothing else matters other than time entered into the system - hence, the rampant bill padding by associates.
The Interview process:  Consists of random check-ins with employees who may or may not have any connection with your job post-interview.
Overall Impression:  Like a timewarp back to the 50's. Ancient technology, ancient unenlightened attitudes about race, gender and sexual orientation. Top heavy with partners, nearly all of whom are white and male, which is reason enough for most female associates not to stick around for more than a year or two. Almost zero opportunity for advancement. No training to speak of. In-house CLE's consist of round-table bragging sessions by the litigation team and product demonstrations by tech-vendors that the firm is too cheap to ever purchase. You get one chance - and one chance only - to get a task right. Fuck up and you will never be assigned that same task ever again. And beware HR. Employees are their No. 1 enemy.
