Dear Judged
Small FirmsDear Your Honor?
Why are some of the small firms ran by the very biggest assholes?

Dear wickedangel,
Dear Wicked Angel,
That is a fantastic question. A very good one actually and one I have
never personally heard before. But you are right--most of the smaller
firms are run by some of the biggest assholes. Here is why I think this is
true.
First, a lot of the smaller firms are run by people that cannot get along
with large groups of people. They may have even been kicked out of one of
these groups before. Therefore, their is a possibility they may be a
little pissed off.
Second, a lot of these smaller firms have to work harder to get clients,
have clients who are smaller and are less likely to pay and have a hard
time attracting people to work for them.
Third, without a name to stand behind that they are "the stuff" they have
to act like they are. The only way to act this was is to act like a total
asshole--they think this will prove something to people.
Fourth, there is a lot of pressure associated with running a small firm.
You need to make payroll ever couple of weeks, pay for office staff, deal
with small matters that you would not need to in a larger firm and this all
makes it more difficult to practice law and make money. In addition, to
attract other partners you have to offer them a lot of money--i.e., a
larger percentage of the profits. Since the profits are never as large as
the firm expects, people who run small firms are consistently looking for
ways to screw other partners and vice versa. No offense, but and associate
is incredibily vulnerable coming up against these sharks who have been
conditioned to act like this for often decades. That really sucks for
them.
Great question. Please write in again and do so often. I think you are
really on to something!
