Dear Judged
British LawIs it true that it's illegal in the UK to die in the Houses of
Parliament? Who came up with that?

Dear MommaLaw,
Believe it or
not, it is, in fact, true. What used to be the
world’s largest empire still has some astonishingly stupid laws on
the books, like the one you cite. Additionally inane,
pointless, and arbitrary British laws include the
following:
- It considered treason
to place a postage stamp bearing the image of a monarch upside down.
(Still not quite like outing a CIA operative, now is
it?)
- Women residing in Liverpool are legally barred from baring it all in
public by appearing topless. The one exception: if she works
as a clerk in a tropical fish store. Those damn koi
do have it easy!
- Waaaaay back in the 17th
century, Oliver Cromwell decreed that mince pies and Christmas pudding
ought to be banned on Christmas for fear of gluttony. Take
that, Obesity! (By the by, Cromwell was exhumed after he died and was
posthumously executed
- In Scotland, you must (yes, must) make
available your private home bathroom to anyone who knocks your door and
needs to, you know, go. Memo to Disney: I smell a musical . .
.
- The law won’t mean much to pregnant women who are legally able
to relieve themselves wherever they want—including a
policeman’s helmet. Those mommies-to-be are always
getting away with everything . . .
- A license is required if you want to
keep a lunatic in your house. I wonder who’s got the
papers for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.? Loons have been occupying
that house for seven years now.
- And let’s save
the best (or worst) for last: here in the US of A, it is illegal in Ohio to
get a fish drunk. So, no-go on that all-beer aquarium you
were planning.
